ok i'll start:
i need a good hand cream rec - my hands get pretty abused due to my job (they're in water a lot, in rubber gloves a lot, handling fabric a lot - which is surprising abrasive - and handling chemicals a lot).
also: do you get regular manicures? do you give yourself regular manicures? tips? tricks?
― just1n3, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:52 (fourteen years ago) link
I have a $50 gift card to Bliss. Do I buy a giant vat of their best body lotion, or do I get a one-time great mani or pedi?
If the latter, then which?

i don't know bliss, but in my v v limited exp manicures can be had for cheap, and still be good, from many places. body lotion i think is a lot more particular, so maybe that is the better splurge.

i would get my nails done every week if i knew i wouldn't feel wracked with guilt over the cost of it, tho. not even painted or anything - just filed and smoothed and tidied up, since i have the ugliest nails ever and am completely hopeless at maintaining them.
― just1n3, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:55 (fourteen years ago) link
New fabric is awful on hands because it's coated with sizing -- starch or clay that the factory applies to the fabric that makes it stay ironed nice and flat until you buy it and wash that crap out.
I don't have a special hand cream, but I adore Aveeno in any variety. It just has the best all-day staying power without any greasiness. For heavy overnight use, I buy Eucerin.

I tend to agree w you about the -cures, you can get a decent version of either in NYC for a very reasonable price (under $20). I have wondered if I were missing out on something special by getting the cheap kind, though. Does anyone here use a chi-chi salon and want to pull the curtain back for us?

good hand cream
I can't recommend Working Hands highly enough - it is amazing, non-greasy, heals severe chapping and splits almost overnight, no scent at all, and a tub lasts for months.
― Jaq, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 17:21 (fourteen years ago) link
i work with stuff that we make ourselves, so not sure if the fabric has sizing? i don't think so, since i dye it all. but it's really just the fabric itself - folding it etc. just wears away at your skin.
― just1n3, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 17:55 (fourteen years ago) link
Ahh, okay. Used to know someone who worked in a major chain-retailer fabric store, and her hands were always callused and peeling from the dryness.

I like Mavala hand creme, which is hard to find unless you have a mother-in-law who sets you up with tons of it in your stocking every Christmas. You can order if from folica.com, too.
Crabtree and Evelyn make a gardeners' hand scrub and hand cream that are also really good.
Cuticle cream is U&K. Burt's Bees makes a lemon cuticle balm that comes in a little tin. It smells pretty nice.
Pedicures are worth the cash imo because a decent one will look good for at least three weeks. Hands I take care of myself for the most part (if by "take care of" you mean "mostly ignore, sometimes put cream on). I do like nicely polished nails and can do a decent job myself, but rarely bother since I invariably get chips within 2-3 days.
― quincie, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 18:02 (fourteen years ago) link
How topical: my mother sent me an Easter package with a tube of Crabtree & Evenlyn's La Source Hand Therapy cream! The outside says it contains shea butter but they seem to have gotten rid of that faux-chocolatey smell that I hate.
I've been pretty broke lately and not able to replace any personal care items I run out of, so it's extravagant to get this and some Fekkai hair stuff in the mail.

I mean I don't have any foundation. Or lip gloss. Or dinner. But I gots some lavender bath salts, dark dark chocolate truffles, and a 3-pc set of Fekkai "Glossing" products.

REVIVE!Since this very last post(!) I've stopped biting my nails and now they are ferocious talons of gorgeousness.
Problems: I can't get used to how easily I can scratch myselfRaw meat under fingernails EWWW KILL IT WITH FIREObsessively painting and repainting nails because the smallest chip will send me on a biting frenzy
Anyway I would like to post nail pictures and ask what you guys are liking lately! I don't have a picture though.. but right now my nails are blue with two white stripes each, which in a former life was a humble strip of scotch tape that I painted with french manicure polish & sliced into tiny strips. I sealed it all off with a couple coats of topcoat. Yay!

Wait - the stripes are actually pieces of tape or you taped off your nails to paint the stripes?
Mine are a hot pink chipped mess atm but I'm chosing to igmore it and just get them done on Sat. I could do them myself but I like them perfect and they just don't look as good when I do it. I quit smoking again so that's how I'm justifying it. $15 a week on my nails seems fair in comparison to like $70 on smokes.

That's the red lacy design. I was torn between that and the red stripe. This design is maybe too intricate and it gets lost in the shininess of the top coat (you don't have to do a top coat but I figured it couldn't hurt) so I'll try the stripe next.

I've had it done maybe 4 or 5 times over the past two years. I like it a lot in terms of durability and how they look. What sort of bugs me is that it means I can't change the color for 2 weeks. That said, I think they're great for special occasion. I had one done earlier this month before I went away and it lasted 16 days before showing any wear at all but I probably could have left it on for another week if I really wanted to.
I acutally had one done this Wednesday too because the other one had treated me so well. I was going to get a very pale neutral color (because one of the bonus points of the shellac is that you can do nail are on top and remove that without removing the base) but my girl asked if she could do a fun color she liked and I wound up with this:

oh wait - pic in a sec
― (✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 27 July 2012 17:57 (twelve years ago) link
You don't have to pay to get it off. You can just soak in acetone for about 10 mins at home and then scrape it off. I've not had a problem with it being harsh on my nails. They sell at home kits too but they're $$ and I haven't tried any.
Quice - Shellac is the brand name of the CND gel polish line. OPI also has one and another common on you see in salons is called Gelish.

― quincie, Friday, 27 July 2012 18:03 (twelve years ago) link
idk! It was one of the Gelish ones. They have them numbered and pained on nail wheels which is also neat since you can hold it up to your hands and see the colors.
The color is a little off in that pic because of the office lighting but it's actually a really awesome perfect turqoise color. Not something I'd normally wear but I'm glad she convinced be because I like it.
― (✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 27 July 2012 18:04 (twelve years ago) link
Very pretty! Glad they are not quite as hard to remove as I heard. Maybe I'll give it a shot next time I going to vacation.
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 27 July 2012 18:14 (twelve years ago) link
That's what I was thinking - a good pre-vacation option. Gel manicure, leg wax, lash tint and then you can go somewhere warm and get wasted for a week and still look good in your pictures.
FFM, that's a great gradient manicure! Impressive.
― ms. cookie (carl agatha), Friday, 27 July 2012 19:06 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, it's perfect for that.
Is lash tinting legal? My friend is a make-up artist/professional pimple popper and does extensions but it's SO EXPENSIVE. I really want to try it out but it's ridiculous.
― (✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 27 July 2012 19:12 (twelve years ago) link
It's legal to do at salons but I think there's something about buying an at home kit that is more difficult. Didn't Laurel order a lash tint kit and try it at home once?
I think it's $20 where I go (fancy schmancy hair salon). I've done it a couple of times. I didn't like it the first time, but a different person did it the second time and it was much better. Lasts a couple of months and it's really nice in the summer when all my mascara would just run down my face in the hateful humid Chicago heat.
― ms. cookie (carl agatha), Friday, 27 July 2012 19:17 (twelve years ago) link
Just checked - illegal in MA. :( It's a shame too cause I'd definitely do it. My bottom lashes are so blonde they're not visible unless I use mascara which one them which I've been doing all week and loving but it would sure be nice not to have to.
― (✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 27 July 2012 19:22 (twelve years ago) link
Gelish is harder to remove than shellac. They are actually good for your nails because the top coats and what not keep them from peeling/breaking.
Erica I have a tutorial from Tumblr on how to do your own lash extensions... hold on let me find it.

Got the nail art bug bad, going to Ricky's after work for a matte topcoat and some new colors: flat red, flat white, flat blue-green. If it's going to rain all weekend (and it's supposed to) I am going to spend it doing ridiculous things to my nails.

Ricky's, the best beauty supply chain in New York, had only one version of matte topcoat and it was $16 so I didn't buy it. I got a white crackle finish, though, which is...trippy. I put it on alternating nails. You definitely have to apply the same weight of coat to each nail or they craze differently. And don't do it in front of a fan, either, because it makes it go so fast you can't even get it on the nail. Not sure this is my favorite technique, but it definitely is low-stress because the smoothness of the finish doesn't matter, you can just slap it on there.
― purveyor of generations (in orbit), Saturday, 8 September 2012 01:53 (twelve years ago) link
I miss Ricky's! I used to go to the one on Broadway near where Antique Boutique and the old Tower Records used to be all the time. I think that's where it was at least. Sad about the matte topcoat. Maybe order online?

If you put a thick gloss coat on top of the base color before you add the crackle, you get a nice depth effect with some separation between the layers. Subtle, but I like it.

Okay, now the right hand. I want to do a three-color job like this:
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zibuiozm95c/T4hf03QB4VI/AAAAAAAAE2U/rQ4PnOwE-Ds/s1600/color+block+mani+with+holland+collection.jpg
(From lucysstash.com, a great polish and nail art blog.)
The first base color I tried is a cheap mini yellow I bought yesterday. It might be good for art elements, but as a basecoat the coverage sucks. Tried up to 3 coats then took it all off because it was still streaky and uneven.
Second attempt: Used Princess Sabra as the basecoat. Tried to freehand the first swipe, using Essie "Blanc." Remind me never to play Operation. A mess. Took it off again.
Third attempt: Princess Sabra as the base, going to dry thoroughly and then use Scotch tape to form the swipes, instead. Updates as events warrant.

― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 10 September 2012 22:44 (twelve years ago) link
i guess i could it up on the internet
Paint black. Either wait half a day for it to be really, REALLY dry, or use a quick-dry topcoat and wait like an hour at least.
Then apply normal Scotch tape leaving the tips free. Dab with white polish, not too thin or too thick (this is where I need practice). Pull off tape as soon as you're done with the painting; if you let the polish dry with the tape, it'll chip when you lift it up. So you only get once chance to get the tips right. Once tips are done, let dry and seal with topcoat.

I have straight-across nails but if yours curve more, Erica has suggested those large hole reinforcing grommet sticky things, from stationary stores. You can use those for half-moon manicures too, just put the sticker at the base of the nail instead of the tip.

Laurel - I'm so glad you like it! I really think it's just the best grey I've found. Speaking of grey, I got a Shellac mani last Saturday and here it is just now. This is therefore day 5 and it still looks totally brand new:

You can't tell the color because I can't get it in good lighting but it's a very light grey that I like a lot (tho obv not as much as Berlin There Done That). Got Shellac because I'm goign away for 5 days starting tomorrow and it's longevity is good for trips. I heard that you can paint and do nail art on top of Shellac so when I get bakc next week I'm going to try to do BTDT tips. I think the grey on grey might be pretty neat.

Crackle coats are cool, and you don't have to worry about the surface quality! You can put a nice gloss topcoat over them to bump up the shine & make it look a little less chalky/more professional.
Right after I said I would go bare nails, I scrabbled them across a hardcover book and broke one. Crazy-glued back together and buffed it down but I can't expose the broken part now. O well.

Yeah looking at it I think it's free-hand! I thought stencils, because the hard part is getting the ends of the narrow lines squared off, but the letter shapes are SLIGHTLY too irregular to be stencils. Like the A. Being freehand painting makes it even cooler!
― purveyor of generations (in orbit), Friday, 5 October 2012 15:52 (twelve years ago) link
It's pretty masterful! A stencil is not a bad idea though - an exacto knife and masking or painter's tape could get that job done, I bet!

hey do you want to hear something freaky?I noticed around February this year that one of my big toenails had just stopped growing. It was actually a little worrying. The polish would start to grow out on all my other toes except that one. About a month ago it started growing back again, like a new nail under the old one. It takes ages though. My mate who had a baby noticed that the pedicure she got about the time she found out she was pregnant still hadn't completely grown out after she'd had the baby :/

Heh the bow is the scarf from a 1940s persian lamb ladies' coat that died a long time ago, but this grey silk with orange pagodas on it was the lining fabric and I kept the neck tie. It's the perfect shape to make those Victorian heiress-style draping bows.

Did you use the dotting tool or whatever its called?
I'm in the midst of attempting that black matte/shiny French manicure. It's going about as expected.
― carl agatha, Friday, 19 October 2012 15:36 (twelve years ago) link
I did use a dotting tool set!! But none of them are big enough for big dots, so I tried using a q-tip but it makes them too uneven because the cotton gets heavy with polish and distorts out of round. I need to think of something about the size of a pencil eraser that applies perfectly evenly.
― purveyor of generations (in orbit), Friday, 19 October 2012 16:24 (twelve years ago) link
carl, may I absolutely strongly suggest using scotch tape before you paint the gloss tips? I've tried that thing twice and removed and given up both times because freehanding the gloss part, even with a flat-tip brush from my new set, did not work at all.
― purveyor of generations (in orbit), Friday, 19 October 2012 16:25 (twelve years ago) link
IO - what about actually whittling a pencil eraser slightly to make it a bit smaller? Might be hard to make a smooth circle, but maybe not!
I have seen mechanical pencils as a suggestion for extremely small dots as well.
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 19 October 2012 16:29 (twelve years ago) link
Maybe smaller than an eraser, but at least a 10pt dot.
The dotting tool set comes with LOTS OF REALLY SMALL TIPS but not much selection of big ones! It's annoying tbh.
― purveyor of generations (in orbit), Friday, 19 October 2012 16:29 (twelve years ago) link
I think the reason the tools don't come larger is that the polish doesn't go on flat, it goes on in a...dome. The middle of the drop is always higher. And the bigger the dot, the bigger the height of the middle. So at some size you get domes that just don't make sense on a nail.
An eraser is the right idea, but not...spongy enough? Needs to make contact evenly over the curve of the nail.
― purveyor of generations (in orbit), Friday, 19 October 2012 16:37 (twelve years ago) link
orbit, what about those eyeliners that comes with a sponge smudger on one end? -- those can be pretty spongy, you might find one that would work as a tool. Maybelline has one that's p cheap
also if you do find a pencil eraser soft enough, you can make it smaller by putting that end in a pencil sharpener. I used to do it all the time in high school when my erasers got pen ink on them.
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 19 October 2012 18:19 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah but can I get the polish off the end of an eraser with acetone? It has to be cleanable, too. Actually the make-up applicator is a good idea.
My nail art brushes, I tried them. My hands are NOT steady enough for this shit, I have to say. Such sad and terrible results. BUT ALSO of course acetone takes the paint right off the handles, which means no sticking them INTO the bottles, I have to pour out the polish onto a bit of paper or something! Seems wasteful. Have not quite worked this all out yet.
― purveyor of generations (in orbit), Friday, 19 October 2012 18:22 (twelve years ago) link
you might need a paint pallette, the hardened plastic kind with the little dips for paint
and maybe an art supply store would have small spongetip brushes of diff sizes that are relatively inexpenive.
but you're right, def test the polish/acetone on the sponge first. the latex might break down, I'm not sure tho.
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 19 October 2012 18:27 (twelve years ago) link
a pallette like this http://superbeautyguru.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Nail-Polish-Palette.jpg
maybe an eyedropper would help get the polish in and out of the pallette too?
sorry this is making it sound way crazier, I'm just addicted to "tools" lol
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 19 October 2012 18:29 (twelve years ago) link
I love having the right tool for the job, too! The problem is that polishes are made to dry pretty quickly, which is an asset when they're in the bottle but not when you take them out in the air.

― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 19 October 2012 18:37 (twelve years ago) link
another though, re the shaky hand: have you thought about using a magnifier? one of the things I remember from a long long ago art class was that the best way to make small detail work easier and less shaky was to make it bigger.
also take a deep breath before make the stroke/mark/whatever, like when you take a photo, shoot a gun etc. it can help steady yr hand.
I will ponder this pallette thing some more though. there's gotta be a way to do it.
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 19 October 2012 18:39 (twelve years ago) link

I will give full details on THE BLOG but I ended up using scotch tape on my left hand, so painting with my right, and freehanding the right hand, painting with my left and the right hand came out much better. The trick, it seems, is to hold the brush still with my left hand and manipulate with my right hand.
Anyway, it came out mostly crap but for specific, fixable reasons and there's enough potential that I might try it again.

Loving your nails, in orbit!
La Lechera, had that same experience with glittery red polish and it was indeed 12 years ago. I was just thinking of that the other day too, how there was a period of time I always wore glitter polish of some sort. I was also doing a lot of clubbing.
Happy Birthday, Finefinemusic!!!
Happy Birthday, Carl Agatha!

Thanks ladies, and happy birthday to YOU, Carl! I mixed some yellow & orange polish and layered a few blue & silver sparkles on top. Not quite what I was hoping for but a suitable solution. I'll get a picture up when lighting is more ideal.

Everyone otm, this shit has to soak in basically liquid acetone to come off. I'll worry about that in a few days when I'm ready to do something else. (Aka kicking the can down the road, eh?)

The last time I took srs glitter polish off, I soaked cotton balls in remover, wrapped them around my names, then wrapped aluminum foil around my finger tips and hung out for five or ten minutes. Worked! Maybe somebody here told me to do that.
― carl agatha, Saturday, 17 November 2012 13:17 (twelve years ago) link
^thats how I do it too. I just tear the cotton balls up so I have ten little pieces from two cotton balls.

Got my first gel manicure! My nails were looking rrrrrough and I had zero time at home to do anything about them and a half hour tops for lunch so an instant dry manicure at a no nonsense nail salon seemed like the solution.
It's amazing how fast it dries. I started to hand my wallet to the manicurist so she could pull my credit card out and she's like, "They're dry. You can get it yourself." Duh. The polish looks kind of thick, honestly, and it wasn't a very good manicure in general, but I'm definitely into the quick drying and promised longevity. I'll definitely go to my preferred salon and try it there.
― carl agatha, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 21:22 (twelve years ago) link
I love the idea. Lauren is rly into gel manis, too. I think I would want a simple design, maybe with contrast half-moons or sthing just so I didn't get bored with it over the 3-week lifespan, but it's tempting. How has it held up?
Tried to do a matte vs glitter mani last night but hell if the matte topcoat isn't slower than Seche Vite and I didn't have time at night for all the layers to dry properly. Must do tape-job on 2nd day if it's late in the evening. So I just put gloss over it to hide the mess.

xp It still hasn't chipped at the ends of my nails, but it's looking bad down towards the cuticles (one reason why this wasn't a good manicure: she painted my cuticles as well as my nails, so there are some issues down there as my nails grow out). Turns out the worst part is that I really want to take the polish off but I can't because it's no chip and I don't have acetone and time to sit around with foil on my fingers and the fortitude to scrape off the softened polish and I don't know when I'm going to get to a nail place this weekend.

I miss biting for the simple fact that I hate filing my nails, heh. I keep them long because I hate trying to file them. I should quit being a cheap ass and just get them professionally done on my lunch once a month and paint in between.
Lately, I've been having a stressful, busy time at work and taking the time at nights once in a while to paint my nails has been very soothing & centering. Put on some music, paint & decompress.

Yeah, but my goal is for it to be indistinguishable from a professional job. A regular manicure is around $15 in these parts, but an art one starts at $40 and goes to like $100 and up at a place that specializes. I'll never do the designs that are actually free-hand representational sketching, because I'm awful at that, but I should be able to get the geometric designs as well as anywhere once I work out how best to peel the tape off, how thick to make each color, how to find the center, what looks best, which polishes interact funny.

I like that purple.
I bought some Seche Vite topcoat at in orbit's recommendation and I like it a lot better than the Sally Hansen combo base and topcoat I was using. It's shiny, it evens out the boundaries between different polish colors (I did black nails with sparkly red tips for NYE. And today since I haven't gotten around to taking it off yet) and my nails still look good today.
I'm thinking about buying an Esse base coat that was highly rated on MUA. We'll see if Target has it.
― carl agatha, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 18:51 (twelve years ago) link
That was the royal "we." I'm going to Target with Old Bess.
I left my beloved Seche Vite behind so used an Essie fast-dry top coat for the manis I did on holiday but SV is a secret weapon in the war against imperfect paint jobs.

I'm glad it worked for you, carl.
― grossly incorrect register (in orbit), Wednesday, 2 January 2013 18:58 (twelve years ago) link
If I don't wash a sinkful of dishes or put my hands in sand or corn meal or scrape at things with my nails, Seche Vite manicures usually last around 3 days in perfect-or-really-good shape and addl days with just a little wear. Also when it starts to chip it tends to come off in rly big pieces bc the top coat holds it together.
If I love a mani and don't have time to re-do, I spot-fix with the base color and then put another layer of SV over the fix to even out the lines, like carl said.
― grossly incorrect register (in orbit), Wednesday, 2 January 2013 19:30 (twelve years ago) link

yupalso when a nail got ruined like that, i just removed the fancy polish and then painted it black until i only had pinkies left with the fancy design (because who uses pinkies to actually do anything?) is that gauche? i thought it looked alright.

I just attempted my first fancy paint job and I have two things: * electrical tape works just as well as masking tape* making triangles look even and consistent is not as easy as it looks.
I got better toward the end of the 2nd hand but yikes, there's some mess in there.
Still, not as difficult as I expected, which is good for a first try. But there's no chance I'm going to get good at this, that's for sure.

Funny, I did chevrons last night! I was lazy & didn't want to wait for the base layer to dry enough for tape, so I free handed it. Turned out well but a little shaky. Annoyingly, I bought myself a beautiful blue Essie polish & that's what I used for a second layer.. what watery, lumpy crap! Just smeared a bit when I put too coat on too, 12 hours later.. sticking to cheap Sally Hansen bottles from now on.

I think LL is onto something about winter being nail time--in summer they're wet and in the sun and sand all the time (well, mine are) and a mani would be p much toast. And you get to have a visible body in the summer and wear light clothes, so there are other ways to feel luxurious and do something for your senses. Winter is a time that needs more color and calls for a little more formality and a harder outer shell to go with fighting the elements. We'll see how long I stay obsessed.

You want to hear a very cute story about nails that maybe made me tear up a little? I went to my nail lady for Shellac not last Friday but the one before that and we wound up talking and I told her what's going on in my life. By the time I'd left she said that for the foreseeable future until I adjust to being on one income etc. she's only going to charge me her Groupon price (which is $15 < than the normal price) because she wants me to keep coming and knows how good having nice nails can make you feel. It was so damn sweet.

Aw, that makes me happy! It's nice to know that people are so kind, and that someone is caring for you in that way (and having nice nails do make you feel better imo).

OPI and Butter have both gone up in price. I haven't noticed if any other brands have.

My local beauty supply store has stripers in a world of colors for $1.99 each, and a bunch of cheap brands of polish that I don't know anything about for like $5 or something, so I hadn't even noticed!

I've ordered the bulk of my nail stuff from amazon.com at discounted prices from beauty supply stores.
― lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Saturday, 2 March 2013 16:25 (eleven years ago) link
Ya, it'd be difficult for me to pay retail after seeing that both of those products can be gotten for like $5/ea on Amazon (though shipping ain't free)
― ferreira rocher (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 2 March 2013 16:31 (eleven years ago) link
What I do is usually make a list of the colors or things I want and then see how many of them I can get from the same 1 or 2 beauty supply companies. Usually I can group things together. Doesn't have the instant gratification of retail purchase but then again retail means taking a $2.25 subway ride each way so it probably evens out.

I've been playing with neon-colored matte polishes and these striper brushes in black and silver, it's definitely very compelling, but I miss the graphic simplicity of the geometric paint jobs.

Another nail fad I saw mentioned somewhere is turquoise nails, like marbled to look like the stone. It seems to involve a water marble that you spray with hand disinfecting spray, which breaks the surface tension and opens up a bunch of holes.

I tried the galaxy nails and they didn't go quite to plan, mainly because sponging on the (green, pink and purple/blue) coloured polish didn't get much colour on there (also seemed to lift off the underlying colour in one spot? I blame the base coat). Also I was too cheap to find that glitter polish so I used this cool silvery one and smudged it which made a layer of lots of tiny glitters more like spray paint. So it kind of looks like spray-painted shiny motor oil or something but it's ok. Can't get a v good pic.

Actually I'm kind of idly musing whether there's a pattern I'd like to make "mine" in a trademark way, or a style that isn't already common that I feel rly works for me. If I'm going to do these more, do I want to keep returning to something recognizable of my own instead of just copying other people's work that interests me? Etc.

for some reason my toenails react more to dark nailpolish than my fingernails
almost said "hand nails". i need coffee
Tried out a birthday present today, this "leather-look finish" from Nails, Inc. Mixed it with a yellow I just bought for $1.99 that turned out not to be opaque after all--this is four coats!--but I might be coming around on the "rubber tubing" color & translucence.

I love the subway ones!! I like the bridge too but it didn't come out quite as well as my sketch, because nails are irregular and don't line up exactly. It needs some work on perspective & alignment, but it's most of the way there, I agree (and am secretly still proud of it).

Maybe you could paint designs on press-on nails and sell them on Etsy.
― Lawyer... SUAVE... (carl agatha), Thursday, 8 August 2013 16:13 (eleven years ago) link
elmo also suggested that, I should see how to even obtain the blank nail sets maybe. I'd rather work face-to-face but the nail set option does seem v plausible.
― Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Thursday, 8 August 2013 16:14 (eleven years ago) link
I don't have experience as an etsy seller, but as online retail guy i have to say it sounds like it might be a good way to extend your exposure. shipping by first class parcel service is pretty dependable and cheap. you can sell sets that you have pre-made AND / OR you can make custom sets to order. i'm sure you'd be able to find blank nail sets at your local beauty supply!
― ⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 8 August 2013 16:27 (eleven years ago) link
obviously sticking on some acrylic nails isn't the same experience as a manicure, so you'd have to price accordingly. on the plus side, tho -- you'd get a chance to practice and try out new designs without needing a human subject AND you can build inventory at the same time. there might even be an opportunity to have them to upsell your clients ~during~ in-person sessions. if nothing else, it might help you support your habit.
― ⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 8 August 2013 16:31 (eleven years ago) link

― old homophobic boom bap rap traditionalist (The Reverend), Monday, 21 October 2013 00:59 (eleven years ago) link
It's a clear layer that helps absorb scratches and chips. And can be shiny or matte.

http://jezebel.com/5838802/how-to-make-a-manicure-last
The best tip there, imo, is to use nail polish remover to clean your nails before you start (even if you don't already have polish on them). That gets any oil off your nail and makes the polish adhere better.

Oh and I have been meaning to ask about your base coat preferences. I have this big old bottle of CND Stickey, but I think I like Orly Bonder better, maybe? Actually I have yet to figure out how to get more than two days without chips.
How in the heck are you doing this stuff with your non-dominant hand, is the other thing I would like to know!
― quincie, Sunday, 27 October 2013 01:14 (eleven years ago) link
The circuits would have been a lot straighter if I'd done them w my dominant hand! There's no way around the non-dom side, it's just a pain. I knew my left hand couldn't do the delicacy of the curved spider webs so even though the webs look simpler than the robots, straight lines are easier for me.
My current base coat is a bottle of China Glaze Strong Adhesion Base Coat and it works fine afaict. I started using a Zoya one and some Zoya colors and their quick-dry drops, but it confirmed my theory that 3-free formulas don't work well with non-3-free formulas--the drops caused terrible shrinkage, even worse than Seche Vite.

― Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Friday, 15 November 2013 12:21 (eleven years ago) link

oval i guess, but i see mostly squares on students
― sweat pea (La Lechera), Friday, 15 November 2013 14:49 (eleven years ago) link
(note: this is not a product i would buy, so my preference doesn't really matter -- the people who i know who have acrylic nails mostly have square)

oval oval oval; I dislike square unless they are quite short (like short natural nails)

oh but LL has a good point in that square seem to be more popular, so maybe square!

― carl agatha, Friday, 15 November 2013 17:07 (eleven years ago) link

I'm looking at both "medium" (which to me are long nails) and "active length" which are only slightly longer than my natural ones, both in oval shapes. I think the preference for v square tips or not is a class-related issue that I'm not sure I can unpack adequately, but my overall impression is that in the modern nail art world, oval is currently winning unless they're, as you say, quite short.

― quincie, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 15:35 (eleven years ago) link
The friends I have in mind who did purchase nails either are into heavy-metal, or really girly. So I would suggest maybe something studded, black, etc.
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 20:05 (eleven years ago) link
And maybe also throw up a picture of blank nails and offer custom designs for an extra five dollars? As in, tell people to email you a picture or description of what they're looking for
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 20:07 (eleven years ago) link
Thanks! I'm doing a baby blue leopard + glitter set right now for the girly, will throw in something pink after that. I have some basic metal gems on hand but a better set coming in the mail sometime in December (ugh shipping from China), but I'll do some matte black with metallic details soon!
The item description does mention custom work but you're right that I should create a new item for it with a good work-in-progress photo. Good idea!
― Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 20:11 (eleven years ago) link
I'm also not 100% sure how to package these although I'm seeing some cardstock printed with my upcoming logo and some double-sided tape to hold them in place, then that in a plastic bag in case any come loose, and then that in a padded envelope. Do you think that's enough padding in case they put the package through a sorting machine? The nails are pretty thin but maybe could crack if they were really flattened?
― Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 20:14 (eleven years ago) link
Like, for instance, I can get 1000 ct of 4 x 6" recloseable baggies for 5 bucks, lightly stick the nails on a piece of preprinted card topped w the LN logo, and then seal into the bag. Step 4: PROFIT!! I hope.

Thanks to Julep's online Black Friday sale, I got 7 bottles of their polish, which is normally $14 per bottle, for a grand total of 22 bucks. This is AMAZING and I am rich in outrageously colored nail potential, but holding their little tubes has also alerted me to the fact that their bottles only hold HALF AS MUCH as the non-indie brands like China Glaze, OPI, Essie, etc. So really they're TWENTY EIGHT DOLLARS FOR HALF AN ONCE. That's crazy.
― Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Wednesday, 11 December 2013 03:00 (eleven years ago) link

― we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Tuesday, 18 February 2014 20:00 (eleven years ago) link
Me too! That brush-stroke thinning effect that trails off at the end is one of my favorite techniques, even though those are kinda faked because my brush is now so thin it took like three strokes to build those up. :)
There are nail artists who use tiny tiny pens and who can cut the tips down even more to get inconceivably thin, straight lines, but since I only use a brush I try to capitalize on the specific effect.

oh hi nail ladies I have a question
I got a very basic no-frills manicure for my bro's wedding while I was in oz. I don't know what kind of polish they used, but they did like 3 coats, it's v thick and shiny. they're not gels or anything, I think it might be shellac? but I'm not sure.
anyway, now they're starting to crack a bit and growing away and I want to remove it because they are looking kinda busted now.I tried soaking in acetone last night but I sat there for 15 minutes and it didn't budge at all.
do I need to go to a salon to get it removed? what is my best play?
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 18 February 2014 23:55 (eleven years ago) link
Acetone-soaked cotton balls applied to each nail and held in place with aluminum foil is what the nail folks on MUA always say. Are you sure your polish remover is 100% acetone? It may be weaker sauce.

Shellac is a trade name, I think it's a CND product? Basically I think it is a gel manicure even though they say it's a unique process (probably so they could trademark it or w/e).
Oh yeah: http://www.komonews.com/news/consumer/122994693.html
You'll need actual acetone, like quincie said, and some soaking.
― Orson Wellies (in orbit), Wednesday, 19 February 2014 04:26 (eleven years ago) link
You might want to gob a lot of lotion on your fingers first, because that acetone will straight dry out your cuticles.
― Orson Wellies (in orbit), Wednesday, 19 February 2014 04:28 (eleven years ago) link
yeah p sure this was a knock-off version of shellac
good to know, thxorbit!!
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 19 February 2014 04:31 (eleven years ago) link
Orbit OTM. Out of all the gel polishes Shellac is definitely the easiest to remove and it doesn't damage nails at all. Some of the others (particularly Gelish brand) are really fucking awful to get off and require a lot more soaking and scraping. I try to avoid those and only get Shellac and one other kind but I can't remember it's name now. If you leave the cotton balls tin foil wraps on for enough time you should be able to gently push the polish off with an orange stick but if it's Gelish or similar you might have to scrape hard. :(

Been getting back into painting my own nails again. I just painted them hot pink (Wet n Wild Wildshine Lavender Crème, which is not lavender in the least) and used some old black and white striped nail stickers of an "accent nail" despite having misgivings about whether that's still a thing (I saw a grocery cashier and a random woman on the bus with accent nails recently and decided that was good enough for me) and it's kind of silly but I'm still enjoying it.
― from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Thursday, 21 May 2015 15:52 (nine years ago) link
The striped accent nail is silly. The pink nails are great.
I tried it previously with this really pretty sparkly red (Star Spangled by Orly) on all my nails but used a shiny top coat on the ring fingers and a matte topcoat on the rest. They both looked good just because the polish is so pretty but there wasn't enough of a contrast between the shiny and the matte to really make it noticeable.
― from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Thursday, 21 May 2015 15:54 (nine years ago) link
I'm really into the Sally Hansen miracle gel nail polish! Decent colors, dries insanely quickly and lasts a lot longer than regular polish. No lights needed to cure it!

― just1n3, Thursday, 21 May 2015 16:01 (nine years ago) link

― from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Thursday, 21 May 2015 16:04 (nine years ago) link
Just regular remover. Even my acetone-free remover gets it off. It might take a little longer if the color is dark.
― just1n3, Thursday, 21 May 2015 16:47 (nine years ago) link
I think you're supposed to go outside and let the sun cure it too but I usually paint my nails at night so I don't bother. My job is hard on my hands and I can get at least a couple days in before I start getting minor chips.

Gather round let me tell you my tale of woe...
I decided to treat myself to some indie nailpolish and bought three colors from Super Black Laquers - The Bends, Switch, and Spanked. GIS for Super Black the Bends and you can see how amazing that looks. THEORETICALLY. It is possible jelly nail polish is just too advanced for me right now, but my nails looked like junky, uneven, streaky shit after three coats of that stuff.
So I took it off and tried Switch, which is cool but really not for me. It's kind of a greenish black, which doesn't work on me in the least, and I was unimpressed by the holo effect.
I'm going to set The Bends aside and try it again some other time when I'm done being angry at it but I will never like Switch. LET MY MISTAKE BE YOUR WINDFALL. I will send Switch to anyone who wants it. If you want to trade something, that's fine, but I mostly don't want it to go to waste nor do I want it taking up precious space in my nail polish box. LET ME KNOW.

ugh that's disappointing - i thought her stuff would be really good!
ytth bought me a couple of nars nail polishes - i haven't tried the metallic purple yet, but the forest green was a lame, flat black with greenish cast like yours, and was not impressive at all. looked really cheap.
― just1n3, Tuesday, 9 June 2015 18:51 (nine years ago) link
Yeah I wanted to like it so bad. I remain hopeful that The Bends and I can reach an agreement. I can't bring myself to try Spanked yet because if I don't like that, I will be too sad. Also I've painted my nails three times in two days, which is ridic and my cuticles are paying the price.
― from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Tuesday, 9 June 2015 18:52 (nine years ago) link
And I don't mean to be like "This is fugly. Who wants it?" I really think switch would work well for the right person.

OKAY I have unlocked the secrets of jelly glitter nail polish and conquered The Bends. After way too much time watching videos about how to paint my god damn nails, I decided to try two techniques: 1) use a complimentary color as a base coat and then use the "dabbing" method to apply the glitter and 2) put that shit on with a motherfucking cosmetic sponge.
The first method got way too goopy way too fast, wouldn't try, still looked like streaky shit, so I took it off. Rot in hell, first method.
The second method was successful. I started with a regular old clear base coat (this is pretty stainy stuff) and then did two coats of the glitter polish with a cosmetic sponge (well, a lot of cosmetic sponges). This put a lot of glitter on my nails without making a gross thick layer of polish. Then I went back with the brush and the dabbing method to fill in any bald spots and to deepen the overall color, which was key for getting that cool underwater look of this polish. Then I slopped on some Seche Vite top coat. Apparently somebody makes a top coat specifically for glitter polish but one nail polish vlogger who is practically my sister now because I have watched so many of her videos, said that gloopy Seche Vite works just as well. My particular bottle is old as fuck and it did a pretty good job smoothing everything out.
Big cons to this though, specifically - I used up a full quarter of this $12 bottle of nail polish and like my grandmother says, "I don't have money just falling out of my asshole." But the bright side is that it won't take long to use up this whole bottle and then I get get on with my god damn life and stop trying to replicate the nail polish techniques of people who take instagram pictures of their fingernails for a living. The other, bigger con is that it is so fucking messy baby jesus h. christ. This is why my best friends the nail bloggers put liquid latex around their nails before they use any sponge methods, but since I am a boring middle age midwestern mom I do not have liquid latex for nail art or sex dungeon purposes so I was like eh fuck it I have acetone and a paint brush how hard can it be to clean this up. REALLY HARD. REALLY GOD DAMN HARD. As in hopefully when I next shower I'll be able to get the rest of the glitter off my fingers because otherwise, I'm going to die as I lived: with blue-green stained glitter fingers.

ditto that! Any chance for pix? Or pix of what you were going for?
Also by cosmetic sponge I am assuming you mean the foam kind and not the cotton-pad kind?
Liquid latex, dear god!

Looks cool, yeah? Like underwater. Love it.

So here's what I managed to do to myself, and this is after round one clean up attempts with a q-tip and brush and orange stick:

omg whoa -- welcome to the latest beauty trend that is impossible to achieve, good lordi hope you manage to get it off without too much effort or chemical burns!
i got my first mani in years while waiting around for several hours in a city i'd never been to and i got manicured 1) by a man 2) who invented this cool exhaust system to get the fumes out of the small storefronthe was really nice! we talked about esl classes and vietnamese food (he's vietnamese)

HOLY SHIT that polish looks impossible to manage for pros, nevermind mere mortals. Super awesome, though! I love regular (non-glitter) jellies and have quite a few that are easy enough to work with, but that huge glitter is far too intimidating for me (to apply, not to wear).
― mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Monday, 15 June 2015 20:11 (nine years ago) link
yeah - applying each piece of glitter w tweezers sounds more appealing, jeez louise

Some people do that at the end! To make sure everything is perfect. I DO NOT CARE. I just want nails that look like they are underwater. I just want mermaid nails, OKAY???
― from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Monday, 15 June 2015 20:57 (nine years ago) link
I think this is a perfectly reasonable desire tbh.

I dunno, I've been waiting since the days of Sea Wees in the bathtub for my luxurious mermaid hair and I still don't have it!

Sea Wees!!!
I bought some Deborah Lippmann polish because it was mermaid themed.

For regular glitter polish removal, I recommend putting a cotton ball soaked in polish remover on your finger, wrapping it with foil, and waiting 10+ minutes.
― tokyo rosemary, Tuesday, 16 June 2015 03:05 (nine years ago) link
I don't love gel polishes and usually put a base color underneath so the gel color doesn't have to be evenly applied. Then I kind of push the glitter blobs around with the end of the brush, maybe even using an orange stick or toothpicks to distribute it around. Then a small flat brush cleans up the gel from the edges but hopefully there won't be as much glitter flakes scattered around.

I had no luck with that, but I don't have the same expertise and experience you have.
I'm happy to say that all the glitter on my fingers wore off over the course of the day. I did a little shower cleanup this morning and slapped another coat of Seche Vite on my nails on a hunch and while they definitely don't look nail blogger perfect, they are just fine for every day wear and have enough of the cool underwater look to make me happy.
I would say I'll never do it again buuuuuut I probably will.

omg you guys guess what
I bought some of that liquid latex stuff. Just a little tube of it from "Mini Mani Moo" because even though the large tub of sex dungeon liquid latex is way more cost effective, I have no idea if I'll use it enough. I just wanted to try it out. Anywayyyyyyyy so emboldened, I actually did a gradient with a sponge and it looks pretty good. Far far from perfect, but I'm reasonably happy with it for my first attempt. I did a white to lavender gradient and then went over it with green glitter top coat to camouflage all of my mistakes. I won't be giving io any competition but as a hobby, it is fun.
Also these are beautiful and I wish I had the time for such an endeavor: http://www.thenailpolishchallenge.com/2015/06/mermaid-scale-nail-art-whats-up-nails.html

QUESTIONS:
1. Is Seche Vite still everyone's fav topcoat?2. Is a base coat necessary, and if so, does it matter which one?3. How much does polish really vary btwn brands? I'm looking at two v similar charcoals from CND and China Glaze but have never used either!
― the masseduction of lauryn hill (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 7 August 2018 13:58 (six years ago) link
I think a good base coat is necessary- I started painting my nails again in March, once a week, but I wasn’t using a base coat and now my nails are fucked, peeling and cracking and weak af. So I’d suggest a strengthening base coat
I just use sally hansen quick dry top coat
Differences btw polish brands can be things like how long it lasts without chipping, how easy it is to apply, color quality. But there can be differences within a brand’s line as well, like maybe their regular colors are long lasting but their metallics are shit, for example

Try searching YouTube for the polishes you’re interested in to find reviews

Stevie! I have answers!
1. Yes but I also like Sally Hansen's Hard As Nails. Neither one is particularly expensive iirc which makes it mystifying that salons don't use either, and instead my top coat from the salon is never deep or shiny enough.2. Yes; idk probably not. It's not going to make your nails stronger or whatever some of them promise, but it will keep dark pigments from staining your nail surface and it probably does make the polish stick better.3. I care about color options and brush quality more than which brand of polish. Essie brushes, for instance, are small and relatively firm, whereas Julep brushes are big and fluffy and I find them inexact though they do deliver more polish to the nail at one time. But China Glaze was one of my fave brands for color choices. I never had any CND--I think they're more in the gel market?

Very late but the topcoat I can’t do without is called Poshe and it knocks Seche Vite into a cocked hat. The base coat is great too.
― gyac, Saturday, 26 January 2019 10:58 (six years ago) link
I've used both in the past and don't remember there being much a difference to me. What do you like better about the Poshe?
― mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Saturday, 26 January 2019 12:41 (six years ago) link
For a minute I was into Sally Hansen Insta Dri but it goes to stringy crap pretty fast and doesn't take well to thinning.
I like the texture better, it’s a lot less thick than Seche Vite imo and it dries faster and stays around longer. It might be though that I had heard such great things about Seche Vite and was disappointed, whereas I got Poshe after reading about it on some random blog somewhere and was really impressed.

Also, regarding different formulas. Chanel is a favourite of mine but the formula is notoriously lacking. Recently tried a new shade in the new formula and it’s definitely improved but ...this is why I always have a good bit of topcoat on.
I really like Starrily a lot these days but it’s not that easy to get.
― gyac, Saturday, 26 January 2019 13:01 (six years ago) link
OK I'm getting the CND Stickey base coat which everyone seems to be in general consensus about.I was about to reach for a new bottle of Seche Vite but am reading that it gets gloppy in like 6 months and honestly I don't paint my nails enough. Do all top coats get gloppy in like 6 months???
― vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 18 February 2019 17:04 (six years ago) link
also there is one vote each for Sally Hansen Insta-Dry, Sally Hansen Hard as Nails, Sally Hansen Diamond Strength, and Poshe and I have no idea what to pick! My goal is chip-free longevity above all else, like shine is great too but it's not my tip top priority
― vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 18 February 2019 17:08 (six years ago) link
You can thin out the Seche Vite with SV Restore, come visit me and I will thin everything you could ever want because I have a big ass bottle that I will never finish before I die.
The Restore works to thin all polishes, not just SV. Don't try to thin with polish remover, that ain't no good.
Hard as Nails and Diamond Strength are not quick dry, I don't think. Which makes them a no-go for me.

so wait why are some top coats fast dry and some not? What is the advantage of a non-fast-dry one if fast-dry ones seem to protect your nails just as well?
― vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 19 February 2019 14:03 (six years ago) link
still don't understand why Sally Hansen makes 15 different top coats when they are all basically designed to make your nails shiny and long-lasting
