managing asthma

i'm looking for alternative ways to do it that actually work/one can depend on. or best drug scenarios.

How bad is it? I've been noticing mine's coming back after being pretty much dormant for years (I think it's reacting to new pollens, etc.). I try to take my mind off of it, chilling out at the same time, of course. I don't envy you if it's severe, but I've found I can manage it reasonably well with distractions.

i remember when i was a swimmer we used to all use the asthmatic kids' inhalers before our races. oh man! that was great.

For ther past year or so I've been using the Power Breathe twice a day. It's not cured my asthma, but I have noticed a very definite improvement. I've probably halved my use of Ventolin.

I've tried that Buteyko method of breathing, but I never really got into the habit of practising it regularly enough for it to make any difference. I know some people have had good results with it though.

My husband claims it stopped when he started smoking. Roffle. Don't think there's a connection!

Boyfriend swears that accupuncture was the best thing he's ever tried.

Buteyko as good as cured my dad's bad asthma and allergies, and he's not usually one for alternative therapies.

would be interested in trying acupuncture. . .

Avoiding allergens is huge for me and I often have to wear a mask out when they're bad. Other than that pretty standard routine: allegra and advair daily, ventolin as needed (rarely as long as I keep up with the others.) I've been thinking of getting allergy shots.

Don't mess around with asthma and avoid getting some kind of treatment though. A doctor told me once that if I let myself go on breathing at reduced lung capacity and not taking medications, my lungs could scar.

The best things I ever did for my allergies and asthma were to lose weight and get into better shape.

Swimming is fucking great for asthma.

Not meant rudely btw, but based on my own personal experience: I do the vacuuming in my flat looking like Dennis Hooper in Blue Velvet.

Bob Six, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 13:23 (seventeen years ago) link

haha. ya, i think i might have some dust masks left from some plastering/drywall shit i was doing last month which made me hack and wheeze like a mofo. the plastering, not the masks.

apparently lots and lots of apple juice is particularly good for asthma management

blueski, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 14:11 (seventeen years ago) link

for a quick fix allegra + ventolin/albuterol might do the trick, assuming you've got those handy (which a lot of asthmatics do).

yoga has helped me tremendously, any type really. hurting OTM about getting into shape.

I read a frightening account of a guy who intentionally infected himself with hookworm to get rid of his asthma. As it involved walking around barefoot in Africa to get the initial infection, probably not practical. It did work for him though.

three weeks pass...

i read that story too. he went to cameroon and jumped into piles of infected excrement outside people's homes. I HAVE MY DOUBTS ABOUT THE VERACITY OF THIS TALE. [ /sherlock holmes]

the cold air here in new york is hell on my lungs. i plan to get up to date with my asthma scrips when i'm back in l.a. (where my doctor/insurance is), but i rarely if ever get attacks out there. i think part of what's making my symptoms worse is my anxiety -- it's the "don't think of pink elephants" thing of fixating on something i wish i could stop doing, i.e. hyperventilating. buteyko only works if you can actually GET to that calm place where you can breathe correctly without forcing it.

I'm always terrified that my body will build up a resistance to albuterol, which leads me to using it less often than I should

putting this here because I had a hell of a time finding a website that wasn't trying to sell me the info instead of just giving it:
