Saving MP3's in Safari

I've started having trouble saving MP3's from the web to my computer... instead of saving as the full MP3's, they are saved as these little 12k files which don't do anything. There's an old Ask Metafilter thread which says something about how realplayer changes the MIME settings and you have to change them back, but isn't helpful about what that means or how to do it - if that's even correct. Does anyone know what I should do to correct this?

I'm using a Mac with OS 10.3.9 and Safari, although this problem also exists for IE. Thanks in advance...

It's probably not any MIME settings that are causing the problem. More likely is that a firewall is interfering. Open up a Terminal, type "file " (with a space afterward), drag one of these 12k files onto the window, and press return. Then report back what it says.

describe the exact process you're using to save them. are you right-clicking on a link and choosing "download linked file"? are you loading the mp3 up in a blank Safari window and then choosing "File --> Save As..."? what?

I'm loading it up in a blank window, listening to it to decide whether I like it, and then choosing "save as..."

That's how they usually open from MP3 blogs etc.

In the terminal it says it's an mpga, not an mp3. So somehow it has started to save them as mpga's, and I'd like to change it back to saving MP3's.

Don't use Quicktime to save MP3s. Option-click on the direct link to the MP3 instead.

Another nice trick to preview MP3s in Safari is to control-click then choose "open with iTunes". Then, the entire track won't be downloaded before you can hear it.

OK thanks, using option-click I can at least download things again.
