Do you have a "schtick"???

Recently I have taken to wearing a grey flat cap that my girlfriend's father gave me for christmas. I didn't really think much of it (honestyly!), but find that people everywhere comment on it or feel motivated to draw attention to it. Many people clearly assume it is some sort of affectation. Do you wear/do something "different" that marks you out as "eccentric" and "individual", consciously or not?

Shit. Moderator- the thread title is meant to read Do you have a "schtick"? Little help!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 10:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Braids/ponytails. But now every hipster chick in London seems to have them, dammit!

Sometimes I can't tell where the schtick ends and the real me begins.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's a moebius strip

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

(haha "Momius strip")

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

If I strip for you, will you strip for me?

Adam Ant Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm so into my schtick.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hmmm... For a while, my crazy socks were my thing, but lately I've taken to wearing little white socks with cuffs (like a little girl would wear - completely normal really but odd for me).

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Schtick and a g-string made my living.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

"y'areet love? want to see my schtick?"

matthew james (matthew james), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

When I was little they called me "Matt the Hat". Okay, just my dad. But still.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Tracer, you were the drummer in Gene?

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

That cannot be true. I like Tracer.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

My dad was a HUGE Gene fan.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

(not)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

My sister is convinced the singer named his child after her. This is why I know far too much about Gene.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

And to go back on topic, I have been told that being a bitch was my schtick. I'd like to think I'm not that bad, but I could be wrong.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm trying to think of a tongue-twister for "bitch schtick".

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 14 April 2003 14:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

yes

felicity (felicity), Monday, 14 April 2003 14:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

the centerpiece of felicity's schtick is her unerring politesse

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 14 April 2003 14:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Why thank you, Mr. Hand.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 14 April 2003 14:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

For a while I used to wear a beret all the time; then I was into wearing sunglasses wherever I went. . lately I do not have a 'schtick' (I usually call them 'gimmicks') except I think I might get a bright fakey orange tan for the summer.

Mandee, Monday, 14 April 2003 14:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

I occasionally get apoplectic, like Basil Fawlty, or McKay in "Porridge". Were I ever thwarted in a criminal enterprise by any pesky kids, you can well imagine my response.

Not as apoplectic as Cabbage, mind.

My colleagues at work are great, but it says something about them that my regular use of a walkman when not in the office, and occasionally (maybe 5% of the time) listening to stuff on headphones through my computer, is regarded as an eccentricity.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 14 April 2003 17:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

For me the whole self-deprecation thing is mostly schtick. I generally don't think much of myself, but when speaking to people in person I tend to keep that stuff to myself (I wish I had at the last Toronto FAP, though. Maybe Sundar would like me more then). The constant apologizing isn't schtick - I really feel the need to apologize for everything all the time. I realize it's annoying, however, so I'll try to stop.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 14 April 2003 17:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've had multiple defining characteristics over the years, most of which bothered me in that it was that about me that stuck with people. Among them...

I had a wacky demonic high-pitched impish giggle for awhile; to be honest, it came out very late one night when I was on acid and wouldn't go away for like 2 years. People I didn't even know would come up to me and say "Hey! You're that guy! Laugh for us!" and I'm like, "I can't just laugh on command [giggle giggle]" and I couldn't stop and everyone kept spreading the fuckin hype and GEEZ.

I used to wear a bow-tie with my biz suit when I worked in NYC a long time ago. It wasn't totally out of the ordinary, but people commented on it sometime. Oh, and then there are my eyelid tattoos,,,

Skottie, Monday, 14 April 2003 23:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, I am a (mock) meanie. A sarcastabitch. But sweet, y'know? Typically oblique. A Daria with hot-rollered hair.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 14 April 2003 23:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Eyelid tattoos? My god. I hope they're tattoos that look like eyeballs so you can get away with sleeping in public.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 00:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

I dunno, but I love finding out I have a shtick from other people. It's like someone holding a fun house mirror in your face and saying "this is youuuuu."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 00:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

i don't think i have a schtick, but i must do, since i seem to be so easily caricatured. my schtick must be wearing floral shirts and being snobby about anything I apparently don't like.

Bigger schtick: Millar v. jess FITE. I love them both equally, of course.

I have several schticks. No Stich, tho.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 04:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Blaming all personal and professional shortcomings on my parents' divorce. It's funny or offensive depending on the audience. That and screaming racism every time something doesn't go my way. It's amazing how uncomfortable and defensive some people get over that one.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 04:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think my schtick is telling really gross stories (often about myself) with no shame or tact, particularly while people are eating. Its GRATE! I seem to have a knack for being Most Gross. I have two younger brothers, I assume that influenced me. Toilet humour and the like, you know how it is. I have no shame... but I probably should have.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 04:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

Tracer Hand is OTM re felicity, but hasn't covered the waterfront - there's also erudition and probably more than one thing signified by, e.g., "sportsbeagleship" that someone else could probably unpack better

oh yeah, my schticks. to wit, inter alia, pedantic f*ckwitry, intense desire for precision, narcisisstic self-deprecation, ironic distance, casual assumption of intimacy, tossed-off elitism, ersatz criticism.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 04:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

reading maths books in bars, i guess. it's not an affectation, it's just that i always read if i'm waiting for people, and at the moment i'm really into my maths. tends to attract odd looks, though.
