TOMBOT'S Amazon Marketplace Blowout (wherein you make jokes at the expense of my juvenile obsessions)

Techno: The Nuremberg Trials indeed.
Although the Damned Anthology is in there as well. Because frankly I can't see a reason to own 2 whole CDs of the Damned.
Please feel free to make jokes at my expense as I attempt in vain to sell off the dross of 7 years' IDM+313 fanboy badness. Yes, I was the Assistant Music Director in charge of RPM reviews and charts for quite a while.

Terrible, just terrible

I swear there's some actual gems hidden in there. I'm going to be posting new shit for the rest of the week and some books etc. Daddy needs a new pair of pants, etc.

Thanks!

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 4 January 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago) link

We could just buy you some new pants.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Is it really worth it to you to sell Snatch for $1.70? Couldn't you get close to that from a used CD/DVD shop without having to pay Amazon fees?

Yes but then he'd have to actually go out the house.

Though the fees aren't as bad as you think--they charge you commission but also pay you for your postage so it evens out to about the same (FWIW)

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago) link

hahaha oh, those RPM charts.

I think at least two of our MDs used to insert at least one fake act into the top 10 of both those and the metal/loud rock charts just to see if anybody noticed.

kingfish holiday travesty (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I mean I feel amateurish that I can't bring myself below $1.00 on some of these, apparently Amazon is full of some real pros who game that postage compensation system so good that they can make money selling shit for a penny.

My mom is senile and has purchased Tom THREE copies of the Iron Giant, thankfully I caught her before she sent the third one on its way. So we have extras.

kingfish holiday travesty (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago) link

OK Seriously there are over 1000 hardcover copies of Thomas Harris' Hannibal available used right now, probably half of those are down to a penny. This is worse than the paperback harry potter chamber of secrets and the OMC "How Bizarre" album.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah that's really problematic. FWIW I got that book for free.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Well here is how it pans out if you calculate by the sheer # of used copies, A copy of Hannibal is worth one quarter of what OMC's How Bizarre is worth, a copy of Chamber of Secrets is worth half of Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections, and OMC and Franzen are about neck and neck.

This is what I learned today.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 5 January 2006 23:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Hannibal isn't going to sell, FYI, I've been trying to sell it for a year.

i can't be bothered to sell anything on amazon for less that $6, it doesn't seem worth it, when you factor in having to buy a padded envelope as well. but maybe you steal these from the government.

Jimmy Mod (I myself am lethal at 100 -110dB) (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago) link

LESSONS LEARNED:

1. Hardback books are a rape unless they sell for more than $10.00. Some bitch just asked for expedited shipping on Prisoner of Azkaban and I'm like WHO CARES, HOBAG, PRIORITY MAIL IS ONLY $0.10 MORE EXPENSIVE FOR HUGE FUCKOFF BOOKS LIKE THAT. $5.49? NOT EVEN CLOSE! I know I'll be paying $6 at least for shipping to Illinois and $1.50 for the mailer, which wipes out all my profits after Amazon takes their commission. I feel like Tony Wilson here.

2. I mean fucking airmail to Australia or the UK is apparently cheaper than sending a 2lb. book to goddamn Chicago.

3. You're not supposed to bring more than 10 packages into the post office at once. Oh what the fuck ever, bitch.

4. Stamps for US First Class mail are going up to $0.39 this Sunday (the 8th). We will see letters being mailed for $1.00 in my lifetime! How exciting!

TOMBOT, Friday, 6 January 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Also, people be shopping from the office on a Friday afternoon, damn.

TOMBOT, Friday, 6 January 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago) link

If you're so cool and well-compensated and brilliant, why are you spending all your time selling such shit on Amazon?

[tuvan throat singer's profound lyric sheet-must read again] (nordicskilla), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I hope you don't take that personally.

I do this too, but that's because I'm poor and son't have a social life.

[tuvan throat singer's profound lyric sheet-must read again] (nordicskilla), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago) link

WTF kind of rule is that 10 packages thing? I've regularly brought far more than 10 packages at a time and no one has ever given me a lecture about it. There is no such rule! That doesn't even make sense. What a lazy bitch.

Also, um, you know if you just go to Staples and buy a bunch of padded envelopes at a time it's a LOT less expensive? ALSO "expedited shipping" on Amazon means first class on books and DVDs; regular shipping is media mail (though I sent everything first class when I did it because media mail is PRICIER for CDs and DVDs somehow).

xpost because I refuse to continue toting shit that Tom neither wants nor uses from apartment to apartment and I'm forcing him to either sell or throw out!

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Three. the other one is in softcover, at home. I think the first one? I have no fuckin' clue. Apparently my mother thought I needed a lot of really magical and gay books to read while I was learning Korean for the continued security of our freedom.

Yeah no if it weren't for QUESTION LADY here I'd be perfectly content to surround myself with boxes of CDs I've listened to once and never again.

I've sold only 83 books and CDs so far, minus Amazon commission and shipping and packaging costs I'd say my net profits hit close to $650 at this point. 312 open listings to go! Oh, whoops, 309.

I am having to make daily trips to the post office in the morning and weekly stopovers at Staples on the way home though.

shit I just mailed a letter with 37 cents on it yesterday. That thing better not be coming back my way.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Saturday, 21 January 2006 09:29 (nineteen years ago) link

It so totally is coming back your way.

I feel like telling some of these people, like the ones who I can tell are in college (by looking at their address), slipping in a piece of paper hand-scribbled with "you don't need this! stop yourself before it's too late. one day you will grow up and realize none of it is actually very good and you'll have to do what I'm doing right now! just stop yourself! clear out all the music and movies on your wishlist and stay away from the computer! you'll thank me at 27."

Especially, for some reason, the guy who just bought my Trojan Dancehall Box Set. A totally unnecessary expenditure if ever there was one. By both of us.

TOMBOT, Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Tom, I'd very much like to buy "Waveform" by T Power from you, and I could certainly certainly pay more than a dollar! The only problem is I don't have a credit card, is there any other way to deal with the transaction? Maybe I could just mail you some cash and when you get it you could mail the record to me?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha, I guess I sound like a pathetic music geek you describe, but I've been looking for that LP for years.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 22 January 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago) link

How much did you get for the Trojan set?

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Sunday, 22 January 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago) link

$12.49 after shipping credit and commission.

Tuomas: I'm not sure how else you can pay on Amazon but I thought they had other options, like direct bank account debiting which I believe they just added this year.

OTOH if at the end of 30 days I still haven't sold it I could just mail it your way anyway, it makes no difference to me.

TOMBOT, Monday, 23 January 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago) link

one month passes...

140 items sold
250 to go
$1377.47, postage + materials not included.

Finally somebody bought the Iron Giant.
I just doled out my first refund to some dude who didn't get his Christian Morgenstern CD (memo to buyer: that album was totally disappointing anyway.) Learned yesterday that The Container Store, of all places, actually has the best prices I've found yet on self-adhesive 6x9 bubble mailers. Did you hear that, Staples? Shove that easy button in your ass. All up in it.

Tuomas if you still want the T.Power album it's there! If you continue to refuse to get a credit card I'll mail it to you anyway, just send me your mailing address, whenever you decide to visit the HQ of English-Speaking Power & Justice WorldWide Inc you can buy me a beer or something.

The weirdest order remains the South Korean who bought off my gift copy of All The Pretty Horses. A guy from Sony Imageworks bought my copy of Speedy J's "A Shocking Hobby" but that seemed more or less predictable.

I need $$$ :(

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 18:39 (eighteen years ago) link

you get the shipping credit automatically added to the price. Then amazon takes their cut of the total (cf comments above re not selling anything for less than $6) and once a week or two you get paid via direct deposit into your account.

DEFINITELY sign up for expedited/int'l shipping on CDs and such, it's the dough.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:00 (eighteen years ago) link

my orders have slowed to a trickle and as such I'm being kind of a jerk in terms of timely shipping. Like I just wait until I get half a dozen or so orders in my email before packing them all up and heading to the PO, meaning these poor kids are waiting up to 2 WEEKS for their shit IDM compilations.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:20 (eighteen years ago) link

I've been treating myself to a Pro Merchant account ($40/month) because it's such a pain to renew items when they expire after 90 days, but it's time for that to stop. I've only had 41 sales so far this year, after 371 from 10/04 through 12/05. But it was nice to have 3 in one day last week.

Tombot, I don't know what you're paying for bubble mailers, but if you have a Sam's Club account or know someone who does, they have boxes of 25 that come out to under 20 cents each.

day one: used cd fell out of bottom, the market like.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 17 August 2006 01:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Exaggerating for effect, sort of.

I had about 800 CDs for sale at Amazon, putting my prices in the middle of the pack and relying on 100% positive feedback to make sales instead of lowballing. About a year ago I quit checking the competition's prices every time I renewed the listings. In May I put my account on extended vacation because work was too hectic. Took my account off vacation recently and decided to start checking comparables again, and I'm having to cut prices drastically (25%-50%) to stay competitive.

I'm pretty much going to let my listings expire and stay expired; I'm out of the money crunch I was in when I started selling shit, and it offends me to have to list stuff so cheap.
