Well I think the answer is, he will and he wont, a little of each. Socialism is a bygone term anyhow. But what can I say to McCainites who tell me that Obama's overly liberal stance will only make America a socialist country?

Without socialism I don't think Finland would have free education on all levels and government allowances for all students, so it would've been rather unlikely for a poor working class kid like me to go the university.

The US has a lot of trademarks of "socialism" anyway, depending on what state your in. In New Jersey, schools, roads, blah blah blah, are all funded by taxpayers, including the most generous unemployment benefits in the US. Of course the official state pass time is bitching and moaning about high taxes, so there you go. What people take for granted is, NJ public schools are the top in the nation, etc. etc. States that are less "socialist" have the worst schools, health systems, etc.
What foreigners don't realize is that the US is starkly different depending on what state you're in.

The problem is the capitalist farmers, see. The farmer lobby is internationally so strong, they get all sorts of benefits and subsidies from govts. Then they gripe about their taxes paying for health care for the poor etc.

Joe Bageant wrote about how the vast majority of Americans have a 6th Grade-level understanding of modern economics, which can feed into the usual mess of market idolatry that we already have. Massive ignorance over economic systems and American history feeds into this shit, where you have douchbags constantly repping Adam Smith and decrying communism when any sane or sensible public interaction with the rules that our constructed markets have.

Socialism is a bygone term anyhow
Tell that to Zapatero.
Unless you mean that it's a term which is no longer useful. I think may be true in America where I have heard it used to decribe anybody left of Reagan (including Nixon).
I still definbe myself as a socialist. I'm guessing that anyone who thinks Obama is a socialist isn't going to swayed by any argument.
― Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 10:05 (sixteen years ago) link
(any argument) to the contrary.
― Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 10:06 (sixteen years ago) link
Maybe so, but what's your definition of "socialism" then, when talking about modern Western countries?
Anyway, my main point was, that in post-war Finland (as well as in other Nordic countries) it was the social democrats, other socialists, and communists who were mainly responsible for getting us things like free universal healthcare, childcare, and education, income transfers to the poor via progressive taxation and other means, etc. I don't think the Finnish right-wing parties supported these changes the same way socialists did. These days the Social Democratic Party has moved towards the center, and I'm sure many of its MPs don't call themselves socialists anymore, but that certainly wasn't the case when the Finnish welfare state was built.

yeah, it really bothers me that there is nothing you can say to a McCain about any of Obama's stances that they can prove bad in some way. Then it's the counter arguments that I have trouble with. "Socialism is better..." - there's nothing to say that sounds pleasing about any of Obama's issues because they have a counter argument for everything. I no longer no how to argue politics or have any proof why Obama will be better.
