Nicolas Jaar: I was a Teenage Villalobos

Message Bookmarked

This is the thread to discuss the wunderkind producer Nicolas Jaar.

Typical teenage boy, loves Satie and Mulatu Astatke. At 14, he decides he loves techno too, even though the only thing he's heard at that point is Tiga's DJ Kicks. His father, the artist and filmmaker Alfredo Jaar, goes to a record store in Chile and says 'Give me the most forward-thinking electronic music album right now', comes home with Thé Au Harem D'Archimède. Dad gives him the Villalobos album ("the sexiest thing I'd ever heard") and Luomo's Vocalcity for Christmas that year. Nico starts making tracks, gets hooked up with Wolf + Lamb a couple of years later, and there you go.

Additional charming details in the Philip Sherburne interview.

Jaw-droppingly good Resident Advisor podcast available on soundcloud (tracklist).

His original tracks, many done before he turned 18, are also up on soundcloud.

My tracklist for the Essential Nico:
*Time For Us
*Mi Mujer
*No Regular Play - Owe Me (Nicolas Jaar remix)
*WOUH
*Love You Gotta Lose Again
*Hage Chahine (ft Will Epstein)
*John the Revelator
*Marquises
*El Bandido
*Kasper Bjorke - Heaven (Nicolas Jaar remix)
*DJ T - Gorilla Hug (Nicolas Jaar remix)
*Mini Calcutta
*Russian Dolls
*Your Waltz
*Nico's Feeling Good

Easily my favorite and most listened to music of the year.

only heard him on thu for the first time - i was doing a radio show with braiden, who's been raving about him for a while - and was totally blown away. love the bluesy vocals, love the way every track ends up somewhere completely different to its start. would add "marks", "angles" and his remix of ellen allien's "flashy flashy" to the must-hear list.

he has a comp coming out in a week or two, right? called inès. can't wait m8

Finally decided to take matters into my own hands. Never started a thread before, been reading ILM since the very beginning.

Love Nicolas Jaar. He's had an incredible few years. He wrote to me in 2007, sending a song called "Little Stone" (much more, um, folktronica? than his techno now, but still really excellent). He was 17 and calling himself "Nico" - and it was plausible to me he didn't realise there already a famous Nico. A couple years later, he's doing tracks like "John the Revelator" - and now he's a Mutek fixture, a Resident Advisor wunderkind, just making beautiful subtle new things. So happy for him.

Sean: repost?

My favorite of his remixes is still "Owe Me", which reminds me of early Matthew Herbert (the remixes on Secondhand Sounds). The staticky clicks and pops and the echoey handclap and the wobbly keyboard and the filtered vocals -- it's all just so choice. Then the surf comes in.

The Amy Misto Family Knife (Plasmon), Saturday, 27 November 2010 19:36 (thirteen years ago) link

edits ep is all ive heard, it was nice but a bit. i mean i kinda like everything i've heard on w+l bc thats an aesthetic that appeals to me, but its a bit on the subtle end

plax (ico), Saturday, 27 November 2010 20:05 (thirteen years ago) link

His solo debut on Circus Company is breathtakingly good, in the same way that early dOP stuff was. my only complaint is that he samples "I Got A Woman" on one track, which i find a bit much. otherwise, i'd say it's a perfect record.

I know most are going to disagree, but this is absolutely 100% OTM.

I saw him play live at Mutek last June. Very enjoyable, despite having an indoor set at 3PM playing to a mostly empty room. Expect it to be slow, too.

I dunno, it feels a bit soon for everyone to get carried away but it seems like a bandwagon has started rolling around this dude very quickly indeed. Then again, he's working withing a style where people are predisposed to throw around words like 'genius' very easily.

I like WUOH and Time For Us and what he does to Flashy Flashy, but I listened to the Marks & Angles EP and it just sounded dreary rather than hypnotic. I kinda feel like post-Villalobos there's almost no element or style that feels too weird to throw into this kind of framework, and it has a kind of dulling effect. Materials is pretty good though. We'll see.

mostly agree with matt xp. time for us is the best thing he's done by a mile i think. i would really really like to hear him work with a good vocalist. think i read an interview where he said as much also. maybe he does on some of the forthcoming stuff? not that the slo-mo treated thing can't work too... like marks/angles isn't amazing overall, but it seems like he's starting to get the vocals to mesh with the production in interesting ways.

and will he further explore marksist politics in dance music?

straight old fashioned, virgin (another al3x), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 03:45 (thirteen years ago) link

I think he sounds like Matias Aguayo, even thought it was him at first. He has some better ideas than him from time to time but I'll agree with karl: he should abstain from vocal duties.

I am listening to it now (NB I have basically learned everything about him from this thread!), so far it's great and completely unconcerned by ~the dancefloor~ - there are a lot of moody pianos and a track that was like idk Barry Adamson crossed with microhouse or somesuch - I'm not really one for overstating the weather-appropriateness of music but 8am in a REALLY cold December is kind of where this is at I think

...almost too elegant though? (in the case of his album at least). I appreciate what he's doing, but the LP... There's a fair bit going on, but not a lot to get your teeth into. It's almost an ambient record, with few beats going much higher than 110bpm. Think I need to give it a few more listens.

Compilation of tracks released on Jaar's Clown & Sunset label.

Has some other artists on there as well as Jaar but it's all in that slightly glitchy percussive ethnodelic style.

Tim F, Monday, 10 January 2011 14:33 (thirteen years ago) link

xposts Yes I'm all for it too - certainly not a bad thing. It's almost becoming the norm for hotly-tipped dance acts releasing very restrained and non-dancey debut LPs at the moment. James Blake, Darkstar and now this. Aeroplane's album kind of tried (and failed) at doing an album that deviated from expectations. That said, I guess it was a bit more predictable with Jaar, but I'd have liked an album of El Bandido-style stuff.

Bernard V. O'Hare (dog latin), Monday, 10 January 2011 14:35 (thirteen years ago) link

He started of at 70bpm and the crowd lapped it up , it made the changes throughout the set epic and his music on a good quality sound system was incredible. The man was like an artist and the whole crowd responded. he even SANG the vocal parts on his tracks - NO JOKE! i love my tech house/ deep house / minimal nights where the dancing is relentless however seeing Jaar is something different and something special - dont judge until you see his live act in a club setting - its surprising how well it works. He is the 2nd best live act in the Resident advisor polls for a reason.

What you guys think of the album?

rihanna rennavated my dick (rennavate), Friday, 14 January 2011 00:23 (thirteen years ago) link

It's growing on me actually. I was comparing it to James Blake upthread, and while there are similarities, it's a lot less slap-dash than his album.

Bernard V. O'Hare (dog latin), Friday, 14 January 2011 01:17 (thirteen years ago) link

I would say the key distinction between Jaar and Blake is that Jaar can be loose but is never messy.

Tim F, Friday, 14 January 2011 01:25 (thirteen years ago) link

At the moment it's reminding me of Joakim's first couple of albums. Only a bit sonically, but mainly due to the sense of 4-5 really nice pieces being lost in the haze of excessive interludes, transitions, intros, and outros.

Jedmond, Friday, 14 January 2011 01:31 (thirteen years ago) link

i like the album (on one listen) but, while i wouldn't say it's a disappointment exactly - i should at least give it time to grow on me - i prefer the singles. it's not necessarily the non-dancefloor focus that's the reason, i just feel like there's less focus full stop. people who are disappointed by it could do a lot worse than checking out frivolous's imminent meteorology album on cadenza

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 14 January 2011 07:44 (thirteen years ago) link

How similar is Meteorology to his Couples Therapy 12"?

Jedmond, Friday, 14 January 2011 08:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Which I loved, partly because it reminded me Horror Inc.

Jedmond, Friday, 14 January 2011 08:13 (thirteen years ago) link

no idea - this is the first frivolous stuff i've heard.

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 14 January 2011 08:13 (thirteen years ago) link

but clearly i need to hear it if it reminds you of horror inc!

(not my first point of comparison for the album, which sounds a lot warmer, but thinking about it the intricacy and use of melody are def comparable)

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 14 January 2011 08:19 (thirteen years ago) link

comparison/comparable aargh must drink coffee

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 14 January 2011 08:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Well I threw away the word "of" so... But on a re-listen it definitely sounds similar to Horror Inc (at least Horror Inc via Cadenza). Not just in terms of the intricacy, but also Frivolous' use of the same kind of musicbox and string sounds (at least on the track My Consciousness).

Jedmond, Friday, 14 January 2011 08:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Frivolous has pretty much always been on key.

EDB, Friday, 14 January 2011 15:43 (thirteen years ago) link

I would say the key distinction between Jaar and Blake is that Jaar can be loose but is never messy.

who here has seen him live again? like is it *actually* possible to dance yr ass off when this guy plays?

plax (ico), Friday, 14 January 2011 22:28 (thirteen years ago) link

I saw him, however he played to an huge, virtually empty room at 2PM. It was a lot of fun: he started out dancey, 110 bpmish, then pulled it down to downtempo stuff, where it did become more of a sliding and gliding affair. Also, this was last May, and I also kind of like the stuff he was doing a year ago more than his more up to date output.

EDB, Saturday, 15 January 2011 00:13 (thirteen years ago) link

I wish his sound design were more interesting -- I find a lot of the sounds themselves (electric pianos, or their stand-ins, for instance) a little underwhelming. The ideas are nice, but I wish the execution were a little more fully-formed.

And Plaxico, I don't really understand what you mean about my "deal" in that interview.

kinda surprised that people are disappointed with the album, i think it's amazing. it's funny cause i actually *do* feel that the ideas on this are more focused/fully-formed than those on say the ines comp, which seems a bit sketchier and more obtuse to me (almost idm, reminds me of earlier four tet at times). also i kinda love the vox, esp if you compare them to james blake or superpitcher or even caribou (and 'swim' was my favorite record last year fwiw)

The album's clicked for me. I listened to it in the dark on headphones. It's very impressive, and much more singer/songwritey in places than James Blake. Really looking forward to catching him at Fabric in March - is anyone going to this? I have a feeling I may be on my jack.

Ah sorry mcoll, thought you were being dancist. Personally think the more discerning indie contingent need jaar in their lives right now and I'm not too surprised they're lapping up the new album, given its abstractions and quirks. But hey, no problem with that. Is it daft to ask whether jaar or Blake could become the new Richard d james? ie dance maverick releases art album gets adopted by indies and guardian supplement readers etc?

chandelier falling through a bar in a batman costume (dog latin), Friday, 18 February 2011 10:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Even the average Burial fan has little idea of who he actually is/what he looks like. Good as his work is, I don't think he has the personality nor the eclecticism to compete as a modern-day Aphex in terms of impact upon the wider world like James did.

never change, dog latin ;)

roy stride or die (nakhchivan), Friday, 18 February 2011 10:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Well you didn't mention looks or personality in your initial criteria. I don't know what an "art album" or for that matter a "dance maverick" but it's not like there's been a hole where the dance producer who indie listeners and Guardian supplements like should be. That's obviously been Burial for a couple of years at least. It doesn't matter whether such a producer exists anyway, apart from making a certain type of dance listener feel good about themselves.

I'm liking this album a lot more now I've been listening to it on headphones, in a lot of ways his production style feels more Geoff Barrow than Villalobos - more crackly, soundtracky. In two minds about the Fabric gig though, this music just doesn't feel like it would be that interesting in a live setting with a live band.

I don't like Taylor Swift but I'd go and see her if I were you, it'll almost certainly be a good gig whereas Jaar could go either way. And you'll almost certainly have like 20 opportunities to see Nicolas Jaar in London in the next couple of years.

Matt DC, Friday, 18 February 2011 10:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Definitely a headphones album. Sounds like an art installation on regular speakers. Personally, I'm kind of hyped for the Fabric set to be honest. I don't think he'll let us down.

Apologies to Matt upthread - I was kind of sleepy on the train into work and just having a brainshit into my iphone.

Although, y'know I think there's something to be said for people like Blake and Jaar having, what Tim F I think called, "the Aphex Twin factor" on the Blake thread. That is: A solid dance background; A flexible approach to making music that is apparent from release to release; A tangible image that people can latch on to (helps that both Jaar and Blake are good-looking, James not so much); Certain arty (but not art-school) tendencies (I see "Space Is Only Noise" as a kind of SAWII, while the earlier singles are Jaar's Analogue Bubblebaths); the ability to crossover from 'proper' dance to indie dance to middlebrow media without pandering to a mainstream or compromising their initial values... Just saying I see quite a few parallels, so I'm not surprised Pitchfork are giving this the thumbs up.

ford lopatin (dog latin), Wednesday, 30 March 2011 14:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Wish I was going, but an old friend is in town that night, and I'd feel harsh about missing out on seeing them.

I imagine the live set up will be great and a psyched crowd will really add to it.

that said, I've only seen bands on a Fabric night and not as a concert venue.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Wednesday, 30 March 2011 15:12 (thirteen years ago) link

If the venue's open til 1am I would assume he'll be playing until 1 - according to the Fabric website there's a support act but dunno who. If you need to leave at, say, 11 for your last train you run the risk of missing the whole thing.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 15:19 (thirteen years ago) link

adult music person (Jordan), Wednesday, 30 March 2011 15:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Last train's at 1:36. I hope he's not playing til 1, on a Wednesday that's pretty late for people living outside of Zone 1.

ford lopatin (dog latin), Wednesday, 30 March 2011 16:03 (thirteen years ago) link

He'll play 10 / 10:30 till 12, anyone in London who plays after 12ish and doesnt expect the entire crowd to leave for the last tube is an idiot,

There will most likely be a dj till 12 for people to dance to after the live stuff..

That said, if anyone is going to play late & loud, it would be at Fabric.

misty sensorium (Plasmon), Thursday, 31 March 2011 00:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah it ruled. I turned up right at the beginning an hung around like Gary no pals for two hours, then I had to leave at the end of bandido cos I was worried about missing the train (plus it was ridiculously crowded, maybe the promoters had underestimated the popularity of the night?). Did I miss much after el bandido? What I found impressive was how the little nuances of tracks off the album suddenly became hugely catchy earworms live. And yes the band were incredible. The drummer has a real flair for jiggedy beats. The sax was something else too.

lol is not enough (blank), Wednesday, 10 August 2011 22:43 (thirteen years ago) link

i have a question about his production (and i know nothing about production so please humour me).

the records that he puts out have a very idiosyncratic sound, it seems to me. appropriately, perhaps(given the album title) i'll describe it in spatial terms because i think that way. each sound sounds very separated from all the others, it's almost like each sound is a sphere of sound within a room and that sphere is travelling forward but not colliding with the other parts of the mix. that individual (spherical) sound is very separated from the other sounds within the mix and those other sounds occupy a similar separated space - each sound had a field around it which prevents it from touching the other sounds in the mix, does that make sense? amazingly he does make those separated sound make a whole

i love this effect but, at the same time, i find it wearing to listen to at a stretch. i can't listen to "space is only noise" from beginning to end, it's too taxing.

so the question is, does he have a unique talent here? or are other producers capable of achieving this effect but realise that used, over a long stretch, it can have a negative effect and so hold back from using it too much?

or possibly you just disagree with me or don't get that sonic overload effect that i do.

or maybe you just think i'm talking nonsense!

jed_, Wednesday, 10 August 2011 23:00 (thirteen years ago) link

(that is really garbled, sorry, but i don't really have the language to discuss these things)

jed_, Wednesday, 10 August 2011 23:01 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't know, but you're making me want to listen to this stuff again!

maybe i'm just jaded and hard to thrill these days but a lot of his stuff sounds really interesting and beautiful but doesn't give me the sort of kick i look for in this sort of music. maybe it's a phase.

Uncleared sample situation;

I had a defining moment with this album, when I played the CD through a hi-fi that had also been set up for TV surround-sound, in a large, tall, split-level space with a great acoustic. As there was a speaker in each corner, I found myself walking slowly round the room and experiencing each sonic element if it were a separate spatial entity. It was, um, pretty amazing really.

^^ Jealous, I always had the creeping feeling that when I listen to this on headphones or my cheap monitors or the lousy stereo downstairs, that I'm not doing this album justice. Sound design is getting so good these days, but unless you have a decent space and system, it's largely lost.

dog latin, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 09:32 (thirteen years ago) link

hmm not for me, i've only ever had "wouh" as a standalone thing (think it was released separately too). only have the other two on the inès comp.

i don't think the bluewave edits, or any of jaar's edits, are nearly as good as the rest of his stuff - even the album is better. they seem a bit precious and mimsy.

irina-camelia begu (lex pretend), Thursday, 12 January 2012 09:16 (twelve years ago) link

I'm pretty sure I can also enjoy Wouh separately as well.

Even What My Last Girl Put Me Through? Considering how sample heavy his tracks are it seems a losing proposition to spend too much time distinguishing between his edits and his edits which he's worked on longer. Plus I find the reverse, Jaar's edits/sampling stops him from getting to micro-precious.

Jedmond, Thursday, 12 January 2012 09:40 (twelve years ago) link

This is true. I don't really hear that much distinction between the tracks proper and the edits. It's all of a part - the album material, the dancier singles and the edits. I really like the Work It edit too.

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 12 January 2012 10:53 (twelve years ago) link

Plus the edits give you a bit of background on some of his tastes and how they fit into the rest of his work - who'd have thought that the Grateful Dead's disco period or Love Potion No.9 would be such an influence on a sound like this?

main thing i didn't like about this mix is how many long stretches of beatlessness, or at least drum-lessness, there were. his use of percussion is my favourite thing about him as an artist & he has a great ear for beats, his use of space & texture is really cool too obv but moreso when it's complementing something rythm-based than just pure sound

Played this mix 3 more times in full. It's one of the most audacious mixes I've ever heard. It's unbelievable that he used his Essential Mix for this type of mix instead of just playing 2hrs of house.

Ah, beat me to it. The mix flows way better now.

Listened to this today for the first time since the few weeks after it came out -- perfect fit for a grey and windy day. The opening with Badalamenti getting all enraptured is magical. I love the Baroque trio piece followed by Keith Jarrett, and the Leonard Cohen cover, and surprise, the Feist song. I can see how this can seem like forced eclecticism, but so much of it is so good that I'd rather not see him edit himself too much.

This is still the best part:

Plasmon, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 05:47 (twelve years ago) link

Wait, never noticed the question about the Prism.

It took 2 weeks to arrive, typical for shipping to Canada. It's smaller than I expected, sits easily in the palm of my hand. It's an attractive little box. The buttons aren't labelled, so it's not intuitive to use. The music is hit and miss. Nico's stuff (Don't Break My Love, Why Didn't You Save Me, the covers of Ishmael and Avalanche) is great, the rest of it didn't stick with me. Haven't listened to it mich -- too much hassle to rip it and can't be bothered to carry it around.

A terrific little set at the Mondrian Hotel as part of Art Basel -- until he approached curfew. "I have time for one more...?" he asked hopefully, glancing at the sound mixer. A 1:30 later the hotel cut the power.

The crowd was small enough for me to approach him afterwards and chat for about a minute. I mentioned watching him at Pitchfork in July, which surprised him.

This is what makes him boring IMO, a lot of it just doesn't feel interesting enough musically, like if you saw a real band playing music like this it would just feel aimless, but it's not propulsive or hypnotic enough to work as techno either.

this is strange to me, i like inès for what it is, a label sampler, but it's really slight - as an overall listen it's not that satisfying, it doesn't do that self-contained world thing that jaar's best works do so well

i basically think this dude has 75% immaculate taste, 25% cornball in a pretty bad way. bbc essential mix, griz & eno remixes, this album all p disapointing. he's always had a corny sid eto him, i think. his beats in space (maybe he's done one since but the first one where he plays a bunch of instrumental hip hop) was really interesting as a way to understand where he's coming from but had some clunkers iirc. his first run of singles (basically everything i downloaded from this thread, up to bluewave edits & excluding space) is still my favourite, if i can cheat that way

This is what makes him boring IMO, a lot of it just doesn't feel interesting enough musically, like if you saw a real band playing music like this it would just feel aimless, but it's not propulsive or hypnotic enough to work as techno either.

haven't heard the album, but saw Darkside live in January and it was TOTALLY intense and propulsive (Harrington played cello as well as gtr btw)

kinda surprised they sold out the Fillmore, even some of my Jaar-loving friends didn't know who was playing

cristalnacht (lukas), Tuesday, 28 January 2014 02:36 (ten years ago) link

SF crowds can be the worst. I had to leave a Pat Mahoney DJ set because the dance floor was clogged with people staring at their iphones.

Fetchboy, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 06:50 (ten years ago) link

Missed that SF show. Scalpers wanted to charge 60. No Thanks.

That being said, when I read it I was at the Fillmore I was underwhelmed.
The sound there is hit/miss plus the concert crowd vibe for a Jaar show was not what I wanted. Looks like my instinct was correct.

I have been watching his live shows on youtube and I am convinced Darkside is getting BETTER in a short amount of time of touring.

My main beef with Darkside has been the overuse of Dave's guitar and at times Jaar's vocals.

I watched this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPRQBSitPOQ

Paper Trails has always been the song that exhibits those two qualities to a larger effect. However, in just a few months Dave has toned down on the guitar solo side of things and is more restrained, more focused on sonic ambience and melody. He still tweaks out solos but its in service of the groove. This may seem like a subtle thing but it has made me like Darkside much more. Also, Nico is becoming even more adept at switching from minimal/maximal when it comes to the midi controller and the beats. His vocals also seem more confident and natural. I always sensed a hint of affect in his vocals on the Darkside project (really all of his vocals) but i think he's getting more comfortable. Overall, I am super pleased with where they are going and I have to catch them next time around.

Apparently this is an alternate soundtrack that Jaar made for the movie 'The Colour of Pomegranates' from 1969. It's a film with some breath-taking imagery and it's among my favorite films from the decade. Don't know if this is commissioned work or just a fan hommage by Jaar but makes me happy this exists.

I still haven't listened to the album. Anyone knows if there's a version that pairs the original movie with this alt. soundtrack?

Ok, 10 minutes in and this is great! The original film is one of my favorite movies from the 60's and Jaar is one of my favorite artists of the past decade! Seeing/hearing the two together is amazing. It would be so good if he started doing alt. soundtracks of 60's/70's trippy arthouse films for fun as a series. Other films which would be great if soundtracked by Jaar:

Sedmikrasky (1966)
Funeral Parade of Roses (1969)
WR: Mysteries of the Organism (1971)
The Devils (1971)
Zabriskie Point (1970)
Diabel (1972)

OTM with his solo stuff, but I still really love his Darkside work the most. But yeah, it feels like he's already lost the energy and vitality that his early teenage tracks had and has self indulged bit too heavily these days. His RA 500 mix was okay.

Damn, what's the sample (or reference since they're presumably replaying it) on Liberty Bell? That two-note guitar part is driving me crazy.

Wow that tune with Ali Sethi is fantastic! Have not heard a collaboration like it before, only samples.

Pom OTM. I've had a leaked version playing on repeat for the past week. A big leap forward from Psychic although I guess it has been eight years. There's also a noticeably good flow to this album. Top tier for sure.

octobeard, Saturday, 24 July 2021 07:38 (three years ago) link

This is fantastic. I'm absolutely baffled by the "meh" Pitchfork review that seems to think it isn't campy enough and also sounds too much like the first album?

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 20:25 (three years ago) link

Yes, that criticism seems way off. Also found it off to call Psychic a "normie pursuit" and a "dorm-room staple" .

It's def a different kind of beast. Personally prefer Psychic, but that's because it's v different.

Not sure where else to put this, but a couple years ago I went to MONA down in Hobart, Tasmania, one of the more amazing museum experiences I've ever had. Inside we saw an incredible multi-room installation exhibit that was profoundly memorable and impactful called The Divine Comedy. It was actually the work of Alfredo Jaar. Had no idea until recently. Just an incredibly talented family, and I dare say Alredo's got a better flair for the dramatic than Nico! If Australia ever opens their borders back up, it's worth it to check MONA out even just for this exhibit.

I’ve heard good things about that museum and was sad I couldn’t get to Hobart the one time (so far) that I visited Australia. But yeah Alfredo Jaar is pretty renowned artist and is in many collections around the world

Can I have a late pass . Loving the Pakistani vocalist Ali Sethi album Intiha from 2023 where he improvised ghazals over the electronic sounds of Nicolas Jaar.

Like a ballot poll? I feel he's still sort of in the middle of his prime and he's still releasing tunes though

Jaar reworked sounds from his 2020 album Telas for 2023's Initha album with Ali Sethi's vocals. Not sure what else he has recorded lately

A good amount of the live-off-floor-in-studio-with-live-drummer-now-as-official-third-member takes on this Darkside album from last year are among my fave Nico productions I've heard: https://darkside.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-spiral-house

The Roadman Bill Callahan II (Craig D.), Monday, 19 February 2024 15:14 (eight months ago) link

I guess it's 6 years old now, but he produced fka twig's 'Magdalena', which is a modern classic imo. I know lots of people were involved, but in an interview I heard she made it sound like the core team was her, Jaar, and the pianist who's on most tracks (Ethan P Flynn?).

This is pretty damn awesome, at least the musical bits. There's a really good 60 minute album of sick experimental cumbia Nico style here, but the whole thing flows pretty well for such a long play

I'm finding the Piedras material more digestible when broken up like this (I'd already made a playlist of just these tracks, but I guess the ordering is better here, too, or maybe I'm just more receptive to it right now): https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/nicolas-jaar-piedras-1-2/
