So thanks to my brother never using his car, I drive into college most days. And we have to pay for parking. So it's 2 pounds for a 7 times in and out (of the carpark) ticket. But I bought my last one in November and it's still going.

So everyone must have some story like this, and they always seem to involve cards.

I could have made that clearer. The ticket looks like it will work forever. What stuff has malfunctioned for you and thus saved you lots of cash?

Ah this reminds me of my everlasting travelcard. Came out of the machine at Caledonian Road & Barnsbury NLL station with gibberish on it. No date - or at least a Zager & Evans kinda date. The key to using said card was to never, ever put it through a machine. But it entitled the bearer to free travel until some bastard ticket collector swopped it for a standard travelcard. Lasted a good six months.

I'm banking on mine lasting the 4 years. Of course the chances of me lasting the 4 years arent exactly tremendously high.

An ex-gf of mine once worked at an office that used Aroma cwaffeeshop to cater for business meetings. When her boss left, my ex was cleaning out her drawers and found 000s of pounds worth of Aroma vouchers which had been sent to the boss to share with the whole organisation but which she had squirrelled away instead. This discovery led to a year-long gratis binge on expensive cappuccino, froot smoothees and fancy pastries by the two of us.

Old copy machines at berkeley usta let you put scotch tape over the mag strip. The card could thus be read, but not writ! New machines check that they write back the deductions, however.

The Addams Family pinball machine outside "Josiah's" snack bar at Brown would give you as many free games as you wanted if you hit or kicked it in exactly the right spot. We all got very, very good at the Addams Family.

We also got very good at kicking.

I had free dial-up for two years after I cancelled my account. Of course, it was dial-up. Then I just used the neighboring coffeeshop's wireless. Now I have to pay for my internet.

six years pass...

I gave away this giant ikea wardrobe last night. It was really nice, but it was like 9' by 5", and it was left behind by the prior residents, and I was having painters and flooring people come, and it would have been impossible to move, and a huge pain to take the whole thing apart and keep moving the pieces around the apartment for the painters and flooring people and then put together again later (would have needed helpers or pay someone to reassemble). So I gave it away to someone who could dissassemble and pick up. Such a weird experience -- they actually told me they felt GUILTY for taking it. And that made me feel weird for giving it away, even though I got it for free in the first place and it was kind of a relief to not have to deal with it. Hope I get some karmic points at least.

i wish i had a skateboard i could skate away on (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 20 November 2013 22:28 (eleven years ago) link

sorry 9'5', not 5". That would be quite narrow.

Saw that Easons in town was giving away free childrens books today. Didn't see beyond that.
