when I was at school in the 80s we had a science teacher called Mr Hancock, nicknamed Herbie. A few years ago at a party I was stuck with someone who had been at the same school and talked for hours about details I couldn't remember. At one point he said "I met Herbie Hancock last summer" and I thought, thank god, the conversation has turned to music, that's more like it. "Yes, and we chatted about school..." My confusion was total for about five minutes.

"It's not as if these come up every day but this whole constellation of names is confusing:
Convair (jets)"
And of course
ConAm (evil megacorporation in Outland
Convair was one of those huge conglomerates that made all kinds of things. It made a pair of airliners, a supersonic bomber, a turboprop flying boat, the Atlas space rocket, a bunch of algorithms, and a two-megaton anti-bomber missile called the Sky Scorcher, that was presumably designed to destroy entire Soviet bomber formations plus Soviet spies on the ground who might be guiding the bombers and also all birds.
The weird thing is that it did all this while being part of General Dynamics, which was also one of those huge conglomerates that made all kinds of things. So it was a giant spider living in the belly of an even large spider. Imagine if General Dynamics had grown until it ran the entire world. Or if it made a deal with other huge megacorporations to rule the world. And people had to transport data inside their heads and everybody wore sunglasses all the time and had skull guns. How awesome that would be.
― Ashley Pomeroy, Saturday, 1 February 2025 19:28 (two weeks ago) link
I really hope that scenario doesn’t come to pass. For the younger generation especially.
It’s interesting that Convair’s passenger jets were only widely popular for a few years. Don’t think I’ve ever flown in one. They were supposedly faster than the jets before them.

The other prefixes I never confuse - things haven't been measured in kilobytes much this century, and terabytes are still new and the numbers measured in them still low. But whenever I need to specify the size of a memory chip or USB drive or iPhone capacity I always have to think for a moment whether its in MB or GB.

And then one spends additional cycles on separate Levi from Krasinski and that's already more head space than Levi deserves.
Like how it used to be a thing in simpler times to play on Andy Samberg - Mark Zuckerberg - Jesse Eisenberg; now it would offend with its triviality
One does not hear of people needing to differentiate Krasinski from Quinto
