Can you tell I haven't eaten anything today?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 2 November 2002 09:17 (twenty-two years ago) link

Belgian fries with curry sauce, Heath bars, the pizza at V&T up by Columbia (I have dreams about the sauce), the pizza at Benny Tudino's in Hoboken, just about any Ethiopian or Indian food, anything that involves saffron, the combination of fresh basil and chili sauce, the dosa at the Madras Mahal, the BBQ at Virgil's, the tiramisu at the Mona Lisa, the calamari fra diavolo (and the salads) at the Traviata in Brooklyn, the brunch specials at the Odessa on weekends, grilled cheese with bacon, sour garlic pickles, any kind of freshly baked bread (esp. Jewish rye bread), the barbecued spare ribs at my local Chinese takeout, the veggie dumplings at my other local Chinese takeout... oh god, the list goes on and on.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 2 November 2002 09:43 (twenty-two years ago) link

Pizza. Pizza, pizza, pizza. Pizza is the perfect food. Especially quattro formaggi (don't yell at my Italian spelling, please, Ed). Yum, yum, yum.

And eggs. There is no wrong way to eat eggs, I like them just fine any way. But especially in cheese & onion omlettes with LOADS of chips. Followed by an apple turnover from Percy Ingles.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 2 November 2002 10:18 (twenty-two years ago) link

we've had white nectarines the last couple of weeks - they are like the food equivalent of jasmine scented twilights!

minna (minna), Saturday, 2 November 2002 12:59 (twenty-two years ago) link

Too many choices. But suffice to say I need more Ethiopian cuisine in general in my diet.

There is more to London pizza than Pizza Hut, let me assure you, Julio. Two words: La. Porchetta. Oh god, I'm going to be living a less than five minute walk from La Porchetta. This could be dangerous...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 3 November 2002 10:36 (twenty-two years ago) link

Anything is improved by adding sugar, whether in frosting or syrup or whatever. I do not exclude ILX posters from this view.

I was in La Porchetta on Thursday. It was okay, but I wasn't especially impressed.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 3 November 2002 13:10 (twenty-two years ago) link

La Porchetta on Upper St is not as good or friendly as the Stroud Green Road branch. (i am 2 mins away from that. which is nice...)

Curry is only worth eating if it's made by somebody from Nepal (even better if they're a Gurkha). Right now I am stuffing my face with Starburst SeaMonsters, which are delicious and addictive (and like so wrong for me to be eating coz I'm allergic to food colourings and will itch for the next month, but I'm having a tough time just now so I've decided to be self indulgent and dumb). Percy Pigs from M&S are the best sweets EVER invented, I defy anyone to dislike them!

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 4 November 2002 14:30 (twenty-two years ago) link

Curry is only worth eating if it's made by somebody from Nepal

This is the biggest lie i have ever heard. it's not even remotely plausible. :-)

Alan (Alan), Monday, 4 November 2002 15:31 (twenty-two years ago) link

Alan, have you tried a curry made by somebody from Nepal?

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 4 November 2002 15:34 (twenty-two years ago) link

that's not the point. i know there's a big deal. but "worth eating". you don't know my pedestrian tastes...

nachos. refried beans. fried egg sandwiches. hash browns. toast. garlic. eggs benedict. fresh squeezed orange juice. peas and rice. sushi rolls. tom yam soup. pad thai. baba ganoush. lemons.

that's a start

Alan (Alan), Monday, 4 November 2002 15:39 (twenty-two years ago) link

Once you have tasted a Nepali curry, all other curries will be dead to you....

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 4 November 2002 15:45 (twenty-two years ago) link

yeah yeah. whatever.

Alan (Alan), Monday, 4 November 2002 17:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I second the 'yeah yeah whatever'.

I don't know what you're classing as a curry, but I could try the same line with the cuisine served in Rasa, Plinky. Have you ever eaten there?

I bet there are loads of Nepalese who can't cook to save their lives.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 4 November 2002 17:11 (twenty-two years ago) link

Probably but I like 'em, it's just my way of being effusive, ignore me and continue......

Plinky (Plinky), Monday, 4 November 2002 17:13 (twenty-two years ago) link

Fresh bread with a nice brie and butter. Vegetable samosas. Halva. Roast potatoes. Prawns. Chips with plenty of vinegar, and possibly mayonnaise. Toasted cheese sandwiches. Good naan.

alix (alix), Monday, 4 November 2002 17:14 (twenty-two years ago) link

good naan and sweet dreams

mark s (mark s), Monday, 4 November 2002 17:17 (twenty-two years ago) link

I love every food just for being itself!

JBR: if you are making the trek uptown for pizza, you are selling yourself short by going to V&T rather than Sal and Carmine's.

mmmm... pickles... All this talk of Gherkins...

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't know, there's something special about the Nepalese curries I've had...we only ever go to the Gurkha Grill in West Didsbury (Manchester) now. All the other curry places I've been to around town (although I did like and even love some of them) seem oily and heavy in comparison. Quite a few of my friends have converted to a Gurkha only lifestyle too.

That's not to say I wouldn't give any nice looking curry house a try.

I love too much food to list, but I did stumble onto an amazing dipping sauce recipe for spring rolls, tempura, sesame chicken negamaki, grilled tofu...

Take one red pepper, seed & roughly chop. Whiz pepper chunks with 3/4 cup (that's 187 ml) of white vinegar (I used white malt vinegar as you can't seem to get anything else in the UK, and it worked fine.) in a blender until smooth. Put 1/2 cup caster sugar in a pot, add pepper mixture and 1/2 tsp dried chili flakes (more if you like!). Simmer 5 minutes, then cool. It keeps for a week in the fridge.

I tell you, it is gorgeous - and so much nicer than any bottled sauce you could get.

The reasons I stay in Chicago:
Italian Beef (Karm's, Portillos, Margies, Carso's and other local dives that sometimes have better beef)
Giordano's Stuffed Pizza--spinach, onions, black olives)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:55 (twenty-two years ago) link

i like half sour dills lately

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes Oops, Carm's (with a C) is indeed the best Italian beef in the world!! Good Ices too. Don't sleep on Ricobene's either, they've got a good one.

Al's I don't like as much.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago) link

Forgot about Mr. Beef, which is also pretty damn tasty

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago) link

Food is that, which can never be loved.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago) link

CHOCOLATE! also a good curry, a good pasta, most cakes and pastries, mangoes, sauteed mushrooms, avocado sushi, buttery popcorn.

all this talk of food is making me hungry, and none of the above listed things are in the house! arrrrrrrrrrrgggggggg!!

sand.y, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago) link

I totally crush out on my food sometimes, like last night when Mary and I got coconut chicken curry and I hadn't eaten anything all day. ROWR!

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago) link

Are you all really fat?
I am, but it has nothing to do with my love of food.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago) link

Explain this one to me. Are you breathing special calorie-heavy air or something?

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago) link

(She has a hormone fuckup medical condition thing - Cushing's Disease)

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ewww - that's unfortunate.

What do you look like Graham? I imagine you to be blond, pale-skinned and thin. Are you?

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago) link

I am the size of a house and quite pasty.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh Lord, Harold's Chicken Shack! Speaking of special calorie-heavy air! I still have a layer of their grease on my lungs, just from walking by once or twice ten years ago.

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago) link

I thought you'd look like an imp from A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago) link

I love food. Tonight I shall feast on kimchi ramen nooldes and fudge cake. I could do with losing a stone and a half by eating less. Or getting more exercise. Or, um, thinking really hard about being thin.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago) link

I wonder can you 'think yourself thin'? I suppose if you think you're thin you might also think that you shouldn't shovel cake into your mouth as thin people don't eat crap etc. etc.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago) link

Spot on Lara.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago) link

Did you just take that photo? Technology (that contruibutes to fun times i.e. not that which I work with) still thrills me.

Your posts remind me of another friend who is blong, pale-skinned and thin but you're better looking. He looks a bit like an Andrex puppy.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago) link

Poor guy.

one year passes...
i just followed up my meal of ribs with a piece of chocolate cake. i am exceptionally happy with this turn of events. whatever forces brought the universe into being, they clearly want us to eat ribs and then chocolate cake.
