I thought the centre backs actually looked good. The transitions are a problem, nobody injected any pace other than Saka. Drop Foden and Trent imo.

Saka has been an injury worry recently, so in that sense he was going to go off instead of Foden. But in terms of actual play it didn’t make sense.

Personally I don’t understand why it can’t work. Foden, Bellingham and Kane all know how to roam/change positions and bring each other into the game - they all play a dynamic way for their clubs. But Shearer kept banging on about how Kane had to be static up front, it was clearly the game plan and that stopped others being able to interact with the play going forward. I know Haaland can play like that some times but it just doesn’t seem to suit Kane, who would get a lot from closer play with Son or Musiala and presumably could with a roaming Foden too.

I don’t think Southgate understands the fluidity of top teams these days. But you just have to look at an old England manager to see how outdated it is. Woy had quite a static game at Palace and they sucked. When he left, the players all started to interact with each other more, leading to more creativity and freedom and Palace looked so much better after he left. And Palace don’t have arguably the best front 4 in the world like England do.
