I like the theater kid energy of the last two, so allow me to keep it going. This single came out last year but the album just came out last week. Glammy art-pop.

Haha the tune on that Allie X feels like a kind of homage to "Don't Go" by Yaz(oo)! And even shares a bit about getting/calling the doctor.

Changing my Mk.gee song to Alesis. Album released yesterday and that song is even better

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 10 February 2024 13:36 (three months ago) link

“I want” is also gorgeous… listen to the whole thing.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 10 February 2024 13:37 (three months ago) link

yeah mk.gee album is really good. i think the singles ("are you looking up?," "dream police," "candy") are the strongest, but not by much. really like the two you've highlighted, moka.

This is an album I'm really looking forward to - new Clarissa Connelly coming in April on Warp Records. She's a Danish musician and perhaps is something like a medievalist version of ML Buch. Her last album (The Voyager, 2020) is well worth checking back on if you missed that, but this is the latest track to drop from the new one:

the end of that is quite interesting, i will need to remember to check out the album when it's out

ufo, Thursday, 15 February 2024 11:05 (three months ago) link

Loving this one too - think they're an Australian producer, this is kind of somewhere between underworld and Saint etienne, so in the Real Lies ballpark I guess? Anyway, dreamy vocal dance stuff, bodes well for her album....

There’s no Mk.gee thread and I think this is the only thread were there has been any discussion of the 2024 album so I’ll use this thread to suggest listening to his performance at the Jil Sander fashion show in Milan. It’s lovely.

I love how much of the music in this thread is Danish, so let me add one more. My favourite Danish indie-pop band Kindsight has a new album on the way. Recommended to fans of Alvvays and all that:

really loving that Bolis Pupul record, i might like the song that plays before that one ("Spicy Crab") even more but it's all pretty great really

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Monday, 11 March 2024 18:39 (two months ago) link

Thanks for the Mk.gee song on this list. That leapt out at me the other night and I went and listened to the album, it's good! Solid songwriting and really inventive sonics and musical settings, talented guy.

Moka, you might like this new single from the Marias, a group from LA maybe best known for featuring on Bad Bunny's Un Verano Sin Ti:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NOlqJHvAZo

Previous releases have had a woozy sound reminiscent of Men I Trust and other Gorilla vs Bear shambhala but this song is a little more direct (it reminds me somewhat of the French discopop band L'Impératrice, who incidentally also released a new song last week)

monotony, Tuesday, 12 March 2024 04:46 (two months ago) link

Funny you mention it, I follow your “2024” playlist and I was just listening to it a few hours ago while driving and that one caught my attention.

I do know about them… been very loosely following their work since the Superclean EP back in 2017 and even had a couple of their songs on one of my bar’s playlists.

Liked their first album too, had no idea a new one was coming out this month, so thanks fir the heads up!

Two I liked released today:

R. Missing - Get Careful Darker

Darkwave in the style of "Italians do it better". I'll always be a sucker for this kind of vibe.

Nourished By Time - Had Ya Called

apparently this is AI generated - Guys what is wrong with my cat? It's on spotify as well, with the artist credited as AnotherLaughingMan. I think a lot of the AI generated art that I like takes as its subject matter limitations in understanding or an unbridgeable gap between different ways of perceiving the world, makes the fact that it always sounds slightly 'off' into a virtue?

soref, Monday, 1 April 2024 08:42 (two months ago) link

was skeptical when pitchfork gave the new empress of album best new music, since i had heard literally nothing about it until then, but yeah, it hits. faves are "cura" and "facil," warped, ethereal club anthems both, with "cura" borrowing a bit from jersey and "facil" with stuttering, chopped up dembow drums

"cura"

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 10 April 2024 16:18 (one month ago) link

welp imo they put the best tracks out as pre-release songs, but it doesn't matter because the chanel beads album still delivers. very hazy, pleasantly druggy vibe. weird songs... they'll have these huge choruses, but it'll only hit once during the song's runtime. kind of that wire pink flag ethos of "you get the idea so we'll just stop here." short album too; 9 songs, 28 mins. very solid 4 mics.

digging the 'heart racers' ep by kanii, riovaz, and nimstarr. they're all producers and vocalists so idk who is responsible for what, but the ep is a great bit of late night pop. feels very anti-trend in the underground, but i can't get enough of the keyboard sounds.

now i haven't kept up with her since the second album so i am entirely unsure if this is an intentional joke or what.

90s revival continues and okay kaya has wandered into that 120 minutes-curated sound of allegorical triphop-soundtracked worlds originally pointed+laughed at by heroes like luscious jackson or the "my woman" bloke. i intentionally did not post the proper music video for two reasons: it's full of, uhm, weird imagery and it's possibly nsfw. so yeah.
