There's one which frequents the stream behind my workplace. When it gulps down a fish you can see the bulge descend in peristaltic grossness.

What is yr experience of Ardea cinerea and its relatives?

There are some elegant white herons which perch on artificial rocks at Nakameguro, just along the Meguro River from my house. A small leafy trellis has been set up on the riverside path over a specially-placed bench so that people can observe the lovely creatures striking poses against the dark green water. The deep glow of tranquility resulting from this municipal birdwatching is better than heroin.

Herons are common as muck around these parts (Derwent Valley, NE England). The Hoopoe is much more high-class, I think
