of the four films here worth being the best of anything: celine and julie by far

devvvine, Friday, 10 May 2024 17:17 (nine months ago) link

haven’t seen all of these. but CHUNKING and SHERLOCK JR are two favorites

brony james (k3vin k.), Friday, 10 May 2024 17:20 (nine months ago) link

Also voted Celine and Julie because I once went to see it with two very talented comics people - Steve Whitaker and Andy Roberts - who are no longer with us, and the film’s insistence on reoccurrence still moves me because of this. It’s also the best Henry James adaptation.

Ward Fowler, Friday, 10 May 2024 17:45 (nine months ago) link

Only one of these would flat out anger me with a win; two others would be a bit of a resigned shrug. But the rest are all varying degrees of very good to great.

It's Tropical Malady tho, clearly

Rich E. (Eric H.), Friday, 10 May 2024 19:00 (nine months ago) link

Titles that should have been: This Is Sátántangó.

clemenza, Friday, 10 May 2024 21:25 (nine months ago) link

I'm still pretty new to this, but choosing between Sherlock Jr, L'Atalante, A Canterbury Tale, Rear Window and Chungking Express is pretty much impossible. (Still not seen Tropical Malady.)

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Friday, 10 May 2024 21:51 (nine months ago) link

The ones I've seen in order from favourite to least favourite (though none were bad):

SHERLOCK JR. (Buster Keaton; USA; 1924) [#101]
L'ATALANTE (Jean Vigo; France; 1924 [#20]
BOYHOOD (Richard Linklater; USA; 2014) [#544]
THIS IS SPINAL TAP (Rob Reiner; USA; 1984) [#390]
DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB (Stanley Kubrick; UK; 1964) [#66]
REAR WINDOW (Alfred Hitchcock; USA; 1954) [#39]
CHUNGKING EXPRESS (Wong Kar-wai; Hong Kong; 1994) [#157]

Haven't yet seen (shamefully)

A CANTERBURY TALE (Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger; UK; 1944) [#325]
CÉLINE AND JULIE GO BOATING (Jacques Rivette; France; 1974) [#142]
SÁTÁNTANGÓ (Béla Tarr; Hungary; 1994) [#100]
TROPICAL MALADY (Apichatpong Weerasethakul; Thailand; 2004) [#162]

This Is Sátántangó.

Béla Tarr's remake of the Rob Reiner classic features a 10 minute uncut take where the band, carrying their accordions, try to find their way to the stage in a rural Hungarian theatre.

Can't rank these until I watch A Canterbury Tale tonight or tomorrow.

Watched it earlier today, if you weren't aware it's up in it's entirety on YouTube

nxd, Thursday, 30 May 2024 14:20 (eight months ago) link

xp you have about 9 hours to watch it, actually

BOYHOOD, for the record

Rich E. (Eric H.), Thursday, 30 May 2024 14:30 (eight months ago) link

A lot of these are great, I loved L'Atalante, Rear Window, and Chungking Express, and didn't hate Boyhood, but voted for Tropical Malady.

The only one of them I still haven't seen Sherlock Jr.. I liked Dr. Strangelove and Sátántango but with reservations

Dan S, Thursday, 30 May 2024 23:19 (eight months ago) link

You just about have time to watch Sherlock Jr still

It's fine. It's just ... zero votes for L'Atalante?!

Rich E. (Eric H.), Friday, 31 May 2024 12:23 (eight months ago) link

I would happily have voted for L'Atlanate if I'd known it would get zero! (I went Rear Window in the end, which feels kinda like a dead vote but not as dead as Kubrick.)

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Friday, 31 May 2024 12:29 (eight months ago) link

Sherlock Junior so much better than Strangelove

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 31 May 2024 12:43 (eight months ago) link

I voted Sherlock. L'Atalante and Canterbury Tale were also under consideration.

jmm, Friday, 31 May 2024 12:52 (eight months ago) link

I wasn't sure, but then yesterday morning I got the sudden inspiration to vote for Boyhood.

I'd have liked to have seen it before tonight, but I was pretty sure it wouldn't sway my Sátántangó vote, and so it proved.

zero votes for L'Atalante?!

Maybe the modern romantics see themselves more in Wong Kar-Wai.
