my sister was a division i ncaa equestrian in college and took 1st in equitation for the state of massachusetts in her senior year. sadly she only took 4th in regionals and did not make it to nationals

i think most of her competitors grew up owning horses, we were not quite that fancy though obviously my parents invested a lot in her hobby

My stepbrother's wife is some sort of champion barrel racer, and now her daughter is doing it. I've never seen her in action, I haven't been to the rodeo in years.

i am a horse girl in my heart but never lived that life

i had two friends in primary school who both owned horses & would canter instead of run during any school athletics or sports, and made tails out long grass that they tied to the rear belt loop in their jeans - they were a deep & lasting influence on me

my cousins had horses - my older cousin still goes alpine riding & full on Man From Snowy River coolness. when we visited i’d get to ride my younger cousin’s lovely little pony (while being led)

one time she was gone & my older cousin let me ride his huge bay mare
he plonked me on the saddle & was like “ok kick her to go, pull to turn, off you go” and i was like WAIT WTF NO LEAD? lmao i was terrified plus it was like sitting on a mountain, i was maybe 10

anyway i love horse girls with all my heart whether they are aspiring ie Tina Belcher or whether they are fully out there doing it Olympic Princess Anne Esquestriannes

haaaaaaaaaa LMAO this was my sister all through grade school

my sister had so many damn breyer horses when she was in grade school, i think at some point my parents finally realized that the breyer horses were gonna end up costing more and be more useless than just getting her lessons (and then she turned out to be really good at it, lo and behold)

I did not have a horse as a child (took riding lessons on other ppl's horses) and my poor golden retriever had to fill in. I would set up jumps in the yard and he would do his best to clear them. Also tried to fashion a bridle/bit, which did not go so well.

My wife was a horse girl growing up on a farm when she was younger. Her horse was named Chango. She hadn't ridden in 30 years when, about 5 years ago, she rode in the hills of Los Angeles as part of a work trip. She said she was terrified but she also had a great time.

My wife's aunt and cousin are major horse girls. Large animal vets, specifically.

They also own a farm that is a retirement home for old racehorses and some of those fuckers are bity!

I am going to be riding a bitey former racehorse today! Not so much bitey as mouthy, he likes to lip things. It's really cute actually.

To be fair, anyone who has spent appreciable time with horses has gotten hurt one way or another. But WORTH IT!, say the horse girls.

I've done both, and riding an elephant > riding a horse. That said, I've always been kind of fascinated by dressage. "I'm so incredibly rich, I can spend hundreds of hours teaching my horse to dance."

Was on a hike by myself and saw a horse. Then another. Then soon was surrounded by 10 or so. Wild I assume? Started getting nervous. "Wait horses don't attack humans ever do they?? Hid behind a juniper. One of the horses goes AROUND the tree and is a few feet from me, glaring at me. "Horses don't do coordinated attacks do they????". I'm legit worried at this point. So I whoop and holler and clap my hands. They look at one another and then run off. "Yeah y'all don't want none of this, that's what I thought!!"

So instead we threw him in the hot walker (aka equiciser) for the first time. He was not amused.

In other horse girl news, I had my first proper dressage lesson yesterday and thought of Ann Romney and that late night interview where Mitt downplayed the whole "dancing horses" thing.

I took a horse riding lesson the other day. still processing but it was harder than expected. lotta multitasking. I kept wanting to be more passive, I think that's my instinct. the horse was getting confused. I think I was telling him to stop and go at the same time, poor guy. the horse was lovely. His name is Jasper.

it takes a bit of practice to get it all working together! i dont think i ever really got it all the way down. but it helps to have a patient horse <3

First timers are often stunned about how sore they are in following days.

Be careful, it can be addicting. I got my first horse at age 46, after being out of the saddle for 20 years.

I'm now competing in 3-Day Eventing, jumping 4', and breaking various bones.

Oh and they will take all of your money and then some. It's only the second month of the year and I'm down let's see oh wait nooooo I don't even want to add it up.

My horse's shoes--and he only wears two, on his fronts, cost $250 Every. Six. Weeks.

Q are you still in DC? I visited my dad's wife's family about an hour outside in VA for Christmas and my God that is horse country around there. It made me want to ride again so badly. I wonder if it's the kind of thing you remember how to do even after a long time.

oh that's awesome. i have not been on a horse since i was .. maybe 10 or 11? i don't even remember learning to ride really. super foggy memories of a spring / summer in ... oh my god i can't even remember the name! the community group that organizes youth horse riding and holds competitions and such. not ffa, something else. christ. anyway we had horses when i was a kid. i really love them. reading this helps me remember. i'd really love to do like a guided trail experience on horses in the desert somewhere. even better would be to make friends with people who have horses. not impossible by any means out here!

We live near a place where horses are boarded and in the spring, summer, and fall there are always beginner's classes being given for dressage. The classes are filled exclusively with horse girls. Nary a boy in sight. It's easy to tell when the class is for slightly more advanced pupils, because they wear those little round black helmets.

I'm learning to trot! western style by default.
after one lesson my sense is that i would probs rather groom, lead or otherwise care for the horses than ride them
but one thing I'm really looking forward to is using all the idioms literally
