Because people are too invested in the narrative of Kanye as an unlikable, egomaniacal jackass to get into that album, which has a lot of his best production and some really fantastic to-my-ears intentionally-self-deflating songs (like, anyone listening to "Paranoid" or "Robocop" or "Heartless" with the mindframe that we are supposed to come away from it agreeing with the point of view presented by the songs consumes and processes art in a manner completely foreign to me).
― emo WINNER! (HI DERE), Thursday, 8 July 2010 17:21 (fourteen years ago) link
Rachel is/was the hot one from S Club 7
Hannah > Tina > Rachel > Jo.
Also 808 is just 'ooooh poor me, my life of lots of money and attractive women is sooo hard. pity me. i said pity me! btw brb, gonna go do loads of coke and sleep with bald girls, but don't you stop feeling sorry for me while i'm away. also i r above rapping now.'

so basically your argument is "back in the pigeonhole I have created for you, Kanye"
― emo WINNER! (HI DERE), Thursday, 8 July 2010 17:31 (fourteen years ago) link
man i think this once again gets back to the whole thing we talked about uh somewhere in another thread about making the basic assumption of characters in songs vs. taking songs as statements of purpose/reality. like really to me (and uh dont get me wrong i am pretty into a good lyric) at the end of the day i cant really work a lot of the actual person into the song persona because that isnt how songs work for me.

It really isn't. I am not one of these people who got pissy at Andre 3000 for not rapping as much. But Kanye doing it, and then 'returning' as if rap 'needed' him is just eurgh. Like the genre couldn't survive with one dude going off singing and being a dickhole. And again, its really not hard to make an album to get people to sympathise with you and yr personal problems, just don't act like a dick about it ("my friend should me pictures of his kids, and all i could show him was my brand new cribs" being a way to start an album at the biggest time of foreclosures in decades is a p big dick move imo. etc etc etc)
Beats are nice tho.
― fuque santa cruz (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 8 July 2010 17:37 (fourteen years ago) link
Yeah, that's the thing; maybe I am approaching this differently not because I'm a performer but because of the type of performing I do and the way I write, but even things that could conceivably be linked to me and my life aren't actually me when I am singing about them; like, I wrote a song about how I wanted to kill myself after my brother died, but when I sing that song I am not actually saying "btw I want to kill myself because my brother died". I am telling a story based on some emotions and experiences from my past, but the voice is a character.
Now, there are certain things that come through when you adopt certain characters that may come across as repellent, which may be your intent but may not be, which is why the whole n-word thread happened; there are certain topics that you need to be sure that your communication is on point otherwise all you will do is piss people off and brand yourself an asshole. (Arguably EVERY topic you write about should have this same attention to communication, if only to make sure that you interrogate your work from several angles and are okay with the differing responses it may evoke; "careful communication" does not equal "this song means this and this only and I will spell it out in unambiguous detail".)
xp: well Kanye's "return to rap" is the real point where his ego steps in; I see it less in his actual work and more in what projects he decides to do next and how he promotes himself. Also, to run off of that example, I don't think the timing of the financial collapse was really his fault or undermines the point made by that line, which is that Kanye-the-character is upset that he sacrificed making time for personal relationship and starting a family for acquiring wealth and that he feels empty inside in a manner that, to his eyes, his friend with a family does not.
― emo WINNER! (HI DERE), Thursday, 8 July 2010 17:43 (fourteen years ago) link
ok yeah i get that. maybe i should add '+ half the lyrics are super embarrassing and he needs to go back to getting ghostwriters to help him.'

hahahaha ok i lied about vitalic, if someone had said "you know, the video with slow motion dogs and lasers" i would have known the error of my ways.
"Poney no 1 (slomo dogs and lasers remix)" is ok i guess, this "la rock 01" song is way weirder and more appealing to me, i feel like it could have crawled out of some weird pocket of the early 90s TC industrial rave scene, that wheedly high pitched wiggle thing is awesome. "My friend Dario" is fucking unmitigated electroclash garbage tho, gross.

Phoenix seems like a band designed to be used in commercials (ie, their songs are fine for like 15 seconds, but around second 16 you're like "wait this is horrifically annoying, fuck off")
re: YYYs, what have you heard? All I've really heard are "Maps", "Y Control" and It's Blitz!; I think the video for "Y Control" is way better than the actual song, "Maps" is just gorgeous in how the music is arranged and the way she sings it, and IB! pretty much front-to-back is fantastic, especially if you listen to it as a series of EPs rather than an entire album (meaning I usually take "Zero", "Heads Will Roll", "Soft Shock" and "Skeletons" as a unit, then "Dull Life", "Blame and Fortune" and "Runaway" as a unit, and "Dragon Queen", "Hysteric" and "Little Shadow" as a unit).
For me, the album hits its stride around "Dull Life"; however, you are never going to like them because yet again it's a band fronted by a woman with a yelpy laserish voice and by now it is pretty well documented that you hate that type of thing.

― SAIL HATIN' (jjjusten), Friday, 9 July 2010 19:49 (fourteen years ago) link
also they are the band where the guitar player released a book of photos of their tour and them being AWESOME and doing ROCK AND ROLLING things and pimped it like some art triumph when in fact it was kind of like jerking off into a baggie and trying to get your friends to frame it and hang it on their wall.
― SAIL HATIN' (jjjusten), Friday, 9 July 2010 19:51 (fourteen years ago) link
I am kind of surprised you wouldn't fuck with "Maps" or "Y Control" though considering she's not at all yelpy or laserish on either of those
hxtp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIIxlgcuQRU
xp: but if the book had featured pictures of them jerking off into a baggie that would have been kind of funny; also the guitar player is a massive nerd and should be ignored whenever he's not playing

well they definitely started out super theatrical and put on, there's no question about that; you can't do a song like "Fun For Me" or "Where Is the What If the What Is in Why?" and claim 100% earnestness
by the time you get to stuff like "Sing It Back", "Familiar Feeling" and "Forever More" though, the theatricality is less dadaist and more grounded in realistic narrative, and then you have face-meltinginly beautiful things like this:

At one point I thought "I Am Not A Doctor" was the finest album ever recorded and those youtubes are making me think I may just have been right
that wobbling bass noise on "Knee Deepen" is a work of art
not sure I ever actually heard all of Things To Make And Do as I felt kinda betrayed by hit Boris Dlugosch remix etc, but Indigo is a pretty rad song, so I probably should get over decade-old kneejerking

despite being one of like 3 Devin Townsend fans on ILM I haven't heard OF that one let alone heard it! also yes, I need to hear Gay Witch Abortion, as has been discussed. FOTL are great and I've seen them live and they were great live too and really funny between songs!
I've heard and liked Psychoscout too, would you believe. I put it on a few times during my stint at that classical and jazz store because the cover looked promising. Sold a few copies! One of the better nu-jazz acts - need to relisten.

it's one of the most wilfully distorted, fucked-up recordings in the history of pop-metal, I'll give it that - maybe you'd prefer their cleaner recordings! endless, nameless was very much a 'fuck-you' experiment - I just happen to love it in all its abrasive glory
slightly low quality but what can ya do:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPs02a1bie0
If that fails, I'll get back to praising Devin Townsend, and not a word more of this shall e'er be spoken

LJ, did you ever hear Black Moth Super Rainbow? Their Dandelion Gum album kind of comes across as Boards of Canada on ecstacy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYQMs_zXF9k
also they are willing to go much creepier than anything I've seen from BoC (whom you know I love):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MC6aAs4kkbY&feature=related
― HI DERE, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 20:21 (fourteen years ago) link
Lollipopsichord starts off sounding like every band Pitchfork has 'broken' for the past 5 years, finds a flute and some meaty synths, doesn't come from anything remotely like the same fragile pastoral-hip-hop sound-world of BoC, has some mysterious vocals, ends. Nonetheless, I refuse to discount them.
Sun Lips is much better - like, MUCH better, while still being a bit garishly this-must-belong-to-some-wave-right. I like the video, even if it is a bit silly. The flute works really well this time. Even less BoCesque. Got a sorta psych-folk vibe, just done with synths. I bet they read their blogs.
Still, I may give their stuff a proper go...

btw JJ the 'big reveal' was gonna be that Devin Townsend is an ex-member of The Wildhearts and the two are mutually enamoured of each other in a big sorta way - 'Resolve!' is a Wildhearts tribute, in fact
I have absolutely no doubt you'll go ape for quite a lot of Wildhearts material (if not necessarily the distortion-bomb blow-out) so take it as a VERY strong recommendation

it took this hm album for me to realize that aprt of the appeal there is that theres a weird touchstone between hm singer and the power bellowing that foetus used to do a lot of the time, esp in clint ruin/wiseblood mode. in retrospect shoulda voted this somewhat higher

first impression of zola jesus was that the world doesnt need yet another fucking siouxsie copycat but theres something kind of interesting going on musically that gets me in a way that makes up for finding her voice reallll boring. this night song which i guess must be the single maybe? is pretty bland, but the song that youtube says is named stridulum is kind afantastic at the end so - idk, peeps that dig this should lead me through the zone here.
3EF was one of my top votes, so i dont really need to dig in there.
tallest man on earth - wow there are not a lot of names worse than this, but i havent heard a note yet, so ill reserve judgement. uh ok so people are way overselling the guitar work on this, not that its bad, but its kinda standard decent acoustic picking stuff, vocals dont bug me as much as they seem to for others - kinda a more cautious version of paleo. in fact people who are into this should just go ahead and go check out some Paleo, its kinda this dude done better. this is ok i guess.

i dont really need to hear any more kylie minogue, i just dont get it and i never will and thats fine
this warpaint thing (undertow) seems to be a bunch of fiddly nonsense, messy oververbed and look at me! lazy cant be bothered attitude, dont like stuff like this at all really. second song now (majesty) and actually thats too soft, i really fucking hate this.
sun araw - started with ma holo and man i am tired of endless loopy nonsense as a thing i guess idk if its just not getting high anymore or what but i am done w/this stuff. beat cop now and unless this goes somewhere soon before we all die, i just dont have any idea what this is supposed to do for me, it just sounds like unfun dub with half the ideas and several decades late.
xpost: sorry was out selling stuff - have not seen mother of fire, but could see totally digging them from that description, will investigate

gayngs - this has some promise maybe, glitcho stuff at the beginning but now theres smooth jazz saxophone and breathy singing and fucking hell is this the year of reverb or what? and now thanks to wikipedia i realize that these dudes are from minneapolis, and some of them are friends of mine. sorry. and this cover of godley and creme fucking blows and makes me irrationally angry.

this selena gomez thing is ok in a "didnt madonna already do that "Music" album a while ago" way. actually i like it less and less the more i hear. her voice is boring to me, altho proficient i guess.
does anything ever actually happen in this gang gang dance song

ok it isnt bad per se but it is about 8 minutes too long

haha yeah, from what ppl said on the thread it basically functions as a prelude on the album?

i already said what i had to say about this pistol annies nonsense on the main thread
i am shocked to discover that i think i actually like this tune-yards thingy, the arpeggiated vocal stuff is interesting - this sounds like somebody that listened to a lot of the right peter gabriel records but maybe took some of the vocal tricks a little too much to heart.

oh hey we're back
anyway I sent you a tune-yards song I like via Spotify; overall I definitely ADMIRE her stuff more than I actually LIKE it

i'd trash the tune-yards song here but flopson summed it up pretty well on the results thread

i can only assume that the voters for that have never heard the other million singers throughout time that have done that sort of thing better and the other 10 million songs that have better lyrics huh

"so imagine that theres this edith piaf song, but she cant sing and doesnt seem to care very much about being there, but wait also the lyrics were written by an idiot."

why do people, people i like and enjoy and respect even, continue to want to listen to john maus
it is so baffling to me, i cant even come up with pithy slanderous things to say, the closest i have come is calling him a third rate xiu xiu without the catchy tunes which is sonically wrong but feels right somehow

there are some similarities between maus and xiu xiu -- you are not crazy

the first thing that made me want to hear Death Grips was the fact that Zach Hill was involved.
