53 SPOON - "Inside Out" [272 points, 9 votes, 1 first place vote]
this sounds like what would happen if you nabbed julian lennon out of the late 80s and locked him in a room with that owl city song playing over and over again until he lost his mind and then forced him to only use drum loops from the first version of GarageBand and recorded it on a tascam four track with the bass shelved out. 5/10

77 NICKI MINAJ "Lookin Ass"
wow she really really likes that word a lot. is the vocal sample her recordings of kanye locked in a well in her basement? this is super fucking stupid. there are moments where you get glimpses of her skill still but fuck off man dumb cartoon bullshit echhh. glad its short at least. 3/10

76 OWEN PALLETT "Song for Five & Six”
ignoring for a second local man wins prize and my general deep respect for what he does and trying to listen to this with unencumbered ears - dig the music, wish the vocals felt more a part of the song in some way, they're living in some alternate room of reverb or something and that always weirds me out. its a tricky song to listen to in a good way, ill be suprised if anything else in the countdown hits my rhythm complexity buttons quite so hard but something just doesnt quite click for me? 7/10

75 TUNE-YARDS "Water Fountain"
FULL DISCLOSURE I VOTED FOR THIS although almost as a placeholder for thinking theres something going on with her that is still kind of revealing itself. its unapologetic and weird and difficult in a way that i didnt hear a lot of this year, the song just keeps breaking apart the longer you listen and then somehow reassembles itself in the last minute. im down.

77. Jazmine Sullivan - Mascara
This is pretty good! I don't think that's ever been my reaction any other year to the first track so hopefully not a jinx, only criticism is some clunk lyrics wise and the potential for getting a little audio wallpapery, doesnt so much end as just drift off somewhere, still 7/10

This sounds exactly like "Radiohead writes a song for a James Bond film" which is somehow super super gross to me, not in a "oh how could they" way but in the terrible combination of the worst of both of those two things. 75 THUNDERCAT FT. FLYING LOTUS AND KAMASI WASHINGTON "Them Changes"
I think I can't be impartial about this because i bear the deep scars of guitar store lifetime but the noodly watery envelope filter bass shit in this is so fucking grating and unlistenable that i cant give it a fair shake. shades of shrapnel records if they had put out anything not made by the whitest people available in new jersey. i get grabbed for moments, theres hooks but then saxophone or "blurgle bluggle wuuba wubba squee squa" bubbles up again and i just cant fucking take that shit. still better than the radiohead track. 4/10

17 GRIMES "Kill V. Maim" (384 points, 11 votes)
what little voice fucking whine shit nonsense is this all chirpy and terrible. its like everything people hate abt j-pop with a coda of evanescence thrown in at minute 2:45. or a whole song based around the worst instincts of lady gaga. people really miss kreayshawn huh. fuck this song. 1/10

the sixth best song on her masterful album art angels but still a solid 8/10. maybe 9.
― nomar, Thursday, 21 January 2016 19:06 (nine years ago) link
I still liked "Kill V. Maim" more than anything I heard off of her first album

16 SUSANNE SUNDFØR "Fade Away" (406 points, 10 votes, 2 first-place votes)
i think im down with this, liking the analog synth thing going on, weird knife/1989 blank space taylor swift/eurythmics vibe which on the face of it makes no sense at all and i know that but hey i just gotta be meeeeeee. ha i swear the keyboard sound is take straight from "i want to break free" by queen which is 1000% ok by me. and hooray for understanding that just over 3 minutes is the perfect length. 9/10

15 JUSTIN BIEBER "Sorry" (474 points, 21 votes)
lolololol i shit you not i spent all year hearing this on the local pop station and was convinced it was Ed Sheeran doing a guitar free singles track. not kidding. amused enough to give it 5/10

7 Kendrick Lamar - Alright
I really have no excuse for not voting for way way more Kendrick on my ballot other than that most of my listening these days is w/the kid and so this song was one of those "skip so we dont learn the wrong words" moments. 9/10

13 RIHANNA "Bitch Better Have My Money (488 points, 18 votes)
my fading interest in Rihanna continues. not terrible, i like shes found and used that scratch in her voice more and more but not much else about this. 5/10

this is totally fine and all but #12 idgi. unremarkable in every way, but not actively bad so hey. 6/10

apparently in 2015 we have gotten to the point where a guy who would have been ok in an opening slot for dizzee is top 15 material

11 GRIMES "Flesh Without Blood" (542 points, 19 votes, 1 first-place vote)
less objectionable than i generally expect but still she just seems incomprehensible to me as anything that people get behind hardcore, the weird key shift on the "i dont care anymore" is interesting until it becomes annoying. she still sounds like something they would play during the end credits of a final fantasy game to me every time i hear her mixed with fake nostalgia for imaginary synthpop or something. 5/10

6 Demi Lovato - Cool for the Summer
Things I know about Demi Lovato. 1. She did that confident song which I loathe. 2. This would be a pretty good instrumental. 3. There are worse singers I suppose. 4. too many syllables in a line doesnt sound interesting, it sounds stupid. 5. I blame Nicolas Winding-Refn for a lot of bad pop this year i think. 4/10

my sole contribution here is that i think three uk rap songs made it into the top 77 and i could not tell you what is remotely interesting about any of them

5 Carly Rae Jepsen - Run Away With Me
maybe i should just stop doing the top ten and realize between this and a bunch of other stuff im totally out of step abt whatever people are hearing in this that is notable. 5/10

there's a lot of stuff in this list that's perfectly nice and inoffensive. kind of wish there were more tracks that blew my hair back.

51 Eric Prydz - "Opus (Four Tet Remix)"
i think i would like to hear this? i'm always vaguely disappointed with four tet remixes but remixing Eric Prydz sounds like a nutso "tex wasabi's"-esque flavor explosion.

4 Miguel - Coffee
It's a pretty gorgeous song and does the backwards looking synthpop better than 90% of the other stuff ive heard from the list so far. great singer obv. i can get behind it. 8/10

If I was going to redo my ballot, I would put more Kendrick on it, because I honestly got more enjoyment out of songs on that album as songs than I did any other album I listened to this year except for Marriages.
