The Dorrett thing is SO SAD
I always scream when people drop their food, or like a layer falls off the top off a cake - I don't know why, it makes me really nervous, like watching a small child on a really tall climbing frame.

Mr Veg found the first 3 seasons of Bake-Off for me on the t0rentz
Season 1 format is rather different! The tent travels round to different cities, they eliminate 2 bakers each episode, and Sue and Mel do a lot of 'history of the biscuit' 'history of the cake' interstitial stuff during challenges so it's not 100% baking heavy the way it is now. Which isn't great, cuts too much into the baking which is the best part. Also episode 1 inside the tent was shot very jumpily, and not very well light, so it wasn't nearly as colorful as it quickly became in the next episode. Thankfully they fixed that pretty quick. Mary Berry's hair is very flat!Bakers call out to the judges and ask how much time is left! And there's some dude doing the voiceover which is v weird.
Favorite moment so far was Ep 1 with Sue sitting on a blanket inside a stone ring with an eccentric-voiced longhaired baking historian discussing bannocks and I have NO idea how she sat through that without bursting into gales of laughter. I wish I could find a photo of him.

oh and:signature bakes are a little bit looser: bake any kind of cake, bake any kind of biscuittechnicals so far have been basics like victoria sponges or scones, but the bakers are given the ingredients only: no method at all
and there's a weird little canteen area in back where bakers can go up and ask for items, one lady ran over and asked for double cream.
it's kind of fun seeing how it's all evolved!

god the showstoppers are out of control on S1
SIX different types of bread rolls, half a dozen each! 3 savory, 3 sweet
SIX canapes, 3 savory, 3 sweet, half a dozen each!
Three puddings: suet, baked, crumble!
they must have drowned in leftovers, holy shit
i would have ptsd after these

s1 almost done
- can't STAND ruth and it makes me feel bad bc shes a good baker etc. idk. buu her stupid "boy bait" pudding and making quiche for the finale "for the men" it's like she's pandering to paul and it drives me barmy
-they have clearly done some work reigning in paul bc he was a borderline WANKER in this season. key moment: dismissed ruth's cupcakes as too girly AS THE ONLY MAN ON A PANEL OF WOMEN!! and farting on about stuff looking commercial & professional ragh i love him now but i could slap him almost once every episode
- mary berry telling miranda she reminded her of hrself when she was young <3 that would make my life

I finished Season 2 of English bake off & it's pretty marvellous
Jo's such a love - bubbly but terrified, Essex mum finally doing "something for herself". I read online that her husband was doing 16 years in jail for money laundering at the time. Which just made me love her more. she seemed like she mightve had a hard life & that confirmed it
and MaryAnne!! What a treat. Rugby champion, baking historian, mum, wizard. Amazing. She has a book!
Janet was hilarious - mr veg said her facial expressions reminded him of Beaker from the muppets
lots of great women in this season.
As for the guys -
dreamboat Rod turned out to be a bit of a disaster, very disorganized, bit too cavalier. he definitely put the wind up Paul, I've never seen the silver fox come down on a baker like he did with Rod.
sweet baby Jason had sooooooo much potential, very talented for one so young but was just a tad too green for the big leagues. Definitely fun to watch though.

I just finished the Chetna season! I really admired Richard for his ability to laugh at himself, and it was sad to see him crumble in the last week, though I would've been fine with any of the final three winning. (When they showed a picture of a young Richard with a full head of hair, I can see why Veg might crush on him!)
One episode into the next season, and watching Ruby struggle with her lack of self-confidence is so painful (I empathize with her completely), I'm not sure I can handle a whole season's worth (I caught a random episode of this season on PBS and know she hangs around for at least a little while).

Social media is full of people complaining about her vocal fry, and/or her telling Noel to FRO when she was in the middle of something.
― guillotine vogue (suzy), Thursday, 31 October 2024 11:27 (two weeks ago) link
Her vocal fry is AMAZING though. She is absolutely cursed with a permanently sarcastic tone of voice, and perhaps the most Millenial baker the tent has ever seen. She's fantastic, though.
Broken hearted for the second week in a row over the exiteer. Found Nelly's exit speech genuinely moving, though I will admit I am very, very tired at the moment.
― Judge Judy, executioner (stevie), Thursday, 31 October 2024 11:30 (two weeks ago) link
I love Sumayah too, because she has no trouble batting away men and/or the annoying things they say. She also seems well prepared.
Curses on the judges for sending the wrong contestant home (a tough choice because both are good on telly).
― guillotine vogue (suzy), Thursday, 31 October 2024 11:46 (two weeks ago) link
I mean Sumayah’s “sarcasm” is just a Lancastrian accent and manner

I think Dylan was the lesser baker yesterday but Paul is all in on him, he's the golden child, so unless he poisons everyone he'll be in the final. And he's usually v v v good, but he wasn't yesterday.
Although Nelly did also make a spinach cake even she thought wasn't her best work.

Love Nellie and her exit speech but think she was the right choice. Either way - think this has been the best series since Mel and Sue? Not sure why. Some combination of the contestants and Alison and Matt Lucas not being there to suck the contestants into his narcissistic comedy bits. Sumayah is a good check on Noel too.

i now know more about Parkin than i ever did before (which was zero) deeply sad about this week’s exit (sigh… continued sighing)Sumaya’s pretty fun, such a talented baker - that parsnip beetroot cake sounded so disgusting when they described it but it looked SO good i would prob eat it Chistian’s unpredictable accent is v amusing to me

Absolutely. I think it's partly that the standard of baker this year has been so high, and also that Noel and Alison have such great chemistry, and work so well with the bakers. Even Paul seems to have lightened up and to not be such a swaggering grump anymore.

i’m a few episodes behind but we were watching the caramel week episode last night & was just really cracking up a lot. nelly in particular is one of my favorite ever contestants. i do think alison is just great at the job tho, really inspired choice. it almost felt too obvious at the time but she is just one of the most naturally lovable TV personalities i can remember. putting her in the tent feels like it was meant to be

btw do we think that the bakers are not going home every week in between episodes anymore? there was a comment from one someone earlier in the season asking dylan if he had brought 10 different hats with him that made me think they’ve switched things up behind the scenes. also, am i crazy or have they cut the parts where they show each baker’s home life, those canned clips of them carrying out their hobbies and stuff? i only watch this show stoned so disregard me if my memory is offthey’ve also been experimenting w/ the technical challenge this season … correct me if i’m wrong but some of that (i.e. showing the bakers what the finished product should look like) was the first time they’ve really ever deviated from the format of the show in any of the rounds? bake off has traditionally been such a contrast to american style competition shows like top chef or drag race where they constantly add new elements to the basic structure to make each season feel new/differenti haven’t been bothered by any of this but it feels like they’re tweaking some things as they go now
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 31 October 2024 16:18 (two weeks ago) link
do we think that the bakers are not going home every week in between episodes anymore?
that was definitely the case during covid, not sure if it is now. find it hard to believe the parents among the bakers would abandon their kids for however long it takes to make the series - but they're often moved when they phone home to say they're star baker
― Judge Judy, executioner (stevie), Thursday, 31 October 2024 16:36 (two weeks ago) link
yeah less homelife interstials, i think just one at the begining - and yes they changed up that technical but it doesnt seem to be a permanent change - i liked it thoi assume they still go home in between eps but i dont really know for certain
― werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 31 October 2024 16:38 (two weeks ago) link
it wouldn’t surprise me if post covid they’ve moved to the american competition show style of just housing everyone for like 3 weeks and condensing the shooting overall. i’ve been rewatching the rahul season on the side and there’s frequent mentions of home life, the practicing they did at home during the previous week etc that once was standard but that i feel like you don’t hear in this season
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 31 October 2024 16:41 (two weeks ago) link
Another improvement this year is that I think that they've maybe increased the time allotted for some of the tasks? Bread week didn't seem to be the usual repetitive "this is underproved" or "this is underbaked" from Paul. Or maybe they've just improved the instructions they give them when the bakers are devising their recipes?
