Are you still biting them and isn't it time you stopped?

Has anyone seen my bladdy nailclippers?!? I remember noticing them in a clever and/or unusual place just before xmas and thinking, "I bet I can't find them when I need them"

mark s, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

yes. no.

di, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I don't bite. I pick.

Ronan, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

either once a week or once a year, depending.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I clip very regularly, I'd say every two weeks.

when i screw up on guitar because of them. what's the appeal of biting nails?

Maria, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Maria speaks the truth - I can't do a damn thing with long fingernails (especially on the frets). Without the nails, my fingers glide & slide like greased pigs. (Still ain't hitting the notes I'd like, but, hey, glide & slide.)

David Raposa, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

My fingernails are titanium. I might break a tooth if I were to try to bite them off. Using clippers means I have to use great force upon those tiny levers, which results in fingernail fragments as high speed and highly dangerous projectiles.

Melissa W, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

there is no appeal to biting nails. its a habit thats hard to break.

di, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ronan's right: a lot of people pick - or tear - rather than bite, and only use teeth to rip that final stubborn bit off. It has it's micropleasures, but mostly it's just nerves/something to do with your hands. And it is the only New Year resolution I've ever kept to: gave up in Jan 2001 and now have two hands worth of neatly clipped nails (mind you, they're still a strange shape and texture and will never look normal after the near three decades of tearing...)

Mark Morris, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

i endend up tearing, as the clippahs didn't surface

pic in recent fortean times of man who hadn't cut nails on one hand for [35? i forget] years (the other was normal, and he was dressed in a neat suit). Hideous filthy curling talons, four feet in length even when *UN*straightened. He has in fact recently cut them, as he was having problems sleeping and breathing, terrible back-ache and posture strain and heart action...

so think on!

Need for cigarette=nail picking going into overdrive.

Ronan, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Cut them when I notice they are long, so like every 3 weeks?...I always find that the nails on my left hand are better cut, due to the difficulty of using scissors with one's left hand. I am too much of a hypochondriac to bite my nails.

james, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I've never really understood how to bite my nails. If they are long enough to get my teeth into them them biting just causes a jagged mess or else rips down to the corners and that hurts. I cut mine with clippers every two weeks or so - as soon as there's something to clip. Long nails are revolting on men.

N., Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Some men look good with long nails when in costume.

Honda, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

my nails are far too thick to bite, and it's a disgusting habit anyway. i cut them twice a week, because they grow so fast. my toenails only need cutting about once every two months. why is this? do they wear down in shoes or something?

michael, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I said THINK ON!!!

Nails on guitar hand - fortnightly. Other hand - fortnightly or monthly depending on laziness factors. Feet - ummm.. not often enough.

electric sound of jim, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

once or twice a week and i carry my clippers around almost everywhere. i feel really uncomfortable once i realise i want them cut.

elizabeth anne marjorie, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

My mouth's the only nail cutter I need. Oh, except for those hard-to- reach toenails.

Vinnie, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm a biter not a fighter. And as with all things, the pain is part of the pleasure.

Andrew L, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Guys who cut their nails once every two or three weeks should wise up and realize that men should have short nails and anything else looks awful. Unless you're a drag queen.

Sean, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Some people's nails don't grow very fast, Sean. There's nothing to cut on mine if I leave them only a week.
