my little dark age: thread of listening to Boston sports radio

Hi!

So I have this terrible habit most afternoons where I work; I listen to Boston sports radio. I mainly do this for Red Sox news and interviews, but over time I’ve come to appreciate the hyperbole, the ill informed rants, the high emotion. It’s like listening to an argument with my family! In fact, even though most of the hosts aren’t Irish (-American), the appeal is very reminiscent of what Dylan Moran describes in this sketch here:

It keeps my brain engaged on a difficult piece of work because it’s never monotonous. I cannot say this is educational, unless I wanted to learn more about Bill Bellichick’s sex life (I don’t). But for whatever reason, it’s a comforting racket.

Last week, two of the hosts decided to discuss the Hawk Tuah meme. Sample quote:

“Eh, the Kama Sutra’s all about positions”
“I’ve never read it”
“Well I’ve seen the pictures, it’s not very exciting!”

Even listening to George Hook on Irish radio was nothing like this. It’s a lot!

It’s ok, the rage factor is really good for staying alert through long days. Who doesn’t love hearing people talk absolute shit all day for attention?

Also about a week after I started this thread WEEI took an axe to some of their afternoon shows and kept all the most obnoxious ones, which was terrible

Now I mostly listen occasionally for Yankee tears.

I did this for a few years* when I had a car commute out to Needham and did not want to listen to Diane Rehm or ATC, so I'd throw on Dale & Neumy/Holley in the morning or the Big Show on the way home and ooof, that was not good for my psyche. Fortunately I started bike commuting, much better for my health all-around, but did I briefly futz with a portable radio for my Sox/Pats/C's fix? Fuck yeah I did kid.
