I haven't seen any of the three of them in at least 15 years, but I remember liking Giant the most.

Eden > Rebel >>>> Giant

I was disappointed with the way East of Eden adapted the book.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 1 October 2009 05:18 (fifteen years ago) link

A faithful version of EofE would've been 6-8 hours long (like that forgotten TV miniseries in the '80s?).

He was a surprisingly great old drunk in Giant.

Rebel easily for me.

A Patch on Blazing Saddles (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 1 October 2009 13:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Giant.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 1 October 2009 13:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Rebel.

Why don't I own this?

DavidM, Thursday, 1 October 2009 13:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Rebel has an all-time great title.

Aimless, Thursday, 1 October 2009 16:36 (fifteen years ago) link

unfortunately it is an all-time terrible film

I should really get around to seeing Giant one of these days tho

Kazan retro coming up, isn't it, Morbs?

Shakey, you dum... I was working at the radio station once when some other volunteer was going on and on about what a weak, "dated" melodrama Rw/oaC was, and my response was yeah, except for all the other ones.

Yes JR, next weekend.

A Patch on Blazing Saddles (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 1 October 2009 16:46 (fifteen years ago) link

even as a teenager, the implication that the reason Dean is so messed up is because his cowardly dad won't stand up to his nagging mom struck me as a) completely regressive and b) ridiculous. like really if only Mr. Magoo would BE A MAN James would be a-okay like all the other teenagers. duh.

Hahahah I admit I thought the same thing when I saw the title.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 October 2009 16:59 (fifteen years ago) link

I only ever saw Giant back in the day when they showed it on WABC-7 in three consecutive nightly installments, which, what with the commercials and the catchup to the previous installments, ended up taking six hours of broadcast time. Not ideal conditions, although it did work okay for Some Like It Hot.

if only Mr. Magoo would BE A MAN

It's so overdone as to be cruelly funny- wearing the apron, drawing up a list of the pros and cons- hilarious!

Compare with the Simon Oakland psychologist at the end of Psycho.

Are we voting for the films or Jimmy's performance in the films?

If the latter, "Rebel"

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 1 October 2009 17:22 (fifteen years ago) link

yes, it's a Dean poll, his performance. Giant is pretty easily the worst film.

A Patch on Blazing Saddles (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 1 October 2009 17:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Don't know, I can't actually remember much about him in "East of Eden"

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 1 October 2009 17:33 (fifteen years ago) link

well, his dad is Raymond Massey, who doesn't wear an apron.

A bad actor -- I never got his rep.

Monty Clift could do everything Dean could, and was beautiful to boot.

My favorite performance in Giant is Liz Taylor's. She's aged well, and her acting honors the makeup.

Rebel is the best of the three, Giant is the worst. BUT he basically carries Giant with his supporting role, so I'll go with it as it shows how good he really was.

man Giant sucks. can’t believe anyone would care about this movie if it wasn’t for the James Dean factor, and he isn’t particularly good in it

though he’s still much better than Rock Hudson

A bad actor -- I never got his rep.

― Roman Polanski now sleeps in prison. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn),

I get the rep lol. He does odd little things in East of Eden: rubbing his face against a post, hopping down some steps with hands in his pocket to get people's attention. He's not playing a character: he's using tricks and mannerisms to substitute for a character. But he's arresting, no questio.
