One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich was the first book that excited me about Russia.

RIP
has anyone read August 1914 because I'm about 150 pages in and I've been reading it for a month, the characters just keep disappearing, is the whole book like this or will I actually get to read about a character with six names for more than a few pages before we move on again. This is driving me crazy.

kind of a tragic character. lived long enough to see his hopes tptally dashed. r.i.p.

(although maybe that's not true. he ended up pretty pro-putin)

yeah, he seemed to end up pretty othodox nationalist towards the end.

He wasn't completely thrilled with Putin either. I think basically he believed in an idealized Russia that never actually existed.

What a fascinating character. The NYT obit makes for good reading.

so sad, but considering his life its amazing he lived as long as he did.

yeah, I just naturally assumed that he had died decades ago
