My actual first time ever hearing NIN:

I was staying at my Aunt’s house while on a family road trip, and looking through my cousin’s CDs. My cousin is a few years older than me. I was extremely sheltered musically at that point. He had lots of CDs from bands that I hadn’t heard yet: Korn, Limp Bizkit, Rage Against the Machine, Tool, Radiohead. I knew Radiohead slightly from the "High and Dry" video, and didn't want to risk straying from what I already knew. So I found that song title on the back of The Bends, put on the CD that was in the case, skipped ahead to track 3, and made it to "Your God is dead, and no one cares" before turning it off in horror.

had this [covid] recently, pretty certain picked up on a train in spain. i felt pretty average and quite tired but the main problem was that i got an infected ear at the same time. which of course *really* doesn’t let you sleep. so a combination of being v tired and not able to get any sleep was not good and although i got over the covid relatively quickly im still managing the overall knock on effects a couple of weeks later.

people have asked how i knew to test and i’m “idk it just felt like covid?” crackly throat, generally run down, sniffling etc. this is my third go round (none of them servere in themselves) and im getting to know the drill.

I think the Brent character works because he's a very real type of person, a guy who was probably made to feel fundamentally unloved in his youth, and his desperation for love becomes a vicious cycle of making him less lovable. There's this little vague twinkle of self-awareness of how hard he's trying there, but not enough that he can escape it, because his neediness is just way stronger than anything else. He reminds me of someone I know in this way. Whereas Neil is just the cold, practiced, somewhat psychopathic face of corporate capitalism. Neil is fully absorbed into it and handles it with ease. Neil is impervious to love and people love him for it, or at least admire him in a way.

I was about to post that I suspect the character is a bit close to home for Gervais, and then I looked at his Wikipedia page, and sure enough, there's this: "Gervais has mentioned in interviews that, as an 11-year-old, he asked why his siblings were so much older than he was; his mother bluntly told him that he "was a mistake".["

one month passes...

My folks get these round-robin letters from three different families every Christmas. They're photocopies - either of originally handwritten letters or printed documents - and must go to I guess 20 or 30 people? I can't fully explain the feeling they give me.

The mixture of self-dramatisation/grandiosity and soul-crushing banality gets me. It's just the reality of most lives, I guess, but 1) why share your gallstones, your sons' marriage problems, your vitamin D deficiency; 2) turn your afternoons watching the grandchildren put on puppet shows into something from a Trollope novel?

I'm friends with some of the children described in the letters and know how embarrassed they are to be described as 'leading up a global project' when, in reality, they're tending to spreadsheets; not to mention how much of an arsehole the letter-writer has been that year.

My favourite detail this year was how the husband from one family had had several health issues, and that his 'testicles had swollen to the size of a ballcock'.

i appear to be the only person in the family with an Amazon account. so can i order some things for them? last year it was inter-dental brushes, this year it's a replacement top for the kitchen tap which they seem to think will be a one-size-fits-all kind of deal and i think will be a mess of proprietary standards. Okay, heteros are cutting edge this year, too. (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 27 December 2024 14:47 (one month ago) link

For thousands of years, human knowledge was generally transferred through books, which notoriously do not consist entirely of bullet points, numbered lists, and infographics.

Weirdly, we were able to construct a huge amount of what we know to be the modern world - literature, theology, philosophy, history, political theory, much of science - in this way.

Complete sentences, placed sequentially in paragraphs, with nothing to "break up the text" or "provide some white space." If you got to the bottom of a page and you weren't done describing the topic, you could just keep going on the next page and the reader would actually flip the page and keep going! Can you imagine?

For most of my career a typical technical document was 100-150 pages of closely spaced type. A colleague recently called that "that bad old days."

Nowadays I am advised to cover equally detailed technical topics in 50-75 slides, and I am further advised not to use complete sentences, let alone paragraphs.

I got Twitter in early 2009, linked it to my phone number and "post by SMS" (dunno when they got rid of that) - then I moved back to China, my phone number expired, someone else got it. So when family members tagged me in something this person would get a text message, assume it was spam and reply to it with "FUCK OFF" - which would then be posted as a reply on Twitter. Eventually my mum asked me gently about it and I had to get a new VPN and try to figure out wtf was going on. Not sure any of them believed me when I explained it.

yes, this happens to me sometimes. one time last year a woman was sort of like writhing around while bent forward over a sub in front of the dj booth staring right at my face for the longest time, with one leg propped (seductively?) up on the sub at various points. i did my best to do the polite smile and look away but she was front and center for the last couple songs of my set and approached me after. idk what she said, i only remember her poor bf standing awkwardly nearby watching the whole interaction. it was clear from his body language he wasn't getting any joy from the whole thing
