Sunday SUSSED Strikes Back!

February 10th, The Cellar, Oxford - 8pm - 12.30pm, £2 entry. Just like it was but better venue, better drinks, better music (ahem). Oh yeah and on a Sunday BUT it's on the high street so if you leave at half ten you can get back in time for the last tube even! And even if you don't it's slightly less brutal than the 2 AM finish of the previous event.

People coming up earlier on Sunday might even find themselves boozing with members of Sussed staff!

Tom, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Actually posting this thrilling news at 11 at night was a bad idea.

Tom, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh go on then, I'll go. How I miss those DREEMING SPIRES ect. I would vaguely like to take the Monday off and EXPLORE round Oxford for some reason - I do not know why as surely it cannot compare to the beauty of Headington B2 Budgens Express. And I bet they would not let me in the good bits cos I am a pov. I would like to place a request for someone to play LIFE by ATV please.

Sarah, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

does everyone here except me have some kind of oxford connection. i went to oxford once. it was shit.

gareth, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

same here gareth

mark s, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Hey! Stop that right now! I've lived here for eight years and it has never been shit....

(calms down)

Erm, what didn't you like about it, Gareth and Mark S?

MarkH, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

i went there once for four years and all i got wuz a degree in maths and philosophy markH

mark s, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I've never been there and I didn't even get that much.

Ronan, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

My Oxford connection = have been to Sussed, Luxurious Islip Pad and Luxurious Headington Pad and eaten sossages and burgXoRs. And drank lots of beer. In this respect Oxford is BLEDDY GRATE! I have never been to the Big Houses though. Who's going to be playing records then?

Sarah, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The usual suspects. I have been incubating a whole nu playlist though.

Tom, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Dude, perhaps we could all stay at my Luxurious Islip Pad and then spend the next day among the Dreemin' Spirez. We could buy some fetid dead animals in the covered market then take a punt to, um, somewhere. Or Go To A Pub. Or get on one of those tour buses. Oh, fuck this. I left there because it was so dull, FGS.

alix, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oxford has nothing to recommend it. Except Sussed.

Tom, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I have broken Tom's code; the next Sussed playlist will feature Incubus and Linkin Park!

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Eh? Are we to have the pleasure of Mr Perry's presence in England again? Or is there some foul plot to corrupt Tom's mind afoot?

RickyT, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ignore last post. Brain switched off.

RickyT, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

If you are willing to pull together a collection to buy me a ticket, I'll stop in at Sussed. I'll even do my special version of "In The End".

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yay, ILE's back.

If I can persuede the goddess Sara to come I'll be there... ah, fuck it, I'll come anyway. Like I'm ever in first thing Monday anyway.

Graham, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Lixi - this sounds like a plan. I would like to buy some fetid dead widgeon. Sure it may be dull if you have to LIVE there but a DAY TRIP could be FULL of fun and adventure and also SURPRISES - well it would all be surprising to me I admit.

Sarah, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

We can go to The Greatest Charity Shop On Earth* and other such fun. Okay, I'll try not to be at work. Mang, this will be totally biryani! *If earth is the area within a 2 mile radius of Oxford city centre.

alix, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Aw, bless you all children. Unlike Tom i am incubating the same set i've played at every other sussed ;) does anyone want to send me some indie records?

CarsmileSteve, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I will bring some if you promise not to play That Bloody Awful Spearmint Record, ever, again.

Graham, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I may have long enough to organise an expedition with the DG Chadwell 'eef massive, more news as it happens.

DG, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm afraid that's just a promise i can't make graham...

CarsmileSteve, Sunday, 13 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Apparently the old SUSSED venue, Latinos, has got a sixth-month reprieve from closure. Still, the Cellar will be much, much better, not least because of its closeness to rail/bus stations for those visitors from afar.

I must admit to being nonplussed as to why people hate Spearmint. How about some of their other trax tho? "I Can't Sleep", "Start Again", "This is Green, This Grey", rather than "Sweeping the Nation" all the time?

MarkH, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, give 'em a try. They can't be any worse.

N., Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

i thought they'd actually become quite popular with that admittedly lightning seeds-esque "going out". i am prize thicko.

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

because sweeping the nation is the only one i've got. and i like it cos of the spoken word bit about byker bridge...

CarsmileSteve, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I've got it. want me to bring it along? hmm actually I'm going to save it up for my next dj set! :p

jellybean, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

OH MY GAWD!!!! have you seen what else is on in oxford the same nite??? of course you haven't, try here for further info... dahn dahn dahn, dahn dahn dahndahn!!!

CarsmileSteve, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

hmmm flyering opportunity? catch the rawkers as they come out of the apollo.. maybe

jellybean, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think you should play that Primal Scream track Kill all hippies LOUD ! £26.50 to see Deep Fucking Purple ! in 2002 - what ever next !

DJ Martian, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

A customer is a customer DJ Martian. KAFTANS AT THE READY BOYS.

Tom, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Every fecking indie night in London has played that Spearmint song to death. And probably also Oxford too. Carsmile if you play it I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN FOR WHAT YOU HAVE DONE. You shall pay. I dislike it rather intensely. There are lots of BETTER spoken word records for example I cite All Saints, Gang of Four and my neice Katie mumbling about POLICE DOGS over a tape of The Tweenies.

Sarah, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

(k-blimey-o the Rolling Clones heh heh)

Sarah, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

if you don't play some screwy cover of Smoke On The Water i will be v disappointed

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oxford.

XStatic Peace, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm off to morpheus as we speak alan, "bring me casio smoke on the water, NOW!!!!"

CarsmileSteve, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

EVEN BETTER!!! Pat Boone version!!!! there are over 2000 versions of smoke on the water on audiogalaxy...

CarsmileSteve, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

two weeks pass...
Three days to go - who's coming?

Tom, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Me me me me me me!

Sarah, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

A tough one. Am attracted to the idea of the trip out of town with delightful Sussed attendees, but am in a(nother) spell of sobriety enforced by questionable health.

So the question must be asked: will the Oxford indie disco (heh) and the international indie drunks be tolerable without the aid of the Oxford ale?

Oooh I hope I haven't contributed to the trope of indie sneering.

Tim, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

hope you get better soon, Tim. It's going to be quite a weekend. Sinister meet-up in Brighton followed by Strange Fruit at the Highbury Garage followed by SUSSED. Woo!

MarkH, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I hear Brighton is full of goth freemasons.

Sarah, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

on for sussed. considering strange fruit -- sell it to me!

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

not to mention T&F tomorrow night, what a weekend it promises to be.

chris, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Me (and me only). Is there pubZor before?

Brighton was full of gay tie-dyed homeless dreadlocked bass-playing buskers last time I went.

Graham, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

We've not sorted the pub out. The Crown?

Tom, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

ALANG - i am going to make RickyT DJ Duran Duran at Strange Fruit - that's if i'm there rather than in Blackburn chiz. how's that for an incentive??

katie, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

but i don't like duran duran. what are you on about? now if he'd bang on some a-ha i'd be there like a shot. i must admit i didn't know Mr T (hey, I was Mr T first, grr) was a SF bod. who is exactly? (You must remember i have been in hiding from indie for several years)

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I will be there and be square. I will also be djing at SF, but sadly too early to get away with any Duran Duran. Tho if anyone can throw me a promo of the new Sugababes track I will definitely play that.

RickyT, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Guh! I spot Strange Fruit person at top City Sushi Bar, think "no- one's talked about pro-indie trope troupe Stwange Fwoot for ages" and return here to find you discussing it! Get out of my head!

Tim, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Someone should let ME DJ very soon - along with my Skodas 7".

Sarah, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Am I coming the furthest distance to attend? I suspect so...

alext, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

This one's for you starry (or in fact any pokemon fan). I'd love to hear the pika-pika- pika song at SF. the chances are pretty low though :-)

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm trying to download it Alan but I don't know if I'll be able to listen to it... it's downloading as an mpg file but it is an mp3 right? I will try and rename it if it downloads properly.

Sarah, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Wow. I am listening to it now. IS GENIUS!!! This is SO URGENT AND KEY FOR STRANGE FRUIT that I cannot believe!

Sarah, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

that'll be ok, mp3 is a specific flavour of mpeg. if it craps out i'll dig out the cd i burned with it on. it might have more even more embarassing novelty choonz on it, like the Cuban Boys Battle of the Planets theme, and that Life of (Big Brother) Brian thing.

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

:-)

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I've not heard of any of these! But I want to! Will you burn me a cd?

Sarah, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

er, they are a bit poor. the novelty wears off quickly -- often before 1 whole play.

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

shurely GRAPES rather than crown, not that i live there or anything... anyway, if anyone needs a mobly number for confirmation of PUB, drop me a line :) twill be a GREAT NITE featuring lots and lots of BOOTLEGS!!! (am working on own track (provisionally entitled "get yr JUMPER on") at the moment)

CarsmileSteve, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The Great Ida Barr does a lovely rendition of "Get Your Coat On" to the strains of Missy Elliot.

Alan, Thursday, 7 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Crown has a juker, Grapes doth not.

Tom, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Steve, if you could make anything more danceable of the Pokémon mp3 (pik pika pika!) that Alang posted the other day I could even forgive you for playing those Sp34m1n+ fuXors!!

Sarah, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Frankly if it was a choice i'd rather you play both (just make a change from Sweeping the Nation why doncha?)

I know not of these puZoR that you speak. can i ask for more meet details pls.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

i may have had a beer for lunch, hence two halves of sentence may not make sense when read as a whole.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I dunno if I'm coming yet, the thought of the obligatory cross-London trek makes me more than a little reluctant.

DG, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

yeah, Oxford's a long way from Essex innit?

chris, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

but the grapes is GRATE, and the crown is a dive, and it has 5 versions of rockin' all over the world on it, so "having a juker" is hardly a plus point...

However, as i am a generous mang (and i want this sorting) we'll go for the crown, which is on cornmarket down an alley next to mcdonalds, on the left hand side if you are coming from carfax. Here is a map of ox (you can right click on it and zoom in, til you can actually read it), the crown is basically where the last T of cornmarket streeT is, and the cellar itself is where the red dash next to the M is, if that makes sense...

carsmilesteve, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Hush your noise, Chris. Going from East to West London is never a pleasant experience. I want my own helicopter. Or Keith Moon milkfloat.

DG, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Hah! Got here first!

OK, reporting back: Didn't make it to the pub beforehand; how many of you went to the Crown? Never really paid the jukebox much attn, but it has a "Who wants to be a millionaire?" machine which is a good thing in my book. I would've plumped for the Three Goats Heads myself, but I believe there are people on this 'ere forum who have something against Sam Smiths...

Anyway, SUSSED itself was fantastic, it was Emma's* first time there and she had a good time tho she cried off early. Tom treated us to WoT's "sons of the stage", which brought back many happy memories (ah! musical assocation!) akin to those generated by renegade soundwave last time. Graham crashed on my sofa and as I left him watching tv when I left for work at 8.30 this morning he may still be there................

Oh yeah, I'll be back in the Cellar tonight to see the Endless City Lights (or "Enless" if you believe their flyer).

* nb Leeson (my gf) not Hamilton.

MarkH, Monday, 11 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

nice to say hi, even it was so briefly, and i'm sorry i didn't have more time to talk to more people, but i had been walking Oxford all day and ready to drop when i got to the crown. if only I had had the nerve to take a kip in the pub. i fell asleep on the coach home and woke up 30 mins later bright eyed and ravening for some indie-core

So i managed to div up both SF (for pop-idol) and Sussed. a top weekend.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 11 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I left Mark's house about 10 minutes after him. One glimpse of Moira Stewart's trendy new hairdo and I was satisfied for the rest of the day.

Graham, Monday, 11 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

(And Sussed was great too)
