40 . Color Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up

J0rdan S., Thursday, 3 January 2008 06:46 (seventeen years ago) link

After watching all five hours minus commercials of this, I've come to realize that the '90s were kind of awesome.

milo z, Thursday, 3 January 2008 06:46 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm really pissed that i only saw 20-1 of this

J0rdan S., Thursday, 3 January 2008 06:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Terribly disappointing that "Mother, Mother" didn't crack the list.

milo z, Thursday, 3 January 2008 06:48 (seventeen years ago) link

the ass-end of music on this list, and Blues Traveler is the most ass.

72. Barenaked Ladies - One Week

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 3 January 2008 07:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Wow, this was tough. Back Street Boys were running away with it 'til I saw Celine; I couldn't decide between the two. Then I saw the Spin Doctors and the choice was made. Man did I loathe the Spin Doctors back then. Dudes somehow had two or three huge hits but they were all the exact same song.

The Cranberries. Dolores O'Riordan: worst lyricist ever?

MaggieGo, Thursday, 3 January 2008 09:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Barenaked Ladies.

"Ice Ice Baby".

And I can't believe people still voted for that as a good song more than 10 years later. Hip-hop-fans hate it too, right?

1. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

groovemaaan, Thursday, 3 January 2008 10:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Killing your brain like a post by Hongro.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 3 January 2008 10:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Cranberries have bad lyrics, but Linger is a terrific song.

I went for Spin Doctors, the only song here that makes me physically ill.

The Wayward Johnny B, Thursday, 3 January 2008 10:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Ugh. This is what 70s lists used to be like.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 3 January 2008 11:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Choosing one to vote for wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, "Sex And Candy" just edging out "You're Still The One."

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 3 January 2008 13:57 (seventeen years ago) link

'achy breaky heart' probably.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 3 January 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Meredith Brooks' "Bitch" would always fly me into a rage merely because it's in that class of song that sounds exactly like it could be a Pepsi commercial.

But between "I Don't Want To Wait," "Sex and Candy," and "Shine," I just melt down. I hated 90s popular music, and a sure disappointment of aging (I'm only 33) is the realization that every bad popular song that is released must be heard over and over and over again until death. They. Never. Go. Away.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 3 January 2008 14:21 (seventeen years ago) link

It's not just that it is what it is.

90s pop music artists labored under ridiculous pressure to sound "alternative." I get tired just hearing their desperation.

All the doofus hair metal guys getting haircuts and wearing paisley shirts. Managers scrambling to find vintage t-shirts for their acts...

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 3 January 2008 14:30 (seventeen years ago) link

If you're question is directed at my use of pop, ledge, I merely mean on MTV, written about in Billboard, most-likely covered in Rolling Stone or Spin. A group that is "of the moment.

I don't mean that a group is "of the people," an artist that can fill a large hall on a Tuesday night, or a performer who stands the test of time.

I mean what you probably think I mean when you don't look at it too hard.

__________

og, that one guy? what's that mean?

Jewel - Who Will Save Your Soul
Fiona Apple - Criminal
Edwin McCain - I'll Be
Duncan Sheik - Barely Breathing

you're not missing much with those songs. it is kind of odd/funny how Liz Phair is pretty much the one token college radio/indie selection on this list (as far as stuff that wasn't a big obvious mainstream alt-rock hit).

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 3 January 2008 14:59 (seventeen years ago) link

"Supernova" would have fit the list a lot better.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 3 January 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Whitney. Close call though, was going to vote for Hootie and the Blowfish.

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 3 January 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm very glad I read the list closely enough to see that Live was on there, making my job very easy.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 3 January 2008 16:36 (seventeen years ago) link

This is actually a really DULL list more than anything, a rote collection of miscellaneous songs, many of which I sorta like, a handful of which I love...and, crucially, almost none of which I really hate.

On careful inspection, the ONLY ones of these that I know that I really would never ever want to hear again under any circumstances are "Teen Spirit," "I Don't Want to Wait," and "Say My Name." There are several others that I don't really care for but haven't heard in years and wouldn't change the channel on (Sugar Ray for example). I'm pretty convinced that "Teen Spirit" and "Say My Name" are victims of overplay - but I hated the Paula Cole song from the first time I heard it. Godawful annoying.

Yeah, I guess I should qualify my "I Don't Wanna Wait" vote by saying that I haven't heard (or don't recognize by name) any of the following, so they might be worse than that one:

10. Sinéad O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U
14. Mariah Carey - Vision of Love
21. Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On
30. *NSYNC - Tearin' Up My Heart
40 . Color Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up

24. House of Pain - Jump Around

(See, I had no idea he was involved in that, either! He was a bit ahead of me at the second high school I went to, which was in the town where the AMG started; I think he started writing for them pretty early on and has done incredibly well at it.)

BEST song on this list, meanwhile, is probably Black Hole Sun.

um, cher, people? by a street. haven't heard of at least twenty of these, so crossover isn't total.

it's a pretty crappy list, though. nothing like a real top 100 of the nineties, which would be 1 tasmin archer, 2 blur and the rest oasis.

darraghmac, Friday, 4 January 2008 12:51 (seventeen years ago) link

1. Tasmin Archer 2. Blur and the rest Oasis would be closer to my taste than this, but this is obviously an American list or Hootie & The Blowfish and Counting Crows would never have been in there.

darraghmac, Friday, 4 January 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago) link

A vote for "I Alone" is a vote for the entire corpus of overwrought bellowers who were the worst thing about the '90s, so bad that in their ghastly retrospective light it's hard to enjoy listening to their forbears, e.g. the perfectly respectable "Jeremy."

While songs which are intrinsically equally terrible, like "Mr. Jones," and "Only Wanna Be With You," stand only for themselves.

Songs on the list which are widely hated by those in the know, yet are actually truly great: "You Oughtta Know" (The War Against Silence has written tens of thousands of words making the case for AM, well worth reading). "Vision of Love" is breathtaking though Mariah never approached it again. And "Peaches." Which, OK, is kind of no more than a goof on the overwrought bellowers above, but what a goof! The couplet "Peaches come in can / They were put there by a man" when the guitars kick in more or less annihilates the entire recorded work of Live. Of course, "Lump" is better still.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 4 January 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago) link

It's unfair to pick just one, there are at least ten songs on that list just as awful. And even though it's probably social suicide on ILM to say so, Semi-Charmed Life IS one of them.

dad a, Friday, 4 January 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago) link

The are the only GREAT songs on the list:

1. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
2. U2 - One
9. R.E.M. - Losing My Religion
22. Beck - Loser
31. Radiohead - Creep
35. Oasis - Wonderwall
41. Spin Doctors - Two Princes
51. Tupac (featuring Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman) - California Love *
58. Sophie B. Hawkins - Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover
59. Weezer - Buddy Holly
61. Sheryl Crow - All I Wanna Do
90. New Radicals - You Get What You Give

* Only in its G-funk styled album version, but I believe that is the version used in the video too.

Out of those, "Wonderwall" would be the one and only obvious pick if I was to pick the best track. That song may be one of the ten best songs of the 90s, and few hitlist items were.

Which talking head was your friend, nabisco? = St3v3 Hu3y of AMG)

I had no idea he was an AMG guy! I thought he was just The Dude from Yacht Rock.

A good friend of mine was friends with him in college (the big one in the town where AMG started) and he used to hang out the house where she and my wife lived. He was known as "Skinny St3v3" to distinguish him from a more rotund guy with the same name.

My wife and I ended up seeing most of the top 100 over the past month on VH1 and it seriously freaked both of us out to see him popping up on our TV every so often, particularly because he looks pretty much exactly the same.

Anyway, I hated lots of these songs when they were around and have since come around to liking them. However, I seriously hated the New Radicals song back in 98 or whatever and hearing it again only made me hate it more.

15. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under the Bridge

Yeah, I'm kind of on the same page there. It's pleasant I guess - can anyone articulate why it was such a huge hit? (I have nothing against TLC mind you - "No Scrubs" is classic and I had a high school crush on Left Eye.)

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 5 January 2008 05:18 (seventeen years ago) link

"Waterfalls" was 'important'. It had a verse about AIDS in an era when that was like doing a song about 9/11. Go fig, I never liked it either.

I never understood the love for "Waterfalls" either. TLC sitting pretty in the top ten while En Vogue languish in the 40's is RONG.

The answer to this thread lies in a Joan Osborne vs Marcy Playground vs Meredith Brooks deathmatch. At least with "One of Us" I can be entertained by laughing at the gawdawful lyrics, whereas "Sex and Candy" basically just makes me cringe and has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Right Said Fred - I'm Too Sexy is the worst of these songs, though it's not thaaat bad.

On "Waterfalls": I don't know why it was a big single, but what I love about it is the really dry production, esp. on the drum sound. Listen to how the song starts: the drums crackle and pop (it's an Organized Noise production) and then the keyboards just slink around. It's a really spare sound, and even without a "sensitive" lyric it sounds terrific.
