This is the thread where you can talk about Mystikal

and ask rockist questions like: are his albums as good as his singles? (sterling's placement of "neck uv da woods" on his list got my attention)

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Why would that question ("Are his albums as good as his singles?") be considered 'rockist'?

For what it's worth, I like his current single (the "bouncin' back" one), and I'm a woefully obnoxious rockist and obstreperously proud of it!

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Mystikal album purchasers = chimerikal

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

It's hard to get past the Neptune produced tracks (esp. Shake Yr Ass), and bother w/ the rest of the album, to be honest. I won't even have much of an opinion of other tracks beyond that single anyway. Sounded like 'quality' hip-hop - nice production, MCing, etc. Not as interesting though.

call me shallow... (or just lazy) Am I missing out>?

Michael, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Dude, Earthtone III who does work with Outkast is all over his first album. Cf. "Family". I have yet to get the second.

Sterling Clover, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

First album? What about all those presumably dodgy No Limit releases?

Tim, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

'unpredictable', from 97 i think, is quite good.

ethan, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Mystikal is a great, underrated MC, in my opinion. I never understood his rep as a poor man's DMX -- his voice seems far more James Brown-influenced, and I love his fast-slow, quiet-loud cadences. Ultimately I think the best thing I've ever heard him on was Track 1 of the Blade soundtrack, followed by "Bumpin' Me Against The Wall."

Jack Redelfs, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

That Joe record (Stutter?) that he guested on was pretty good. That was cos of Joe though, not Mystikal.

jacob, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Neptunes = JBs? Why don't they do a whole album? Too expensive?

Tracer Hand, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ah. Korrekt, Tim. I have fallen prey to chart myopia. And, Joe sucked and the only good thing about the song was the Mystikal part.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

NO! Best bit of "Stutter" was the implicit message of video: "Screw ya stutterin' women, we're gonna make our OWN fun!"

Tim, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

best part was hearing passin me by in the charts for the first time in nine years.

ethan, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

one month passes...
I personally think the best part of the 'Stutter' Remix was Mystikal. I mean they both sounded good together but Mystikal just finished the song with an unpredictable, irresistable presentation!

His last album 'Let's Get Ready' was great! Love the songs 'Family', 'Big Truck Boys', 'Shake it fast', 'Danger' (of course), and Mystikal Fever. All the tracks sounded really good! Mystikal just knows a way to come out with the best songs.

His new album 'Tarantula' is also a masterpiece. It is a great album featuring artists like Juvenile, Redman, and Methodman. BUT it's not the guest artists that make the album so great but because Of Mystikal himself. The man can definitely hold his own-I mean after 13 years of rapping, you can only expect the best! The beats are just banging! Some lyrics-just crazy and funny as heck! Other lyrics show the unknown side of the man right chea-like the love song dedicated to his girlfried 'Go Head' and 'Bouncin Back'-the positive uplifting and yet still movable song!

Mystikal definitely has attained success! He has made it to the top and will continue to move and inspire other lives!

Jessica Taylor, Thursday, 7 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Serious question which maybe deserves its own thread -- how important is it that a favorite artist inspires others, whoever those others might be? (As you might guess, I'm fairly selfish, but in the sense that I don't predict or expect someone who has succeeded in capturing my attention to automatically do so elsewhere.) And perhaps related, is inspiration provoked/defined by aspiration?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 7 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

one year passes...
there's meant to be a new album this month, isn't there? or has it been (surprise surprise) delayed?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 2 October 2003 15:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Bouncin' Back" is awesome. The rest of Tarantula, meh. So I suspect I respond more to the Neptunes prod than necessarily Mystikal.

i've been diggin Let's Get Ready recently, good driving music. but what is the deal with that sound effect that appears in almost every Mystikal track. you know, that sound that's like a cross between air being slowly let out of a balloon and a trumpet squeaking a nasty note. is that some sort of trademark of his? and why that sound effect in particular?

his No Limit albums are definitely not dodgy (this thread is 3 years old though so i'll assume you lot have gotten over your kneejerk late-90s-hip-hop-that-is-actually-popular hate[winky]); both unpredictable and ghetto fabulous are absolute classics. especially unpredictable; all pristine mario 64 style beats by KLC and Rick Rock balanced out with the scary/sad pac photocopies like "born 2 be a soldier"/"ghetto child" you should check it out!

xp

scg, Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:25 (nineteen years ago) link

allmusic rap reviews are fun!

Review by Leo Stanley
It's hard to excuse the very name of Concentration Camp, along with the title of their debut album, Da Holocaust. Certainly, good taste has never been an important factor in either hip-hop or rock & roll, but this goes beyond the acceptable, mainly because the group is so bloody average. There is nothing particularly noteworthy in their pedestrian gangsta rap — musically and lyrically, they do little more than wallow in clichés. If they were as provocative as their name, it would be a different matter — it would provide justification for such shock tactics. As it stands, it's just average gangsta rap from average gangstas.

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 05:11 (nineteen years ago) link

u know i interviewed dude from them back in december, hes a christian rapper now but he had some real crazy gossip and shit from workin at p&p from 97-2000, i was gonna put them all together into some kinda article and pitch it to magazine but i got bored w/ it

get tru 2 da game, ghetto d, down south huslters presents bouncin n swangin, trapped in crime, the im bout it soundtrack, my balls & my word, give it 2 em raw (or the streets made me), charge it 2 da game, street life by fiend, no limit top dogg, ice cream man, mp da last don and that first mia x album and tell me that mystikal was the best thing to come outta no limit!@!

ok maybe replace best w/ most original or charismatic. i feel like he pissed it away though. there is no way i'd put a master p album above him. and snoop doesn't count as he wasn't really from the label was he? he already has his thing going. the rest i'd have to hear. haven't heard much c-murder but his pictures are creepy. are those his real eyes? he looks blind or something.

avdn there was a FLYING COCKROACH!!!!!!

haha are you down in GA?

anyway, is this the thread where you can talk about Mystikal No Limit?

Oh man, that All Hip Hop article is pissing me off: "You know, he used to save puppies and kittens before that gang rape and he even paid her off...I dunno why the judge is being so harsh with him!" Grrr!

Yeah Candicissima its foul the way they cover that shit.

for allegedly assaulting his former hairstylist.

Don't they mean "gang raping his former hairstylist on camera"?

"his No Limit albums are definitely not dodgy (this thread is 3 years old though so i'll assume you lot have gotten over your kneejerk late-90s-hip-hop-that-is-actually-popular hate[winky]); both unpredictable and ghetto fabulous are absolute classics. especially unpredictable; all pristine mario 64 style beats by KLC and Rick Rock balanced out with the scary/sad pac photocopies like "born 2 be a soldier"/"ghetto child" you should check it out! "

After my kneejerkery upthread I actually picked up Unpredictable a few years back and really like it a lot - sadly that stuff can be hard to track down in Australia these days (anyone who knows of any remaining motherlodes in Melbourne please share). I've heard bad things about Ghetto Fabulous though - what's it like?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:39 (nineteen years ago) link

great thread. glad you mentioned snoop, i think no limit top dogg was the first time i heard southern rappers, got it on a c90 from some dude at school, i love "my heat goes boom", "down for my niggas" with c murder, that fucked up song where snoop's like cinderella or something, "ghetto symphony" with c murder, fiend (!!) and goldie loc and the awesome posse cut over that james brown (i think?? i don't know shit about classic soul) piano sample, "gangsta ride" with silkk was a revelation, i don't think i ever heard such an unhinged, manic voice before. are you a fan of those west coast bad boyz comps? saw one in fopp for cheap the other day, might pick it up tomorrow.

scg, Friday, 29 July 2005 15:13 (nineteen years ago) link

mane the cool thing about living in chicago (on the north side anyway) is all the 'hip-hop' kids who dump tons of cash on All Natural and Molemen LPs and leave all kinds of southern and west coast gangsta comps in the discount bin. I've copped so much great shit that way! Dr. Wax on berwyn in edgewater has tons of discounted no limit, for example. Its how I picked up "Ice Cream Man" for cheap. pd, is there a reason you didn't mention Tru's "True" in your list of great no limit albums?! I like that one a lot.

Also I think someone should drop an LP called average gangsta rap from average gangstas.

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 15:25 (nineteen years ago) link

ghetto fabulous is pretty good, i think classic is probably a bit strong, in terms of production it's a step up from unpredictable and it has the beautiful "life aint cool" and "watcha want watcha need", i haven't really listened to it that much to be honest, you probably only really need unpredictable. you should def. check out life or death by c murder if you haven't already who's a far more charismatic rapper over the course of an album than mystikal is.

xp

yeah i love tru! i only got true 2 da game which is another classic post-pac rap album (was anyone releasing better shit than no limit in 1997?). there were rumours of a tru reunion before c murder went down, wasn't there?

scg, Friday, 29 July 2005 15:33 (nineteen years ago) link

i mean, i know they released the truth in 2004, but that's not actually classic tru, is it?

scg, Friday, 29 July 2005 15:35 (nineteen years ago) link

I didnt like The Truth very much, the single was pretty awesome but I think my favorite track was the C-Murder one and I'd rather just listen to C-Murder's new album in that case. True is great though! If you haven't heard it check it out, I think its '95. Its got "bout it bout it" and that beautiful "fuck them hoes" track (yes yes i know) with that saxophone and mia x threatening to make your mouth look like a piano.

deej.., Friday, 29 July 2005 15:47 (nineteen years ago) link

here's icarus' post on 'early mystikal,' I figure it relates to this thread. I'm not familiar enough w mystikal's catalogue beyond the singles and airbrushed t-shirts girls wore in high school to really say much though.

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The double-CD set that No Limit godfather Master P envisioned as his final solo album, MP Da Last Don was greeted with reams of press clippings by the media and open arms by the public, who sent it to 112 on the charts, the week before it was scheduled to be released. All this means is that Master P's master business plan worked -- he was able to position himself as the leader of the underground just to sell records. And there's no other way to view MP Da Last Don; it's nothing but product, albeit well-made product. Spanning two CDs and 29 songs, the album is more of an advertisement for upcoming No Limit releases than a last will and testament. All of the No Limit roster appears somewhere on the disc, and info about upcoming releases (some of which have been in development for a year and a half) litters the liner notes. Master P himself makes his presence felt only because the formula MP Da Last Don follows is one he invented. If you've ever heard a No Limit record, you'll know what to expect -- cribbed hooks, predictable bass grooves, and drum loops, the standard gangsta lyrical clichés. The law of averages dictates that there will be a few passable tracks on an album this size, but there is no variety here at all -- you could start the album at any point and feel like you've heard it all before. So, Da Last Don isn't a grand final statement from Master P, though its crass commercialism and blatant hucksterism offers as accurate a summation of Master P's career as anyone could hope.

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

On the surface, Ghetto D may look like another piece of product from Master P's No Limit empire, and there's a certain amount of truth to that. Master P is a master marketer and knows how to create demand for his product, which means informing the public that it is out there. He spreads the word about future No Limit releases throughout Ghetto D: artwork for forthcoming albums forms 90 percent of the album's artwork, and No Limit artists rap on the record as much as Master P himself. As a result, Ghetto D plays much like one of the West Coast Bad Boyz discs -- it sounds like a various-artists sampler. And not only does it sound like a various-artists record, it also sounds like a virtual catalog of '90s rap styles, from wimpy Bone Thugs-n-Harmony ballads ("I Miss My Homies") to Wu-Tang craziness ("Let's Get 'Em") to G-funk ("Weed & Money"). Master P is a consummate rip-off artist, capable of copying any number of popular records and styles with flair. He's done this on almost all of No Limit's records, but what makes Ghetto D different is the ease of the whole thing. Master P is using better equipment this time around, which helps him make better, more seamless records, thereby making his facsimiles sound similar to the originals. The shameless rip-offs make Ghetto D an entertaining listen -- it's fun to guess who the No Limit crew is ripping off now -- yet it's hampered by its ridiculous 80-minute running time. Theoretically, it gives you more bang for your buck, but by the ninth song, "Captain Kirk," the album seems endless. However, that overindulgence is a hallmark of Master P and No Limit, and that's what makes Ghetto D his definitive statement.

One of hip-hop's most unique voices, Mystikal, will be performing at SOB's on Tuesday May 1st 2012. Fresh out of prison, this is Mystikal's first show in New York in over 8 years. Looks like this may be his last show in a while, and you know the energy is going to be INsane, so you definitely don't want to miss it. Danger!
