not much love on ilx it would seem. inspired by seeing PT&A, Uncle Buck, and The Great Outdoors within the last 24 hours.

Sixteen Candles transcends everything by miles.

I get all Miami Bass/Simpson/Disney World about the dialogue/backstory/character development in this movie.

Especially Farmer Ted making martinis.

Mangiafuoco (PappaWheelie V), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 07:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, editing Donger from stiff foreign exchange to party animal in one scene flat.

His "sexy girlfriend" maybe the most subtly realistic character ever in a movie.

i voted for home alone 2, just for sentimental value. xmas in nyc is <3 <3 <3 <3.

I picked Planes, Trains but hovered for awhile on Breakfast Club and Ferris.

National Lampoon's Vacation is the funniest film on this list by miles, so that.

nate woolls, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 08:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Breakfast Club probably.

if I'm not mistaken Reach the Rock was also an enjoyable little film.

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 09:31 (sixteen years ago) link

aw shit, voted for mr mom before seeing planes trains...

She's Having A Baby is where Molly Ringwald gets knocked up, right?

sad man in him room (milo z), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 18:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Pretty In Pink is really good too, just sayin

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 19:12 (sixteen years ago) link

did not know he wrote Mr Mom! one of my favorites. south to drop off, moron.

Granny Dainger, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 19:15 (sixteen years ago) link

"She's Having A Baby is where Molly Ringwald gets knocked up, right?"

Think it's Elizabeth McGovern actually.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 19:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, I was thinking of For Keeps (not a Hughes flick).

sad man in him room (milo z), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 19:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Pretty in Pink is really only good because of Spader and Harry Dean Stanton, even then I really despised McCarthy and Jon Cryer. Supposedly Cryer only got the role because Michael J. Fox dropped out at the last minute.

Wow. I know some artists have distinct career "sell-by" dates, but have you ever seen someones career been so obviously cut in half by a decade tranisition? John Hughes' carriage certainly turned into a pumpkin when the clock struck 1990.

D'Andrelo, the gay white ex-con (Pillbox), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 00:12 (sixteen years ago) link

True, but the ending was foretold: starting to look a bit shaky circa '88. Still, yeah. Jesus Christ.

Home Alone III was on tv like every weekend last spring. I was a bit surprised to find out Scarlett Johansson played the annoying sister in the film

xxpost: I was referring to his post-HA films, so I guess you can sub in 1991 if you like. Go ahead and his defend his work from that point on, if you like.

john candy's sensitive-guy turns, when steve martin unleashes everything at him just to discover that candy's character actually is self-aware and damaged and vulnerable, are great & add a depth of honesty to the tp&a. candy has an under-appreciated hurt-guy face. it's like whoa wait a minute this just got real everytime he deploys it.

three weeks pass...
seven months pass...

was thinking about whether we need to do this again, but i think we got it right the first time, more or less. would've put PIP over Breakfast Club, though.

If we did this again, I'm betting 16 Candles would plummet to the bottom of the list.

Top 4 remains OTM by my estimation, if arguable in terms of placement

for some reason the wife wanted to watch Weird Science last night, I relented. what a bizarre and almost entirely terrible movie.

I think Mr. Mom is the only one here I've ever had any particular fondness for, and that's mostly because I watched it endlessly as a kid (and also because Michael Keaton).

i still like home alone.

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Friday, 21 December 2018 18:13 (six years ago) link

Home Alone works best as a drinking game where you knock one back either a) every time someone should by all rights have been killed by whatever trauma they just suffered or b) every time the elderly neighbor slurps his dentures when he speaks. You WILL get trashed.

Loggins and Rogers and G are...K3NNY (Old Lunch), Friday, 21 December 2018 18:47 (six years ago) link

the violence in home alone 2 is such that marv and harry would've been killed roughly 20 times by the violence that befalls them

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Friday, 21 December 2018 18:50 (six years ago) link

always wonder if there were copy cat home alone pranks that killed people. like a kid braining someone with a paint can on a piece of rope

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Friday, 21 December 2018 18:50 (six years ago) link

I want to see a remake where the Wet Bandits actually sustain an appropriate level of injury and just keep going. Like they're half-obliterated carcasses just shuffling along in their determination to give that rotten kid what for.
