You gonna look fine
& primed for dancing
You're gonna trip and glide
All on the trembling plane
Your diamond hands
Will be stacked with roses
And wind and cars
And people of the past

I'll call you thing
Just when the moon sings
And place your face in stone
Upon every star
And gripped in the arms
Of the changeless madman
We'll dance our lives away
In the Ballrooms of Mars

You talk about day
I'm talking 'bout night time
When monsters call out
The names of men
Bob Dylan knows
And I bet Alan Freed did
There are things at night
That are better not to behold

You dance
With your lizard leather boots on
And pull the strings
That change the faces of men
You diamond browed hag
You're a gutter- gaunt gangster
John Lennon knows your name
And I've seen him
I've seen him

ROCK!!!

Right before the guitar solo in "Kings & Queens" by Killing Joke (one of only a small handful of songs with actual guitar solos in them by the band), there's an incredibly brief break wherein then-drummer Big Paul Ferguson grunts manfully, prompting Geordie to rip back into the proceedings with a carpet bombing of jagged, angular notes. Brilliantastic!

Michael Nesmith to Glen Campbell: "Play magic fingers!" In the middle of that same guitar solo: "Yeee-ha! OH, pick it mister!" From the Monkees'"Papa Jean's Blues." When I was a kid, before I knew any better, I thought Nesmith was damned clever to intro HIS OWN SOLO that way...didn't know he had a studio stand-in...

Also: just got through listening to the upcoming Waylon Jennings box set. After he entered his outlaw phase (and ESPECIALLY after he started recording with his road band rather than Nashville studio guys), you could always hear him egging on the musicians everytime the band was about to throw down...usually something simple like "...alright." (I think he's definitely doing this on "Honky Tonk Heroes," when the song changes tempo after the beginning.)

In some other Pretenders song (live cut maybe?), Chrissie eggs on the band with a sly "Girls?..."

yep, live version of "precious," she says, "are you ready girls?" and then the shit just explodes.

Oh wait, that's not really rocking the fuck out.

six years pass...

Wilbert Harrison in "Kansas City": "Aw, but ya know it -- yeah, mercy!"

I've developed a minor fixation with this Wilbert Harrison B-side. What the heck does he yell? (The second one sounds like "Mosquito Legs!!" but no idea about the first. "Ahh Conchy-toochee?")

also i LOVE how JB says "gimme some flute!" in mind power, something about calling out a flautist to rock the fuck out in the middle of a funk jam is just fuckin great

some mc5 song("high school"?) : "Okay kids, let's ROCK this town/joint!"

also, the Aquabats had a track where they'd yell out "1-2-3-4" in japanese in themiddle of the song. classic.

It's not on the studio version (or if it is, I've never been able to hear it), but in live versions of "Super Bad" James says to saxophonist Robert McCullough, "Blow me some Trane!"

Eddie Vedder saying "make me cry, baby" [I think] right before the solo in "Yellow Ledbetter."

LimbsKing, Friday, 11 April 2014 18:31 (ten years ago) link

"CC pick up that guitar and talk to me!"-Poison

Tom Petty's "HEY!" before the solo in "Even the Losers" is a pretty euphoric moment.

"Somebody said fair warning! Lord strike that poor boy down!"-Van Halen

In "The Cover of the Rolling Stone" when Dr. Hook yells out "ROCK AND ROLLLLLLL!!!!!"... and you hear this atrocious out-of-tune electric guitar solo by a guy that clearly can't play the guitar to save his life and at the end Dr.'s like "Aw man, that's beautiful."

i always heard it as "maybe twice," although that's definitely one song where no lyric is clear or makes complete sense

In the best Archers of Loaf song, "Freezing Point," Eric quite succinctly barks, "Guitar!" and out comes the solo...

A slight shame-like, but it's oddly thrilling when the vocalist announces "Drums" just before the drums kick in in Richard X's 'Rock Jacket'
