I've been worse, though... one time A. and I *lost* J. at a wedding. This was three years ago and she was 4. I thought he was keeping track of her; he thought I was. J is not very cautious, so she just went off to hang out with (to her) strangers. Luckily it was the bride and groom. We found her dancing with them on a whole different floor than we were on!

I fear the day she is old enough to drive a car. We'll probably never see her again.

sara, do you have some advice for what might be a pulled/strained shoulder muscle? i've got a burning/stinging/knifing pain around my shoulder blade - it's usuallly fine in the morn but after being at work a few hours it starts to hurt worse and worse, to the point where lifting my arm (which is most of my job) wears me out with pain.

i get this fairly often, just from overwork or whatever, but it usually only lasts a day. this, however, has been going on for a week now. tonight i iced it for about an hour and it's feeling less burny, but still sore (and i've been taken ibuprofen).

is there anything else i should be doing?

Hmmmm, can you rest it for a few days? Because the ice plus ibuprofen is a great idea, but if you keep doing whatever caused it while it's hurt, it probably won't get better.

I would be really cautious about not resting it - a short rest now/letting it heal is way better than making it very bad and then having to try to repair damage.

Are you having range of motion problems? You don't want to have something like a rotator cuff injury and not have that MRI-ed or at least examined by an MD.

(also: I went to nursing school and it's half useful stuff and half reflections and writing tons of stuff up, so take my advice with the grain of salt it should have! It's not like I even have any real experience... sigh)

I tend to get nasty spots in my shoulder blade and on top of my shoulders from sitting awkwardly at the computer and using the mouse and writing... mostly bad position stuff. But combined with tension, I don't know that it's ever going to be completely better now.

i think i did something while we were cleaning our old apartment last weekend, bc it's been fucked up since then. i have to work tomorrow, but i've got the weekend to rest it. it's my right shoulder - and i'm right-handed - so it makes it hard to rest it, and i can't take time off work :( doctors make me really, really nervous so i'm hoping this will just go away.

oh, i can move it fine, it just stings/burns really bad when it's at the worst stage of pain.

Well, if you can minimize your use of it at work, I would, and then I'd rest and ice as much as I could over the weekend. Hopefully you can prevent the need to see an MD this way!

btw, it's worth it to find a doctor you do feel comfortable with; yes, some of them are arrogant jerks, but most are not - AND some of the preventative stuff they do is critical. My aunt died of ovarian cancer at age 44 in part because she did not follow through with her complete annual exam, so the tumor was missed. She was diagnosed at stage 4 (cancer was in close organs, including liver), and she lived only two years after her diagnosis. Yes, those exams are an annoying pain, but a lot of times prevention and screening is really far superior to trying to cure something that has gone on too long.

I don't think you can ice it "too much" - I'd do ice 20 min. on and then 20 min. off and see if that helps. Austin does this thing when he's marathon training where he freezes a Dixie cup of water and then peels it and uses it as an ice rub (ugh!). I think the real danger with ice is skin damage, so don't leave it on too long and maybe put a thin towel between the ice if you're making your own ice packs (ice from the freezer plus a Ziploc).

And yea... finding an MD you like is hard. I drive to Red Wing (an hour each way) to see my ob/gyn these days - I only see him once a year, but he saw me through two tough/disastrous pregnancies and he's awesome (and he gets my weird sense of humor). Ask around to find out who friends recommend and ask them why they do. MDs can have very different styles. I remember one who was subbing for my ob/gyn when I was pregnant with J - the dude patted my knee and said, "everything is going to be okay" in this really patronizing way. I wanted to punch him! I prefer the straightforward/here's the deal/I'll give you the info and let's figure this out together kind of doc. Some people like the more old-style authoritarian ones that will pat your knee...

Found the recipe this afternoon in a cool cookbook I have, realized I needed to do something with all the raspberries in my backyard, went out and picked two cups of them and used a cup and a half in the brownies. The recipe called for a bit of framboise, but all I had was Chambord, so I used that (some in both the brownies and the ganache on top). OMG they turned out great.

And believe me, them turning out great is entirely due to the recipe; I felt like I was making them wrong the whole time. Who doesn't remember to take the damn butter out of the freezer? Me, that's who.

I suppose you can get addicted to anything, but ibuprofen is less likely than many things (not like it's, say, morphine). Generally speaking, OTC drugs aren't particularly addictive. That doesn't mean that they are supersafe, though - always read the directions and follow them! Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be deadly in large doses - do NOT take more than recommended on the box!!!

(and always look at your meds to make sure you're not taking more than one with acetaminophen... seriously!)

And now I will stop my nurse-nagging for the day. Probably.

xps i don't think so? this may be TMI but: my period used to be totally fuckin crazy irregular, from the first time i got it (like, months apart), but after i came off being on the pill for a few years it seems to have gotten more regular (now it comes at least every 8 weeks). i dunno, every time i've had to mention it to a doctor, they've always acted like it's this totally weird thing but then haven't taken any further diagnostic steps. but yeah, i feel like the longer i have to go between periods, the worse the pain is when i do get it.

and i should mention that my period pain is limited to my back and hips - i hardly ever get cramps, just a cripplingly sore lower back for the first couple of days.

I discovered this week that tylenol is shit and ibuprofen rocks.

I use acetaminophen/Tylenol ONLY if I have such a high fever that I need to use both ibuprofen AND something else. This is a trick I learned from an MD when the kids were little. If one alone can't bring it down, you kind of rotate, every 2-3 hours you can take something. Just don't go over the amount of either, and never never NEVER take acetaminophen with alcohol. EVER.

Seriously, a day and a half into the fever that wouldn't die I switched from tylenol to ibuprofen and bam! Gone!

I actually never use acetaminophen but I always thought it was supposed to be #1 for fevers.

Either one should work for fevers. I had a great virus when I was taking physiology that I couldn't get my temp down under 103 even taking both drugs. I wrote my final paper in a feverish haze... got an A, but still don't know what I wrote on it.

Acetaminophen will NOT work for inflammation. I find it useless for pain, too, but others seem to have better luck.

Don't forget that you should never give aspirin to kids! If they have a virus, they can get Reye's Syndrome (very bad).

I have spent most of my waking hours sorting out and building stuff from a giant bin of mixed up Lego sets. This is fun, although it looks like some kind of child's war is happening in my living room.

btw you guys I toured the new high school and HOLY SHIT it's fucking amazing

like, in some respects it's nicer than most colleges I've seen

I toured the new high school and then went over to OUR high school (now the Middle School) and it was quite the contrast...

As for colleges, a lot of them are updating in a similar vein to attract students. Olaf has an INCREDIBLE new science center which features (I am not kidding) a staffed coffee bar on one of the floors. (Hey, if you are still in Minnesota, you and J. could come over and I will give you random tours of Northfield, lure lure lure...)

oh, sara: my shoulder is better, finally - i think the problem was my new seat at the workshop. i was getting really sore feet from standing all day, esp. in one spot, so i asked my boss for a stool (i often am standing at a table for several hours, tagging and folding garments after dyeing) so she gave me this crappy old thing, and that's when the shoulder pain started. now i'm standing again, it's eased off significantly.

but now i have sore feet again.

Yay, I'm glad your shoulder is feeling better, just1n3! But sorry about the sore feet... I'd pick that over a sore shoulder, though, I guess...

I'm trying to get my kids to get dressed so we can go get our stuff done for the day. Yes, it is after noon and I'm still trying to make this happen. GAH

I feel like any zombies coming out tonight are going to fall apart immediately due to waterlogging.

So the flooding in Owatonna is so bad that they are worried about the Cannon, so they're calling for volunteers to sandbag in town (NOT a euphemism!). Carleton has evacuated four houses and Laird stadium (presumably bc it's by Lyman lakes). They have an emergency plan to turn off electricity and evacuate a bunch of other buildings (like the library and the CMC, where A. works). They have also warned the students to stay out of the water bc it is dangerous (yes, A. saw some of them going in yesterday in swimsuits). Only one bridge in town is open to cross the Cannon.

See how clever Olaf was to build on a huge hill? Well, except for the freezing wind every winter. (and there's still no excuse for the lutefisk)

Good news: still no zombies today!
