Sony "Sports" walkman

Saturday afternoon my in-laws brought my son my wifes old yellow sports walkmen...this thing is the size of a lunchbox. What makes it sporty? Its yellow? Big fucking deal. Oh wait its waterproof supposedly isn't it? Yes, a waterproof walkman, god forbid peoples fat boys tapes got ruined while they did laps. Actually who the fuck would work out to the fat boys. I don't really know what this has to do with anything.

did it have an armband? so you could have a little more freedom in your power-walking armswing?

it does bring back memories of listening to my "thinking" mixtapes...basically my "thinking" mixes involved shitty Chicago ballads and Benny Mardones.

wait a second, is benny mardones a pedophile....wtf. Never paid attention when i was a fat 12 year old.

thebingoisback, Monday, 5 October 2009 19:05 (fifteen years ago) link

hmm just looked on itunes for Benny Mardones, of course i just fucking spent .99 for this shit. Why. Its off of a cd called "Ultimate Wedding Hits!". If this is ever played at a wedding im attending i will fucking tear it up. I bet there are some 40 year olds that would make out the hard way on the dance floor...its almost a guarantee someones uncle will dry hump the bride to this shit.

I used to have one of these...

...they were rather large, the window being almost as wide across as the cassette.

Oh FUUUUCK I had one of those! I made it non-water resistant by taking out some of the rubber or sth. Fuck I liked that walkman.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Monday, 5 October 2009 19:32 (fifteen years ago) link

so beautiful

surm, Monday, 5 October 2009 19:33 (fifteen years ago) link

(xpost) the radio on mine stopped working, then shortly after the whole thing packed in. I replaced it with the distinctly less impressive (and radio-less) WM-SX34. Both suffered from the same problem - nothing to hold the cassette in place firmly, so it kept rising off the spindles as it played.

And it doesn't count as a "Sports" Walkman, but gathering dust at the bottom of a cupboard I had one of these...

Agreed. This is gold.

Serious answer: my guess is that once walkman technology became cheap and ubiquitous and no longer a status thing, Sony needed some new way of charging more for a high-end status walkman.

Bay-L.A. Bar Talk (Hurting 2), Monday, 5 October 2009 20:45 (fifteen years ago) link

We still have the waterproof Sony sports walkman hooked up to our stereo, for those drunken nights when you get really nostalgic and just HAVE to play that mixtape with Pat Benatar doing Hell is For Children live...juxtaposed with Rush's Temple of Syrinx.

and those waterproof walkmen were the bomb for when you wanted to listen to music in the bathtub. my friend had one that had a little industrial submarine window in it and everything.

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 5 October 2009 20:49 (fifteen years ago) link

My god I never thought about listening to my walkman in the tub. I did all my best masturbating in the tub when I was young and if I thought about using the Walkman to add to the flavor I would have struck gold.. Crankin it in the tub with "hard to say I'm sorry" going in my ear...buckets baby buckets.

i had the radio shack Realistic (TM) knockoff of this

i remember thinking about taking it in the shower.i somehow had the luminous idea to figdet with the rubber. :-(

god i loved that walkman. i think i played george michael's faith and neneh cherry's raw like sushi on that on repeat. a discman somehow seemed ridic in comparison

Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 12:17 (fifteen years ago) link

i had a blue then a yellow sony sports walkman. they were sports because they were hard molded plastic with bud headphones and waterproof. most walkmens back then were black and boxy and felt kind of flimsy. i mostly used mine in the tub too.

when i saw this on the news today my first reaction was surprise that they were still making any of these things at all.

but still :'( because i had the exact same black one as in the article photo. it took some terrible abuse and in the end was actually in about five pieces held together by layers of duct tape - kept working for YEARS in that state. RIP.

Kim, Monday, 25 October 2010 15:28 (fourteen years ago) link

I never tested the water resistance because I'd be out a phenomenal amount of money - like a whole $50 or something -if it broke. I also eventually colored mine black with a sharpie.

I have fond memories of spinning tapes around on a pencil in study hall so I could save battery power by not having to rewind.

Some company used to sell a gadget with a hand operated crank for manually rewinding tapes.
