i totally buy these. we do have 50 states worth of potato and corn products. even with that superabundance i would buy all the brit snaks if i saw them at the loc-y sup-y. or whatever you call a grocery store.

Freshly made tortilla chips from a Mexican restaurant are really where it's at, but I do love the Walkers prawn cocktail variety which fortunately an English-style pub near me sells.

Love both, but had a bag of these today so it’s an easy vote for (potato) crisps.

A couple of places near us sell Red Hot Blues which are basically blue corn doritos dusted with a little bit of spicy seasoning, and we love them, but cape cod / zapp’s / kettle brand take the win for me.

A bag of zapp’s with a deli sub sandwich and a pickle is almost the ideal (not particularly healthy) lunch

aiui UK potato crisps are little more than delivery systems for a wide variety of flavored adulterations; the potato component could just as easily be a communion wafer and produce the same eating experience. whereas an American tortilla chip consisting only of masa, oil and salt can stand alone and still be enjoyed.

red hot blues are my tortilla chip crack cocaine. my local supermarket stopped selling them a few months ago. the label was still affixed to the shelf with a big gap above it for weeks and weeks, leaving me with false hopes for a restock and a not insignificant little sting every time i went grocery shopping.

Corn gets my vote. Nachos, chilaquiles, dipped in guacamole or salsa, eaten plain - freshly made, packaged, or Fritos. I will choose them over potato chips most days.

I saw a video clip on instagram this week which purported to be from 1981 and had people from I think Newcastle-Upon-Tyne trying new flavours of crisps like prawn cocktail and pickled onion - they weren't into it tbh but also like - that can't have been 1981 right? I vaguely remember 1981 and we had all those crisps already. I remember my mum writing a complaint letter to Hedgehog crisps because she found a metal washer in a packet of crisps and they sent us a whole box of them. that was probably about 1982 tbf

while i love a fresh corn tortilla chip (and a frito tbrr), there is a dish which some vietnamese restaurants here in the US call beef with fried potato, and the places that make it with potato chips (crisps) rather than french fries (chips) -- i mean, there's few things as good as that. plus i just love a good jalapeno cheddar kettle chip with my sandwich

I've googled it and apparently this means nachos but with crisps instead of tortilla chips. so the answer is obviously no, we barely have any Mexican food in Europe, let alone bastardised US adaptations of it. I have never even seen crisps laid out on a plate in an organised way, either they are in a packet or if you're fancy a bowl.

The "loaded fries" at Cambridge United are lukewarm French fries with a handful of grated cheddar straight from the fridge which never has a chance of melting.

these are a good side with some curry/chilli. About as fancy as fries can go without ruining themselves imo.

I made some fucking incredible potato wedges today. Potatoes are sacred vegetables really. I'd worship a potato deity.

Yeah. I mean ngl lately I'm becoming militant in my preference for tahini sauce over humus, but not when it comes to dipping chips. for sure one of my favorite summer meals is tortilla chips with a little bowl of hummus and another little bowl of Andalusian gazpacho, both for dipping.

idk where I stand on potato vs. corn. I think Darragh is basically right (about corn chips from the USA, not capitalism) and I'd rate restaurant or homemade tortilla chips above the bougiest kettle crisp on earth... but def potato chips over commercial corn chips from the supermarket, which is what you get here most of the time. I also have an embarrassing fondness for the 'mystery texture' varieties like hot fries/munchos/monster much/hoops

some you want the straight up yellow bag Lay's Potato Chips, sometimes you want Spicy Nacho Doritos, sometimes you want Habanero kettle chips, sometimes you want thick, unsalted tortilla chips to make amazing nachos

calz what is your wedges recipe? i make them all the time for my kids but they're pretty basic.

for sure one of my favorite summer meals is tortilla chips with a little bowl of hummus and another little bowl of Andalusian gazpacho, both for dipping.

I parboil the wedges for 4 mins from rolling boil or longer if they are biggies in heavily salted water. Then dip them in a bowl of light olive oil mixed with Cayenne/Smoked Paprika/Cumin/Turmeric. Then 14 mins in the air fryer and onto a tray to be warmed up again in the oven, close to when whatever else I'm cooking is ready. It's probably unhealthy but I heard some sous chef on yt saying the key to good mashed potatoes is going heavy with the salt during the boiling, and I have been applying this to wedges as well.

I missed out the dusting with flour after the parboil bit

i just cut up potatoes into wedges and put olive oil, salt, pepper on them and throw them in the oven at 400 until they are browned on the outside and soft on the inside. i mean they are usually done when they are brown on top. easy peasy. sometimes a little cayenne and paprika sprinkled on top.

i never really buy frozen french fries anymore. or "icy wicy chips" as they are known in the u.k.

i did some checking. my Gx10 grandfather who was the mayor of Limerick - and hated in Limerick because he was Irish and a Henry the 8th's stooge - never tasted a potato! they weren't there yet. i'm pre-spud Irish.
