Oof! "The big clubs" have entered. It's third round day. Magic. Romance. Derek Mountfield and Paul Allen on Radio 5 previews.

the pinefox, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

bah! stinky shearer fucks up our day. and its not the last time newcastle have been harbingers of destruction for us....94/95?

what a silly club they must be.

ambrose, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Palace out, yes, but Gillingham through.

(at least Ned Raggett will be interested in this!)

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Sunderland 1 WBA 2 (snigger)

stevo, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I hope this is the dawning of a new era for West Brom. I do.

Peter Miller, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

at least Ned Raggett will be interested in this!

Oh hell yeah. Combine this with the fact we're back at mid-table and all is well. :-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Spurs will win it this year. Though, I am not looking forward to Wednesday night.

james, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

the Welsh dragons Cardiff City have dumped Leeds out !

DJ Martian, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

James: you're Chelsea, yes? You always beat Tottenham, and I don't think this run will end just yet. You'll win the Worthington Cup, I'm convinced.

(mind you I was convinced you'd beat Southampton, ad nauseam ...)

Not one mention was made of the violence at Cardiff on Sky Sports, and Sam Hammam provoking the home fans was spoken of as a kind of lighthearted sportsmanlike gesture. I can't help thinking there's something very wrong with this - Alan Green was bang OTM on 5 Live.

Robin Carmody, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Terrifically exciting stuff at Villa Park. I'm not exactly fond of Man U, but am I starting to understand now how 70s/80s LFC left the neutrals breathless and rummaging through drawers for superlatives; van Nistelrooy's late poachery was very Rush-like.

FAC3 defeat for Leeds could be cause to invoke Very Old Footballing Cliche (you know which one), and for it genuinely to be borne out this time.

Good draw for R4, heh-heh.

Michael Jones, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Sam Hamman should be banned from football, the man's a menace.

Manyoo's comeback was best exemplified by my mate the G (west ham fan, hates the reds) when Van Nistelrooy put in the third his arms went up, a cheer started in his throat and then died out into "noooooooooooo" horribly exciting wasn't it?

chris, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"Leeds can now concentrate on the league" = Very Old Footballing CLiche heard five times yesterday.

Pete, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The Man U game was horrific! That's the last time I spend eight hours down the pub. I had a five pound bet with my mate Stu that Villa would win, and after the own goal went in he settled up. I vividly recall saying to him "Are you sure mate? Man U could still get 3 back". Ho ho ho. Then I got home turned on the telly and it was 3:2. I nearly died. Then the phone rang and all I could hear was my mate laughing. He'll get his money back... wrapped round a brick. Grrrr.

West Ham were a bit fortunate. That Macca goal disallowed for offside was NOT offside. With a one goal deficit from the outset I think we could have been on the receiving end of a Leeds-like embarassment.

Trevor, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I told the G that I thought your boys were lucky Trevor and he scoffed somewhat, but I thought the Silkmen played very well, and you're right, it was onside. Young Joey is looking stronger by the week though, is he going to Japan? or will David Dunn be the surprise inclusion? Trevor Sinclair should go, just for the options he gives on the left win.

chris, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I thought Alan Smith was very unlucky to be sent off yesterday. As I was explaining to an obstinate friend, he didn'e really swing his arm he just happened to , er, catch someone in the face with it. Van Nistelrooy's first goal last night was sublime but it was so infuriating to see them do what they had done to us.

Jonnie, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

There are no definite contenders for England places in our squad at the moment, but I'd say there are five strong hopefuls. James (England's number 3), Cole, Carrick, Sinclair, and Defoe. If Defoe misses out this time, he's a definite inclusion come 2006. David Platt was right when he said there's no aspect of his game which is flawed - and he can only get better.

As you say Chris, Sinclair's versatility on the wing makes him a great asset, and his work rate is unparalleled. Plus I think he's hit a career best vein of form at the moment.

Personally I rate Carrick higher than Cole, he's a more physical player, and more solid in midfield. He's less likely to lose the ball, whereas Cole has a Di Canio-like tendency to go on those mazy runs which are a joy to watch, but ultimately result in him being dispossessed.

Trevor, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Jonnie is right, Smith was trying to push the defender off him, it happens all the time, but not everyone has Smith's reputation (or the misfortune to come up against someone so good at clutching their face and screaming).

Moncur was unlucky to go too, I thought he'd just get a yellow as he didn't seem so involved in the fracas as much as the bald Macclesfield player who only got a yellow for running over and taking a swing.

I know what you mean about Carrick Trevor but he doesn't grab the attention as much as Joey, but then Sven and Tord can probably see through such things, and then they'll take Dunn. James should definitely go though, but at the expense of who? Wright I suppose?

chris, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think Wright's the most obvious candidate to miss out, for sure.

And Smith has every right to feel aggrieved. There's a definite impression that the referee capitulated to appease the hostile, animalistic Cardiff crowd. Not that it worked though.

And it's not often I see Moncur unjustifiably booked. I guess Macca fans would say it was karma. The amount of times I've been at Upton Park and said of the man, "He should have been booked for that!" after the umpteenth two footed flying tackle aimed at opposing player's head.

Someone down the pub said that yellow cards cannot be appealed, only red. But if the second yellow led to the sending off, then surely this can be appealed, no?

Another pub question that had me stumped was televised match money - is this split 50/50 between the teams, or does the visiting team get diddly squat?

Trevor, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

It's 50-50, hence the switching of ties for some of the small teams to get more receipts.

I couldn't help but cheer Man U as those goals went in either. I felt very dirty afterwards mind, even though I do hate Aston Villa. Gregory's face really was a picture.

Martin, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I will grant Utd the spoils of victory, if only because the sight of Neville, P heading into his own goal was so amusing. I don't think I will laugh so much again all year.

But what about the irresistible striking partnership of Anelka and Owen?

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

A beautiful combination of pace and elegance, that's what they are Edna.

Trevor Brooking, I love the man but he really is the most biased summariser on tv or radio, the execrable Jonathon Pierce included.

chris, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The new BBC digital gizmos allowed us to watch the Neville og again and again and again....

Jonnie, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"It's 50-50, hence the switching of ties for some of the small teams to get more receipts."

But surely gate receipts and television money are two seperate things?

Trevor, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ah, but anything can happen in the cup can't it.

Jonnie, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

the new digital gizmo also lets you have the radio5 commentary instead of the Motson one, unfortunately Greeny and co are about a second ahead of the action and it gets a little confusing.

chris, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

unfortunately Greeny and co are about a second ahead of the action

HOW CAN THIS BE???

N., Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

someone with techy knowledge may be able to tell you N. but unfortunately I can't, all I know is that we switched it off when we knew that the shot about to enter Schmeichel's hands stayed there and didn't bounce out in comedy fashion, before we saw it happen.

chris, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Summat to do with streaming, isn't it? The same thing happens on that Fifa football game for the Playstation, when Motson gushes "Brilliant shot!" before it's barely left the player's boot. It's encouraging to hear that the real Motson is just as fallible as his AI counterpart.

Trevor, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"HOW CAN THIS BE???"

All live broadcasting has some kind of delay on it, surely? To avoid transmission of swearing and the like; I presume R5 and BBC1 just aren't in sync. Funny though - in my experience the radio commentary is usually a fraction behind the telly. Perhaps there's an explanation in terms of the routing of the signals (with all that digital interactive jiggery-pokery, maybe the TV sig goes through a battery of latency-stricken processors before leaking out to the analogue unwashed).

They manage to get it right for R3/BBC2 prom simulcasts though (hey - taking sides: NICAM vs FM).

Michael Jones, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Did anyone see Liverpool the other day? the papers made a huge deal of the Anelka-Owen thing? Was it justified?

Ronan, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I thought Chris said "you would need someone with TETCHY knowledge" and thought "N. has that IN SPADES". Until I read again.

Owen + Anelka (two parts of my new dream threesome) absolutely majestic on Saturday, the only disappointment being Owen hitting the crossbar when he should have nabbed a hatrick. Hopefully Liverpool have now turned the corner and will commence a magnificent unbeaten run til the end of the season.

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yes they had to have a bad patch sometime. but it's over now and they will pick up in time to stuff Man U for the 4th time in a row. I hope.

Ronan, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

My HOW CAN THIS BE?? was a joke predicated on the idea that Chris meant Alan Green et al. actually had privileged access to the FUTURE.

If we are going down the serious transmission lag talk route then I will point out to Mike that Chris has digital TV, which introduces a whopping great lag over analogue. Mind you, he seems to be implying that he's getting the reafio through it as well, so it's not quite as simple as that. All depends on Sky's feeds maybe? Or does the lower bandwidth requirement of radio translate into faster delivery at the satellite -> box stage? I don't know. All I know is that when I flick between different channels covering the same live broadcast on my digital cable, there are HUGE differences. That used to apply when I was on analogue too, though. But yeah, my trannie is miles ahead of the TV, anyway. This digital lag thing is a bit of a step back, isn't it? The time beeps will become ass if digital radio takes over. They can't introduce a compensatory 'preemptive' timing either, as it's all subject to various vagaries, apparently.

N., Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

are you the meat in their sandwich edna? or is it Jari limanen playing just behind them? that would be awesome, unfortunately I don't think Thompson has the balls to try it.

chris, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

and yes I do indeed have digital, on certain things (especially footie) BBC1 offers interactive options for digital viewers, yesterday they included having the standard commentary, 5 live commentary or just crowd noises; watching the west ham game highlights; a selection of stats and something else that I can't remember. But yeah, the radio 5 commentary was marginally ahead of the action, where I'm sure if I'd put the radio on it would have been slightly ahead due to the lag that N. mentions above.

chris, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"Hopefully Liverpool have now turned the corner and will commence a magnificent unbeaten run til the end of the season."

Easy win over lower-division opposition in a cup-tie != turning the corner, in my view. Perhaps more meaningful for teams who are really struggling (i.e. Everton), but we shall see.

I, for one, will be astonished if Liverpool win at Old Trafford. A high-scoring draw with multiple injuries/dismissals the preferred option, natch.

Michael Jones, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

*snigger* - he said 'commence'

N., Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

It's not the mere fact of their beating Birmingham that I find encouraging, more the signs that the midfield were beginning to gel again - something they haven't done for about a month. Murphy and Gerrard seem to have bucked their ideas up a bit. Liverpool have beaten United in - what? - their last four matches, home and away? I think a United win would be the real shock there.

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I find Edna's shock at Michael's shock that a win for Man Utd would be a real shock rather shocking.

Trevor, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"Liverpool have beaten United in - what? - their last four matches, home and away? I think a United win would be the real shock there."

Oh, come on. With Man U in this form, no victory of theirs can be considered a surprise. I know you have this theory that LFC now have United's number, but (possibly aside from that Murphy winner at Old Trafford last season) I don't think Liverpool have ever* successfully tackled a United side purring along like this.

(* - I mean 'ever' in the Sky Sports/Premiership 1992-was-Year-Zero sense that I usually detest)

Michael Jones, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think the United return to form is a bit of a myth. Van N is on fire, yes, but they've had a month-long run of pretty easy matches and still leaked goals at a a careless rate (do they still have the second worst defensive record in the premiership?). I can't see Hyypia and Henchoz conceding 3 goals in the last 10 minutes of a game.

(I will, of course, now be proved wrong with hilarious! consequences)

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"I can't see Hyypia and Henchoz conceding 3 goals in the last 10 minutes of a game."

I can - if I close my eyes real tight and think happy thoughts. Anyway, my plan is for H+H to be off the field by the 80th minute, possibly in a nearby hospital.

I think this "Man U revival is a myth" myth is dangerous nonsense. They walloped Xmas leaders Newcastle after all.

Michael Jones, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Robin, I support Spurs. We never beat Chelsea, which is why I'm not looking forward to Wednesday. Though I think it'll be a 0-0 draw!

jel, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm not looking forward to the 4th round, when in all probability I'll get to sample Stamford Bridge's somewhat unique interpretation of the word "hospitality".

Trevor, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

manyoo fan here at work just admitted that without Van N (or horseface as he likes to call him) they would be struggling again, although I would argue that they miss Giggs more, I mean, I know he wasn't there yesterday but they did struggle until they clicked towards the end (when Van N came on for Cletus the slack jawed yokel)

I'd have to say that Liverpool had their number eallier in the season, but yeah, they weren't purring at all, hmmm. I think Sunday's game at the Library could be rather important.

chris, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ruud Van Nistelrooy is Scooby-Doo.

Jonnie, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ooh - just remembered: Liverpool's game in hand is this Wednesday night at Southampton. They can't go top (without a 6-0 win), but it's jolly important all the same. If LFC really are BACK, Anelka and Owen will tear the Saints to little bits. I just love these false crescendoes...

Apologies to the Pinefox in his absence for encouraging the sort of chat on this thread that should really be on the other thread.

Michael Jones, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Then Man Utd go to Southhampton on Sunday. If they slip up following a Liverpool rout it will be super galling for Man U fans. Of course, it could all go the other way. Interesting.

N., Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

of course, Nicky D really should tell us which premiership team he supports here, shouldn't he children?

chris, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Owen = injured and probably out for Wednesday, arse.

But Trevor, manyoo are supposed to be upping their bid for Paolo to 3mil, will Glenn sell? should he?

chris, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I was quite alarmed by Arsenal's defensive slip-ups at Watford. The Arsenal-Liverpool soap opera continues! I predict a draw on Sunday, and Arsenal to win the cup tie 3-2.

Will, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"But Trevor, manyoo are supposed to be upping their bid for Paolo to 3mil, will Glenn sell? should he?"

Well Chris, it depends on whose perspective you're looking at it from, I suppose. If I were Paulo, I'd much rather stay at the club which put faith in me and resurrected my career from the ashes than be a glorified benchwarmer for Ferguson's corporate giants.

At least at West Ham Paulo knows he is guaranteed regular first team football, which he knows he'll never get at Man Utd.

Saying that, the man is rapidly approaching the age of 34, and how many of us would begrudge a player nearing the twilight of their professional career getting a final opportunity to play European Championship football?

If I were Roeder, I'd want such an influential and popular player to end his days playing at the club. There's also the risk that if Paulo goes, it's puts more pressure on Roeder to release the likes of Sinclair and there's always the danger that others may follow in their wake. The younger players definately look up to Paulo, make no mistake.

My personal feeling is, we've had the best out of him, he lacks the edge and the goal-scoring proclivity he displayed when we first bought him. But if he does go, it'll be a fond farewell. No true fan could resent his departure to Man Utd after witnessing the magic he's brought to Upton Park.

Trevor, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

As a slight aside, does anyone else share my feeling that Man Utd are rapidly becoming the new Microsoft, what with their tendency for buying up the most talented players from other teams and then rarely utilising them?

Trevor, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Should Man Utd be split up?

N., Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yes, but then saying that they'll only go on and win their case on appeal to the House of Lords at the last minute.

Trevor, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Really - I go away for a few minutes, and everyone starts talking Premiership on the FA Cup thread! When the continuing relevance of Premiership thread is *clearly signalled* by its titular reference to sad Liverpool failures.

3rd round of FA Cup is NOT OVER. Not by some distance. Most important issues: still to be resolved.

the pinefox, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I take it you're referring to Spurs vs Norwich PF? I predict extra time and a Teddy goal with mere minutes left.

chris, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

What?!? We've got Coventry you lemon - Chelsea (boo, hiss) have the mustard boys.

Jonnie, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

sorry, got momentarily confused, let's call it the Dunst effect. but my prediction remains, except it'll be evenn closer.

chris, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

These days Coventry away probably = easier than Norwich away. But neither is easy for the likes of Mauricio Tarricco.

the pinefox, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

plus he'd get a warm welcome from those burglar shooters, due to his tractor boy associations.

chris, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

three weeks pass...
Time to revive this thread. What's happened at Upton Park?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Don't suppose we'll hear from Dr C for a few days now (until he sobers up).

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 6 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

what a fantastic game, all action stuff, incident packed. Best, well, most entertaining game I've seen in ages.

chris, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I am now sober as a judge, Billy, but still basking in the glow of turfing the Hammers out of the 'proper' cup. Who wants to win the Littlewoods anyway? Our name is on the FAC - I'd better practice singing 'Abide with Me'.

Actually last night's beer was darts-related. I didn't even see the game, but I did run into a group of WH fans at Waterloo on the way home. Oh, the looks on their faces!

Dr. C, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Quite frankly Chris, I'm sick as a parrot. Serves me right for drinking Export. The one consolation is that I'd been saying Jermaine should get more starts for ages. I think the wobbles started to show when we were forced to bring the woeful Todorov into play (no Paulo, no Kanoute). Hasselbaink looked deadly with every touch, as always.

All thrilling stuff for the neutrals I suppose. At least it wasn't to Grimsby or Northampton this time. Ho hum.
