Understanding the noxiousness of CU fandom possibly depends on having been in yr early 20s at the time of the film's release, I just realized.

BS appeals to dunderheads of all ages, however.

beachville, Monday, 5 March 2012 13:04 (twelve years ago) link

Back when my son was playing with the troubled kid next door, they'd play all sorts of action stuff like little kids do, from Batman & Spiderman to cops & robbers to army guys etc.

One day I noticed that my kid was going through a pretty heavy "guns" phase. He was walking around all strapped with his various nerf guns and cap guns. I watched him for a bit as he aimed his gun and started muttering gibberish under his breath for a minute before pulling the trigger. I was a bit confused as to what he was playing until later when it dawned on me that the 6 year old next door had been watching Boondock Saints.

wiyf:

As mentioned in the movie, the slang term "coyote ugly" refers to the feeling of waking up after a one-night stand, and discovering that your arm is underneath someone who is so physically repulsive that you would gladly gnaw it off without waking the person just so you can get away without being discovered. Coyotes are known to gnaw off limbs if they are stuck in a trap in order to facilitate escape.

boondock saints was not straight to video, it was low budget and didn't have a wide release but it was in theatres, for some reason. afterward it became a huge cult movie on vhs/dvd because it is violent and angsty and caters to the revenge fantasies of emotionally stunted man-children

Nicholas Pokémon (silby), Monday, 5 March 2012 20:47 (twelve years ago) link

BTTF, Matrix and Shawshank all strike me as being too broadly popular to have anything like the cultish fan bases we're discussing here. Even with the pseudo spirituality of Maxtrix, there's nothing particularly exclusive or alienating about them. How exactly would you identify someone as a fan of these films unless you were discussing them directly?

Fight Club, BS and (at least in my experience) CU fans all seemed to have absorbed these films into part of their personalities, it seems to me. For better or (in these cases) for worse.
