so i'm at work, busy with a sort-of pretty customer and i see old dude lingering at the counter. he's pretty normal-looking: beard, clean, tidy, shirt and pants. i ask the standard how-can-i-help and he drops his voice, leans towards me and says
"this is very embarrassing but i was wondering if you'd mind introducing me that beautiful young lady"
to which i respond something like oh no i couldn't possibly do that, i'd get in trouble, why don't you wait till she leaves the store and introduce yrself.

at this point i am thinking he's talking about the woman i was just talking to, who is now is the dressing room. but over the next couple of mins of conversation i ascertain that he is in fact referring to the 2D, wooden mannequin behind me.

"she is just SO beautiful and elegant, and i love that outfit she's wearing, she has such beautiful eyes!"

note: she's just a piece of wood shaped into a lady, with NO facial features, not even painted on.

then he asks me about nz and we have a nice conversation about bookstores.

audition is vocalising, sight-singing, ear training. no prepared stuff. doing it w/ a coworker, for moral support.

I'd be freaked, too (it's been too long) - but you'll be fine. You have ITR behind you!

Vocalising and ear training should be no big deal what with yr past experience/degrees. Sight-reading is going to suck more, but the important thing is to ask them for time to read through the piece before singing it. Also, stress that you prepare music well.

Also, ask them if you can sing "Bosnia" by The Cranberries at them.

report: audition was relatively quick, no sightreading! first he had me matching little phrases, then he sang 3 phrases and had me join in and sing them over and over til perfect and following his dynamic indications, then we did a canon w/ my coworker. he was pretty intense. we have both passed round 1 but now we will be sent secret music, need to learn both parts (sa for me, tb for him) and when we feel secure, go sing with their section leaders after a rehearsal. after that, they will discuss/vote on whether or not we are in. this is intense!!!!

also, when we went to get coworker for 3-part canonization (lol) he goes, 'oh and hey, no vibrato this time!' and i was like 'asldkgjasldkgj you didn't specify straight tone!' and felt stupid because i guess i should have figured that given the music we were singing. sigh.

Latest drama in my school world is that one of our profs thought she was grading something out of 25 points, but it should have been out of 50 points, and basically everyone thought they had failed this (rather huge) assignment. I've been on the phone for the past two hours with upset fellow students.

See this is why I *work* at a school, not take classes there.

It was not a fun afternoon. I jokingly emailed another student, who had received two points more than I had on this assignment, that she had "gotten a higher 'F' than me!"

Also, the assignment was one of the dreaded billion page papers (TNCs) that everyone hated already. This incident did not give people warm fuzzies.

Did I mention we have a final on Thursday night? A lot of people lost study time in being upset about this nonsense.

i always think transcribing is easier when they have good things to say. it's the fragmented sentences/overuse of phrases like 'you know' and 'actually'/etc. that makes them really hard for me.

Supermodel had great things to say and one of those speech styles that written down looks like blank verse when you need it to be sentences arranged into paragraphs.

btw, I did NOT fail the HESI, and in fact did way better than I expected to. I did not believe the score it spit out at first. And now I have a week off... cannot wait to just lie around and read fiction and make spelling and grammar errors to annoy Dan.

The oddest title I have looked at lately is called Orgasmic Birth, which was mentioned to me by my o.b. nursing instructor. Turns out she wasn't making that film up, either.

to be fair, wholphin is a quarterly DVD magazine done by the McSweeneys peeps that collects short films so it isn't as if it is lighting up the info highway. now available on netflix tho, and worth the effort for "More", which was an oscar nom short animation thingy and several other things of varying quality.

note: "More" also reminded me that "Elegia" by New Order is pretty goddamn amazing.
