yes, it's that time.

is it even possible? has anyone done it? best way to go about it? i have resolved to NOT - this time around - just get on a car/bus/plane/train and let the chips fall where they may. i actually want a home to move into when i get there. and we're talking rent, not own.

(also what's the average rent in the pacific northwest/seattle area? brian, i'm looking in yr general direction.)

First thing you do is send all your music to me. I will give it a good home. I might even pay you for it!

Second thing you do is get in touch with Brian Macdonald, who will give you all the suggestions and goodness you need.

Garsh. I'm really bad at summing up housing prices, but I'll say this: Seattle proper is probably the most expensive place in the Northwest to find a place to live -- thankfully though, it isn't too expensive compared to other known U.S. cities/centers. Right now, it's about the same general prices as San Diego, CA.. which means slightly cheaper than L.A., definitely cheaper than the Bay Area, New York, Boston, etc. But probably more expensive than the rest of the country. A single bedroom appt. would probably cost you about $700 or so in the hippest areas of Seattle. Portland is bit cheaper, Vancouver BC as well (then again, the whole balance of Canadian money works differently anyway), Olympia even cheaper than the previous, etc.

Just don't live in the outskirts... avoid cities like Kent, Renton, Edmonds, Everett, Fife, etc. NOT a good introduciton to the Northwest.

I won't lie about the currently crappy job market up here, though. In fact, I'd say that would be your biggest concern.. then again, I don't know how bad it is where you're coming from.

Well, I gave you my number... so we can talk about the rest, if ya like.

one year passes...
If I have to explain to yet another fucking asshole landlord that, no, I don't have a credit report cos I is Bri'ish and no, I don't have a job yet but I do have plenty money to pay for an apartment, I WILL fucking KILL someone! Why oh why must I plead and beg and prostate myself before these utter wankers in order to secure a roof and four walls for myself and the lady? The last guy just turned away from us and started taking shots of the place with his fancy schmancy digital camera, so blatantly uninterested in renting to us. MURDER!

(well, uh, update i guess. Northwest is even cheaper. San Diego is balls expensive. Ok, back to your regularly programmed schedule)

prostate=prostrate

how big of a place do you guys need btw?

Good question. I guess a one bedroom with enough space for me to put all my computer junk. We thought (wrong?) that Berkeley (as opposed to SF) landlords might be more amenable to a couple of (nice! qualified!) new arrivals who don't YET have jobs (one of whom has GREAT credit). Might you conclude, as many seem to, that we should try Lake Merritt/Piedmont? Would it really be any different over there?

Better news- I (finally!) have an interview tomorrow!

(sidetrack- San Diego. Is there a "there" there? I always thought it sounded great, but lots of people up here keep telling me otherwise)

I remember planning a move to Minneapolis in 1994, calling up an apartment finders service and them sending me photocopies of listings in the mail.

I don't have much help for you dayo, but thank God for the Internet.
