Gage-o, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Sorry, but what exactly is deep or interesting about a painting of Bob Dylan fucking a robot? It's not like he hasn't been parodied and self-parodied for the past 30 yrs anyway. Doesn't seem interesting, daring, shocking or anything. walking into a first year art student's hovel, I would not be surprised in anyway to find a painting of bob dylan fucking a robot. There's nothing wrong with it, but it doesn't send the mind reeling.

ethan, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Why not have him being fucked by a robot. I'd find that surprising for sure ( and so would Bob probably).

Billy Dods, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"Why not have him being fucked by a robot."

The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind.

Bob fucking a robot makes more thematic sense to me. It could be perceived as a sardonic indictment of his transition from accoustic folk to electricity-driven rock.

Trevor, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ethan: if the inevitable backlash = my one critical comment after 20- odd overwhelmingly supportive comments, then cry me a river. I think you'd be onto something more interesting if the idea had actually outraged anyone.

fritz, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Steady on, fritz. I think ethan was only joking.

N., Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

didn't mean to sound so harsh, sorry. and I do want to see the finished product if Ethan can scan it.

fritz, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

i planned to sell the painting at my yard sale on thursday but i talked to my cousin last night and he's so in love with the very concept that he wants to buy it from me, i'm happier with this because it goes to someone i know (it was hard to part with in the first place) and so i'll have it for another two weeks or so, i'll try to take a photo of it in that time and post it here.

ethan, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I am offended by your cliched view of librarians! Slip me a bundle of cash money and you can scan what you like, but if the library manager sees what you are doing, I know nothing.

james, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I love the fact that someone said "what is so shocking about Bob Dylan fucking a robot?". That, in itself, has made life much better. Bob Dylan should be dressed as, or being prodded on by, a pirate.

Gage-o, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

no, what I said was there is nothing shocking about a painting of bob dylan fucking a robot.

bob dylan actually fucking a robot = a different story.

fritz, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

degrading pop-cult sacred cows is a dead end in art, cause the cows aren't so sacred and pop-cult is degradation in itself.

dylan fucking a robot is just a hipster version of one of those edward hopper-ripoff prints of james dean, marilyn monroe & humphrey bogart together in a diner.

fritz, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

nobody ever said i was trying to shock anyone and i in fact did it for the exact purpose of DELIGHTING everyone, which it has with the exception of bitter been- there-done-that art school bastards scrambling to reveal a simple novelty object as, gasp, a novelty object!

ethan, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

You asked people to comment on your idea, Ethan. If everybody else is delighted by it, who gives a fuck what I think?

I was interested in discussing it as a real piece of art without downgrading it to "novelty object" status (and it doesn't seem much different than a lot of current "fine art") - my mistake.

fritz, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

fine art? it started as a joke with tom on aim! ('but all great art started as a joke blah blah blah')

ethan, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I did a cartoon once with a side-by-side comparison of Bob Dylan and a monkey.

The impetus was the song "Buckets of Rain" from Blood on the Tracks, which includes the lyric "Little red wagon, little red bike, I ain't no monkey but I know what I like."

So I drew a picture of a monkey, and then a picture of Bob Dylan, with little arrows describing various points of difference: has a tail, is a folk singer; likes bananas, plays the harmonica.

Maybe he should have been fucking the monkey. I dunno.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago) link

It had been invented, it's just that no one was allowed to ever talk about it in any way shape or form...ever.

Isn't it interesting that throughout time, and extending even to this day, every artist's conception of "the future" involved a lot more:

1. tight shiny clothing
2. partial nudity
3. patent leather

than we see currently?

To avoid getting completely off topic, Ken C: I suppose if you were going to reference a Dylan song in a Dylan/Robot copulation painting, it would have to be Just Like a Woman, so well done. But since I love that song so much I'll suggest changing the lyric to:

"and I would not feel so all alone, EVERYBODY must fuck robots!"

How is it I never weighed in on this important question?

The obvious answer to the thread question is: yes, by all means create such a painting, or as many as you like, then douse it (or them) with lighter fluid and (carefully) set it (or them) on fire in the privacy of your home, while never speaking of it (or them) to anyone of its (or their) existence or demise, as being too personal a vendetta to soil by contact with the sane general population.
