ethan, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

1. Ghost World 2. Royal Tenenbaums 3. A.I.

(Only 3 worth seeing twice.)

Somewhat further down the list though still interesting... 4. Moulin Rouge (though it became irritating after an hour...but Kylie Minogue--whew!)

Who cares? Lord of the Rings (Well done, I guess, but did nothing for me-- including putting me to sleep, which I wish it had've)

A more hopeless year for movies than it was for music, and I'm not usually the type of crank to say that sort of thing (especially about music). 2001: A Space Odyssey was the best movie about 2001 that wasn't made in 2001.

Mulholland/Ocean 11/Tenenbaums not out over here, and I never got round to George Washington

K-reg, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Should also mention - Last Resort, Piano Teacher, Sexy Beast, and maybe Croupier, You Can Count on Me. Moulin Rouge was stimulating, for about 45 minutes and Blood Vampire was visually stimulating, but only 45 minutes long. But, some of the most memorable things I saw this year were re-releases, TV, documentaries (Gas Attack), promos, even adverts (the first time round).

K-reg, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Freddy Got Fingered was the best movie of 2001.

Kris, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

amelie, memento, ghost world, monsters inc.

keith, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I haven't seen Memento or Ghost World yet. I liked The Man Who Wasn't There. I think I saw Traffic at the beginning of this year, so I guess that counts as a movie I liked this year. The bit at the end with the oversaturated reds and the kids playing baseball and brian eno soundtracking was particularly moving. I didn't like A.I. or Moulin Rouge much. Lord of the Rings was alright. There was this really rubbish movie with travolta about hackers where you saw halle berry's breasts? that was a terrible movie. The title escapes me.

Shows you how closely I pay attention--I forgot to list 'Mulholland Drive,' which a mere few weeks ago I told someone else was my #1 (!) (though it's actually probably #3), and 'Josie & the Pussycats,' which was pretty great in parts too. I was mesmerized by 'A.I.' on first viewing, though yeah, admittedly a little less so second time around, but it still blew me away overall (and I didn't hate the ending either, though it did creep me out).

s woods, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

1. Our Lady of the Assasins 2. Lord of the Rings 3. Ghost World 4. Gosford Park 5. Hedwig and the Angry Inch 6. Spy Kids 7. Moulin Rouge

Flawed, but great performances: Donnie Darko, In the Bedroom.

Disappointing: The Royal Tenenbaums

Arthur, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

None of which were anywhere near as good as You Can Count on Me and Before Night Falls, which came out here last year. Not a very good year for movies, really.

Arthur, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Amelie, Hedwig, and Ghost World were my favs.

Honda, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

3. Baby Boy
4. Band A Part
5. Ocean's 11
5. Tailor of Panama
5. Spy Game
5. Waking Life
6. The Score
6. Vanilla Sky

Josh, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

1. Amélie 2. some other films.

Omar, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oops, and Man Who Wasn't There, which I would put at 3 and bump the rest down.

Josh, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

1) Ghostworld
2) American Pie 2
3) Asoka
4) A.I
5. LOTR
6. Miss Congeniality

Not neccesarily in that order.

james, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

(Tailor of Panama!! I'm speechless, Josh.)

(And not for once in a time-to-tease-Josh way, either...)

What did you like about it?

mark s, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Still need to see The Royal Tenenbaums, Gosford Park, Monster's Ball, and Black Hawk Down. So far, it's looking like...

01 Amores Perros
02 Mulholland Drive
03 In the Bedroom
04 Ghost World
05 The Man Who Wasn't There
06 Ocean's 11
07 Memento
08 Hedwig and the Angry Inch
09 Amélie
10 Vanilla Sky

Andy K., Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I liked Ocean's 11. I don't remember what else I saw this year. I still haven't seen the Royal Tennenbaums. The worst movie of the year was hands down Vanilla Sky. Fuck you, Tom Cruise, for wasting my time like that.

Ally, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Mark, basically I thought it was a good spy movie only with EVIL. Well, OK, not EVIL, but having the players more corrupt was a refreshing twist. Especially Brosnan. And not corrupt in an I-am-so-evil-and-successful way, but I-am-a-bad-man-and-also-have-to-be-bad-to-cover-my-fuckups-a-lot way. And I liked the sub-plot with Rush and Curtis' home life.

Josh, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

1/ waking life 2/ ghost world 3/ american pie 2 4/ yi-yi 5/ man who wasnt there 6/ cure

I said what mine were when we did this a couple of weeks ago.

N., Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Saw Amelie last night and it was the worst good time I've had at a movie in a long, long while, possibly ever. Private reasons. It's definitely an enjoyable film, but I couldn't enjoy it.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Piles?

N., Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

wow, ye've seen a lot of films. the three iv'e seen, in order:

1) Harry Potter
2) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
3) Lord of the Rings (ick)

Maria, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Memento? *checks tattooos* Oh yeah, that one rawked the casbah. My friends recommended Funny Games after I mentioned Happiness and Man Bites DAWG.

helenfordsdale, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Piles?

Nothing physical, my friend.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Mulholland Drive. Head and shoulders above all else save Amelie.

Simon, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Vanilla Sky is the worst movie I've seen in such a long time I cant remember what I might have recently disliked as much (well, I found it laughable, so I was in a good mood when coming out of the cinema - I could not leave right after the accident as I should have done since I was on a date, kinda; at least *she* hated it too!).

Oh yeah, it was Orgazmo.

Simon, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

What a fantastic year for movies:

1. Crouching Tiger
2. Harry Potter
3. Ocean's Eleven
4. Cowboy Bebop: Knockin on Heaven's Door
5. Lord of the Rings
And there's probably a dozen or so I haven't really ranked: Shrek, Monsters, Inc., Final Fantasy, A.I., Memento and probably some other non-CG movies too.

Vinnie, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'll opt for Battle Royale, for sheer exhilarating ultraviolent gameshow bodycount shock value fun. The Breakfast Club set in a slaughterhouse. Or something.

Trevor, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'll second the Battle Royale vote - I might consider going to see Lord of the Rings if it had detonation collars in it but it doesn't and therefore it's just bunkum and nothing else.

Jonnie, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Chuck and Buck. A bit too close to home...

Dickon Edwards, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The Film of Twenty-First Century, so far - Mulholland Drive. It wasn't even supposed to be a film.

K-reg, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

it is without a doubt Lord of the Rings, followed by Together, then probably Crouching Tiger, Amelie... i really wanted to see Ghost World but didn't get to which was a chiz. i don't actually go to the cinema that much, one of my new year resolutions is to go more often.

katie, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

chuck and buck was 2000 shurely?

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I saw one film last year and that was Crouching Tiger Hidden dragon which I didn't particularly enjoy, ho hum, I'm just not a cinema person.
