tell me about them, i think i would like to go...

Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil should set the scene. It certainly gave Savannah a boost anyway.

Lots of leafy squares and the cobbled riverfront street is busy after dusk.

Kissin' Kate, Friday, 1 August 2003 08:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm reading a book set in Charleston at the moment - Ariel by Lawrence Block. I have therefore learnt that it is haunted.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Charleston is incredibly pretty. Lots of million dollar colonial homes with incredibly expensive gardens. So, basically you go there to walk and lavishly beautiful homes. The university is out of session right now, so I don't know how much night life is really going on. Oh, and you can visit the old Civil War submarine the Hunley for like 40 bucks. And they have the Yorktown, and other historical military planes/ships.

And take a ghost tour of Charlestown. Most haunted city in America.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

I heart Gareth, but one of these days I'm going to see a post from him saying something like "Circle Pines, Minnesota?" or "Weaverville, California?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 August 2003 12:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

please leave my brain, gareth

(Charleston and environs home to the Gullah culture. Nearby, though they might require a car - Hilton Head, Parris Island, the S.C. river roads, Moncks Corner)

(isn't Circle Pines, the camp at least, in Michigan?)

My friend J___ , who some of you met at the ice skating excursion, lives in Savannah, attending SCAD. He says it's lovely, especially the Spanish moss. I've been meaning to visit forever.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 1 August 2003 17:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

I lived in Savannah for 5 years (went to SCAD), and it's beautiful and pictureque and blah blah blah. Very good range of restaurants for a city its size, drinking is allowed in public (ask your bartender for a go cup). It's a nice relaxing vacation, very easily walkable. Great bed & breakfasts to stay in downtown. I would not suggest visiting before September for heat/humidity reasons.

Brian Miller, Friday, 1 August 2003 19:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

:)

I nearly applied to SCAD after visiting Savannah, but my gf didn't think she could find work there. Savannah is the nicer of the two, Charleston has a weird middle-aged feel to it. However, there's not much to do at night in either place (ghost tours, anyone?). That said, the food is much, much better in Charleston. I think Georgia is a beautiful state to drive through. I realize that sounds like a back-handed compliment, but really it's not.

oops (Oops), Monday, 24 November 2003 09:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

How big is exactly

It's a small city, or a large town, whichever way you want to look at it. I was there in January and the weather was...fine. Maybe a bit chilly at night, but otherwise the temperature was cool and errrrr, temperate. Def. worth a couple of days' visit, though, believe it or not I was looking at living there (well, studying at SCAD) a couple of years ago...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 24 November 2003 14:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

what else is good in the area?

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 28 November 2003 11:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

Check out Ft. Pulaski, an old Civil War fort that made a bit of history. Federal troops proved rifled artillery more effective than old style cannon balls by blowing a hole in a corner of the fort directly across from the Confederates powder magazine. With a clear shot to the door of their powder magazine available to the Federals the Confederates surrendered. And why do they call it the "Civil" War? Isn't that an oxymoron?

Frank Hagan, Friday, 28 November 2003 21:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Savannah is like so cool, she always has the BEST parties and at one I saw the Hi1ton twins, the 8ush twins AND Asht0n Kutch#r. But Charleston, we call her Charly, she's all like the really sexy laid back one, with the pretty eyes. And she's so rich. It is SO not hard to believe they've both scored modelling contracts.

*stops imagining Charleston and Savannah = perfect socialite debutante names*

My family lives down that way, both cities are worth a visit. Savannah is slightly easier to navigate, but Charleston is really stunning if you can avoid crowds. Lots of antique stores and galleries. It was all very, "oh, look- this inlayed mahogany sideboard is only $23,000. Bahahaha!"

Hunter (Hunter), Saturday, 29 November 2003 00:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

So how many days do they require, at minimum, separately and/or together, if you've not only never been to either, you've never been to the South?

Is the whole of each city walkable?

While I can see avoiding the extreme heat/humidity months, are you missing out on the experience if you go when it isn't at least hottish? Like early to mid-March?

If you were going to fly round-trip to one city, and train (drive?) to the other, which would you fly to? It sounds like Charleston is worth more time?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 2 February 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Big portions of my extended family on both sides inhabit these environs. That said, I really don't know jack shit about them except that Charleston has some excellent walking and horse-carriage tours.

TOMBOT, Monday, 2 February 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

I prefer Savannah.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 2 February 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Savannah always strikes me as much more Southern than Charleston. It's one of the few colonial cities left in the South since most of the rest were ravaged in the War of Northern Aggression. Savannah is more old school and more historical, but you can walk the important parts of the city or take a trolley (touristy things, but pragmatic.) If you read "Midnight In the Garden Of Good and Evil" or see the movie, the city might be somewhat more interesting.

I like the location of Charleston better as it is right on the ocean. The Ft. Sumter tour is worth it, I suppose. Walking along the battery and looking around in the historical area of town seems more geared to shopping than history, but it's quaint and nice. The eateries in Charleston are better overall, and it's got better night life. I think both cities have plantations that you can tour, but Charleston has more choices. Charleston has better beaches in the area, too.

I'd fly into whatever city is cheapest. I can't remember how far the cities are to drive between, even though I've done it a few times (not more than 2 hours?) If you go in March it will be great weather--Savannah's St. Pat's Day is an enormous drunkfest, so you might want to avoid that holiday. You will miss nothing if you go in March, unless seeing blooming flowers is really important. The Spanish moss and gorgeous old trees in Savannah will still be there.

You can see each city in a day, although a casual weekend for each is nice.

don weiner, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Charleston is fantastic and has a great nightlife! I have lived there for 11 years. I have also visited Savannah which is also a lot of fun. You should go to Savannah on St. Patrick's Day, they turn the river green! I read several entries that made Charleston and Savannah sound very boring - they are both far from that. There is a lot of history and siteseeing to do, but there are also a lot of newage things to do as well.

Katie Hulse, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Don - how is Savannah more historical? It seems the other way around with all of Charleston's architecture, plantations, gullah and ghost stuff, oldest synagogue ever, etc.?

Also, while I'm not really one for organized tours, I'm not sure what there is to do in Savannah.

That said, Savannah intrigues more, mostly aestheticallly. And I think what I really want to see is one of the Georgia coastal islands. Sapelo seems like the most interesting (read: wild) one that isn't too far away. Cumberland is evidently the best but is twice the distance (unless you're coming from Jacksonville?).

One thing I'm missing - it seems that palm trees are omnipresent in Charleston, but not to be found in Savannah. Does this have to do with ocean proximity or a planting regime or what?

Did I say upthread that I almost applied to SCAD?

Well, I did.

Samuel Glickstein (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 18:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Charleston's downtown is nice (further up the peninsula, though, it's unsightly), and the West Ashley area's a cheap place to stay. Folly Beach is cute and quirky, Sullivan's Island is quiet and has neat curios (Fort Moultrie and a Civil War pen embedded within the highest point on the island, which is next to a playground and covered with bamboo stalks...I can't remember the name of it but it's mentioned in the Poe short story The Gold Bug), Mount Pleasant has an outlet mall that looks like a small town if you're into that sort of thing, and Isle of Palms is an example of quaint architectural uniformity but sports a nice beach. I've only been in downtown Savannah once (although I've been through its outskirts on I-95 on the way to Charleston) and that was a brief Greyhound stop at 1:30 AM on the way to New York.

The new Cooper River Bridge in Charleston should be opening next month and replacing the rotting Grace Memorial Bridge and its less mediocre counterpart, the Silas Perlman.

What is SCAD? I've never heard of it until recently.

I was there in 2010. Perfect city to do a lot of walking in. It was just an overnighter, though, so I didn't get to explore as much as I'd have liked.

If you haven't booked a hotel yet, stay at The Thunderbird Inn.
