I hope things bounce back soon, Whiney! Sorry about your stuff, your displacement, the scariness, &c.

Damn Whiney, my sympathies. Checking ILX is probably not your top priority at the moment, but when you do, let me know if there's anything you need. Don't even know what city you're in, but if you need a place to stay around Boston you'll be set up. My apartment was burned down when I was in high school. Losing your stuff is pretty terrible, and getting uprooted in that way can take a major psychological toll that you might not fully recognize at first, in the rush to get back to something like normal. So be on the watch for that and take care of yourself. And again, if there's anything I can do to help with the taking care, just say it.

I was tremendously saddened to see the news via your Twitter last night Whiney. I know we've butted heads a few times on here, but my thoughts are with you now and I hope things work out for the best. I'm not sure what help an unemployed duder in Chicago can offer, but if theres anything I can do... let me know.

Sorry, I meant to follow up on this -- I was only there for a while, to drop off some boxes/flashlights and pitch in a little, but it looked like the lucky part was that he had his office in the most protected room in the place ... so he lost a lot of living-room and probably bedroom stuff, but it seemed like a lot of records, books, papers, etc. came through okay.

He has someone great to stay with and help him out, so he's good in that sense.

Against fireman’s wishes and defying any modicum of common sense, my first instinct was to dive inside the burning building and save my laptop. This I did. I’m typing on it now. I have a book about Hipster Puppies due in a few weeks, and I’d rather die in a blaze than fuck up an assignment that awesome

glad you're okay whiney - hope this doesn't come off as callous or w/e, but there are a lot of cheap solutions to backup your files online, e.g. carbonite, and it's a good idea to have off-site backups of your data in general... so you don't run into burning buildings!!

flopson, Monday, 28 January 2013 05:54 (eleven years ago) link

i heard it on I'm Your Fan or one of those.

always thought it was weird that if u sample a session musician's riff or horns from a cover the writer of the bare bones tune gets the $. like bob dylan has a composer credit on beck's "jackass" because of the Them! riff from "it's all over now baby blue".

zvookster, Monday, 28 January 2013 05:55 (eleven years ago) link

xpost yeah it cracks me up that this song went from being on cohen's sole non-major label album, to a cale tribute album, to an art film soundtrack to a kids' movie soundtrack, with a pit stop on Grace.

from an nyt article about alan light's book on hallelujah:

The album containing “Hallelujah” came out on an independent label in 1984, and then it languished. See Ms. Simmons’s account for an understanding of why, by 1991, the world was nonetheless ready for a Leonard Cohen tribute album: “I’m Your Fan,” put together by the French music magazine Les Inrockuptibles. This album prompted a major overhaul of “Hallelujah” by John Cale, once of the Velvet Underground, who re-edited the lyrics, coming up with a version that has proved more enduring than Mr. Cohen’s. Mr. Cale’s stark, exquisitely pure rendition, with an emphasis on the song’s eroticism, is by some lights (like this one) the best “Hallelujah” ever recorded.

A remarkable stroke of fate sent Jeff Buckley, then an aspiring young troubadour, to stay in a New York apartment that happened to contain a copy of “I’m Your Fan.” Buckley heard the song and, like many who have heard it, claimed he had no idea who had written it. But he included an intensely, beautifully ethereal version of it on his 1994 album, “Grace,” giving it a young man’s hypercharged sensibility rather than the Cohen-Cale seasoned one. When Buckley died young (as his doppelgänger father, the singer Tim Buckley, had), “Hallelujah” developed a cult following. “Leonard penned it, but Jeff owned it,” Mr. Light writes.

The song leapt another hurdle because Andrew Adamson, one of the directors of the 2001 animated classic “Shrek,” had heard the Cale version on a movie soundtrack (for the film “Basquiat”). There’s a point in “Shrek” when the big green guy is feeling lovelorn and alone, and “Hallelujah” was becoming a go-to song for accompanying sad moments. But “Shrek” was a DreamWorks film, and a DreamWorks recording artist was needed. Enter Rufus Wainwright, who sang a fine but snappier version than Cale’s and helped drum this song into the consciousness of a whole generation of young listeners and viewers.

zvookster, Monday, 28 January 2013 06:02 (eleven years ago) link

that was strange to hear about too, from what i read of oldham prior he didn't seem like a musician. but i read just now that he hired different session musicians and called them the andrew loog oldham orchestra, so yeah, i see, it was a riff by one of his hired guns.

zvookster, Monday, 28 January 2013 06:05 (eleven years ago) link

Although the song's lyrics were written by Verve vocalist Richard Ashcroft, it has been credited to Keith Richards and Mick Jagger after charges by the original copyright owners that the song was plagiarized from the Andrew Oldham Orchestra recording of The Rolling Stones' 1965 song "The Last Time".
