I'm more just trying to take our turn in the spotlight of the thread title while the iron is hot
I can see us slipping back at least a bit this season tbh, but maybe Maatsen and Onana could add some energy, and maybe Buendia and Tielemans might be able to do a bit more?
I don't think anyone really knows how much we've spent, it's all obfuscated in layers of FFP voodoo, all of our fans have become amateur accountants and want Daddy Nas to sue the Premier League over their bad unfair financial restrictions alongside Man City, who have always been our good friends and not cheats that we hate or whatever

There seems to be a strong consensus on the formatting. Trent and Gabriel are always first name. Jack is always first name only outside of a match and strictly Grealish during it, a pronunciation mullet. Emile Smith-Rowe never seems to go anywhere without all his names and seems a certainty to be knighted at some point
But I haven't worked out why Gabriel is pronounced differently than Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli. Everyone does this and I'm no exception, I can't help it

Eriksson was coming to the end of his tenure at Manchester City while on a post-season tour to Thailand.
“One morning when I was on a sun lounger by the pool, he walked towards me with a bottle of champagne and two glasses on it,” Hamann said.
“It was still only 10 in the morning. I looked up and said, ‘Boss, what are we celebrating?’ expecting him to make the triumphant announcement he was staying.
“He turned to me and smiled that gentle smile of his and took the air of a Buddhist philosopher, as he said, ‘Life, Kaiser. We are celebrating life’.”

I keep hoping Man United's values will shine through and they will not simply sack a manager after a year or three of poor results, but every time I am disappointed. What has happened up there? What values are now left at Manchester United Football Club Club?

Other than writing these totally original pieces of fiction that I now really want to get copies of:
In 1999, while manager of Huddersfield, he wrote a trio of novels: Striker!, Sweeper! and Defender!. The books centred on fictional football manager Steve Barnes, based on Bruce, who solved murder mysteries and thwarted terrorists. Bruce later expressed his embarrassment at the books, which have become sought-after collectables.

We won 7-0 in the last round of the same competition with the old manager and it was a second-string Leicester side last night
That said, we did play with a proper midfield in this game which made a bit of a difference. Still just as likely to concede a hatful against Chelsea on the weekend though

The stakes are higher given he actually is highly rated, but yes, if he fails it will be even funnier.
I was thinking this season is sort of a gimme but I'm not entirely sure - like there are almost too many games for that to be the case. Nobody will be demanding he gets into top four but it will be pretty clear if he's going to be any good by the end of the season.

Sorry for double post but like there has been a huge amount of revisionist nonsense about "Klopp was given time" in defence of ETH or whatever. The truth was Liverpool had visibility improved and completely changed tactics in Klopp's first ever match. They definitely had bumps in the road, plenty of them, but they also trounced City 4-1 fairly early on.
It was steady progression always under Klopp as it will be with most good managers nowadays.

its just one of a number of roles in modern footballing structure that gets to shrug and say "its their fault" and point to the director of football

that really was a pasting. some lovely goals and particularly enjoyed kyle walker giving himself a 4 yard start on werner and basically saying go on then knock it past me and try to outrun me then. followed by his impression of a milk float trying to avoid being overtaken by a ferrari.
City squad should be tithing 5 % of each of their individual wages to rodri for the remainder of his contract in the name of fairness.

Don't think this Liverpool squad is perfect but they have way way more firepower than anyone else in the league, and their rivals are weirdly one note in that regard. Long way to go but Slot's pragmatism looks a sensible strategy in that regard.

unless the lineup I'm seeing isn't posted in order of position, it looks like Lemina is back to midfield and not masquerading as a CB today?
feel like that's a necessity, when you have people playing CB that aren't used to it they get too damn far forward and get caught out, as he did right before the first PK last Saturday.

Grealish's long wait for a goalpublished at 19:19 Greenwich Mean Time19:19 GMT
Man City v Nottingham Forest (19:30 GMT)
Simon StoneBBC Sport's chief football news reporter at the Etihad Stadium
It barely seems credible Jack Grealish could go a full calendar year without scoring a goal.
But the £100m man is getting perilously close.
In 2024 this seems quite profoundly, ineluctably credible
Now if you told me he'd gone a year without jockeying alongside a defender as if preparing to glide past them but then checked back and made a sideways pass, I'd be like "ah yes then he is dead or retired now"

it's really funny but also amazing in that it's not just that s its hard to picture them doing their usual winning 12 games on the bounce thing, its getting hard to picture them functioning as a football team. has it got to the stage where they're hoping to be found guilty of the 115 yet?

i think as a club theyve started to accept that theyre going to be done and given that their entire approach is to adhere to a maniacs very soecific ravings to undermine their individual talent in service to a collective effort and the maniac is starting to fall apart, we can hope for the rot to last until the charges land and guardiola exits to go and make another exciting project boring

watching grealish play football now is excruciating. i was never his biggest fan but the way pep has brainwashed him into repeatedly doing one specific action whilst making him abandon every other action he did while at villa is bizarre. i genuinely wonder what cole palmer would resemble as a player with 18 months of city first team play under pep.

Post-match postbag. “I’m seeing great similarities between the beginning of Amorim’s reign and Arteta’s at Arsenal. For Arteta, it was decidedly mediocre until he finally had enough with the likes of Aubameyang, booted out their best player and captain, and never looked back. For this to work, the Amorim axe has to swing” – Hugh Molloy

Not sure utd have even 5 good players. Psr won't let them throw even more money at it as most of the ones they want rid of have lost any value, some of them in the space of 6 months (zirkzee, de ligt). Watching them tonight and there's just nothing there. Cue 4-3 win at anfield with Anthony hat trick and Radford winner.probably. Also only just seen the leicester - city highlights and thought city looked worse than ever tbh despite the win.

Bruno is by far the best post-Fergie signing and he's still crap 50% of the time

Re: Amorim
He's obviously better than this and he's been landed with the worst Utd squad in modern history but I can't think there are many, if any, managers who have started this badly and gone on to any sort of success
― Number None, Monday, 30 December 2024 22:40 (one month ago) link
I think that's true. And even some subsequently shit managers get a bit of a bounce going at the start. Not sure this is the situation for 'this is my immutable philosophy', not least since the wider trend in the Prem seems to be shifting towards coaches who can show versatility, and away from ideologues.
― LocalGarda, Monday, 30 December 2024 22:45 (one month ago) link
You need to establish some sort of credibility and I don't know that anyone would think starting eriksen/casemiro as yr 2 cm's is remotely acceptable no matter how many injuries and suspensions a team has. P sure none of the players thought that would work.

Can't think of anyone that would fit that description. At a push, I'd say Mata, Shaw (on the rare occasions he isn't injured), possibly Herrera...I'd also argue for Fred, but I know I'm in a minority of one there. As NN says, Fernandes is easily the best, but is also at fault for a lot of moves breaking down. Thinking back there are so many signings who came and went without leaving any impression in my memory. Schweinsteiger? Schneiderlin? Depay? Van de Beek? I'd forgotton Mikhitaryan ever existed.

also all the talk so far has been about his preferred formation, but not how the team actually plays tactically. a formation is not a style or tactical identity, it's just part of one. maybe that's a media thing and he's doing more in the background but it doesn't look great.
― LocalGarda, Monday, 30 December 2024 23:15 (one month ago) link
hard not to think this guy is toast
Did he get his team selection wrong?
“That is really easy when the game started and then finished for people making evaluations … I have to do it before … I’m the only guy who has to do it before … to try to understand the opponent and the way we play … Joshua Zirkzee is a player of Manchester United … we want more power sometimes in front … we are suffering always the first goal in set pieces … so today we had more guys for set pieces … so we are trying to cope with every problem in the team … sometimes we have a lot of problems … sometimes you push one side and the other is open … we are really clear that today Newcastle was a better team … you have to think about the team and also the player, because sometimes the player is suffering … I was there a few years ago … I felt the team was suffering and needed another midfielder … I talked to Josh about that … Josh is a really good guy … when he went to the tunnel, he was in a bad way because he’s a really good lad … Harry Maguire has had some tough moments … we will support Josh … Newcastle was not better than Josh, was better than Manchester United.”
Will he change his ideas?
“Maybe … or you continue with your idea, and you have to change the coach … it’s a choice that everybody makes in football … if I feel it’s the best thing for the team, to pass my message, I will go forward easily … you cannot go back … we have to continue to push … we have had four trainings all together … I was here because of my idea, and I will continue to do my idea until the end … we have to fight … it is a difficult moment … we have to address it with honesty … I change something tactical in every game … you focus on the three defenders, you can focus on that … I change every game and you can see it … if I didn’t believe, I would change, because I am not stubborn … if I believe in something I will stick on that.”

liverpool were sloppy in general tho and missed szoboszlai's energy in midfield i felt. trent was terrible, i am sick of his arrogance and lack of concentration. he has gotten unfair flak in the past but his preening and touting for a move all year has left a bad taste, and he was dire today.

I recall a piece by someone in response to the 'why did Suarez bite someone?!' furore, saying, broadly, that the answer is *right there*, ie, look at his teeth and the shit he's had for them all his life. I get the feeling it's not a mystery with Rashford. We imagine he's got it all, but playing in that atmosphere, surrounded by intense scrutiny (professional and personal) must be exhausting. His miracle 30-goal season came after time away with England (if I remember that right) - where he seemed to find some distance from all the bullshit he had to put up with.

Frankly salivating at the idea of Youngy doing a dark arts masterclass kicking fuck out of his son and/or getting a second yellow for hauling him down after getting catastrophically done for pace in the 40th minute
(if his son plays in the middle or something don't tell me)

Pretty worried we are running out of steam, a lot of late goals conceded. I'd have thought Slot's more controlled style and calming gigantic bald head would have eased the sort of late season fade we saw last year but there are signs of fatigue for sure. And the next few games is a horrible combo of fixtures.
My backbone of hope is "lads it's Arsenal".

bergvall will sontinue to show his neatness and his potential but he is physically not even attending the races in an observatory capacity, either pace or strength

Must be some truly shocking teams left in Europa if this commentator is correct and these 2 are the favourites for the competition
― oscar bravo, Sunday, 16 February 2025 16:56 (six days ago) link
Dead right. I honestly don't even want us in the final. Plymouth did us a favour too and that's not a revisionist take, quad talk ending before it begins is good, you flog the squad and end up with nothing.

that looks a pen to me from that corner, maguire clearly just hits the man
free out for a much softer challenge immediately

Yes thought so too. The lack of ability/desire to do the basics of football from both of these is quite startling.

Less than a minute and Andy Townsend has already called him Marcus Asensio. Kinda intrigued by the way the names of our two loanees are short circuiting these cretinsAlso if we’ve actually got Youri Tielemans marking big Virgil at set pieces all night we are so fucked, he is several heads higher

might not be a bad point but feel like i'm saying that too often now. defence isn't good enough in big games and darwin, good lord.

the world's stupidest footballer. I'm finally done with him now, that was the last straw
― or something, Wednesday, 19 February 2025 21:53 (three days ago) link
yep. i have tried and tried to forgive him and not be too hard on him as idk, there's something sort of sad about it. but we have been carrying him for too long.
it's a weird one as we are in a good position but the vibes feel bad now, we look knackered and don't control games anymore.
― LocalGarda, Wednesday, 19 February 2025 21:56 (three days ago) link
we haven't looked in control of a game since the Spurs 2nd leg, after which everyone was calling us the best team in the world. I try not to get too carried away in either direction but yeah, the vibes are not good all of a sudden. We've been here before of course. Sunday is huge

Yep, tho at the same time, and accepting it's sort of been the case a few times already, I feel it's a bit like that Gandalf bit about Gollum or whoever where he's like "he may yet have a role to play"
He'll never be consistent and he does damage but he still could lash in a crucial CL or Prem goal.

xp dont see the problem as being darwin not developing into a better finisher more that he is bringing a lot less to the team under slot than he did under klopp. i'd happily take that version of darwin this season. still think lfc will get to at least 86pts and arsenal wont.
