http://blog.voyou.org/2008/07/26/authorized-non-circulating-liberian-legal-tender/
Surely you guys have seen and laughed at this commercial as well. I just saw it again, and noticed (which I didn't first few times around) the Liberian status of the non-circulating legal tender. I wonder what your run-of-the-mill numismatist? Do they take interest in this type of thing, or laugh at it like we do? Do they become genuinely offended? I wonder if they look down on people who buy these things as wannabes.

my favorite part is about the 9 and the 11 in the corners adding up the the twenty-dollar face value of the coin.

also, the sentence fragment " I wonder what your run-of-the-mill numismatist?" should have ended, "thinks about this."
Note that the display box costs extra.

The linked site claims Liberia gets "something like 97,3 percent of it's gross national product" from seling this stuff, yet there's no mention of it on the Wikipedia page for Liberian Economy.

To be fair, GDP hasn’t accurately been projected since the 90’s since no one has access to investment or government purchase numbers.

what a sad history liberia has.
this episode is a good instantiation of marx's dictum that history repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce

Liberia is just lucky that A.) most Americans don't know shit about geography, and B.) "Liberian" kinda sounds like maybe it has something to do with freedom

a - as opposed to those who don't know shit about history?
b - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberia#Etymology

I should clarify - I didn't mean for my 'a' to deny that the history of Liberia is strange and sad. I only meant for it to reinforce my 'b' that Liberia is indeed named for the concept of Liberty. No kinda maybe about it.
― Oilyrags, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 01:23 (sixteen years ago) link
well yeah, I sorta figured that that was the case. I guess I could've worded it better.
(also probably giving average Americans too much credit by assuming that they would recognize the Latin root, but w/e)

i think almost everyone would make that connection instantly.

ok this they say they offer this at "face value" of $20 USD, but according to the face of this it's $20 LD, which is worth 31 cents in USD http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic?value=1&exch=USD&expr=LRD
that means you're payingt $1280 in liberian dollars for $20 liberian
