Can you like dance music if you dont like dancing?

Cause it's the reason Ive never been able to get into any dance music; and most electronic music for that matter.

I know plenty of people who don't dance or club but like and buy lots of dance stuff. Nobody's gonna *make* you dance to it.

I like some dance music and I am deathly afraid of dancing.

Josh (Josh), Friday, 1 November 2002 03:30 (twenty-two years ago) link

I love to dance, but I don't like most of the music that gets filed under "Dance Music."

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 1 November 2002 03:36 (twenty-two years ago) link

It happened the other way with me: I wasn't one for dancing really (although I wasn't afraid of it), then I got into dance music and dancing seemed like the most natural and logical response to what I was hearing. For a while that meant dancing in my room, but I soon ventured into clubs.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 1 November 2002 04:09 (twenty-two years ago) link

that seems eminently reasonable and natural to me, aside from the fear part.

I don't much enjoy dance music when I'm sitting around my apartment, but it takes on new meaning during physical activity, whether it's exercising, mowing the lawn, or taking a walk. So maybe just movement is required.

I like dancing but not generally to most dance music - I'm not confident enough to dance to stuff I don't know without feeling detatched and self-conscious. But I still like a lot of dance music.

i think its possible to appreciate dance music if you don't like dancing, just as you can appreciate netal if you don't like moshing

I love to dance but pretty much hate all "dance" music.

Know loads of boys who don't dance at all, yet listen to nothing but "dance" and "electronica".

So that theory is shot to hell...

good point robin, i was going to say i thought to like a type of dance music but not want to dance to it was crazy but you sure showed me

Yes I am living proof of this thread. I do prefer music that has influences from dane music that you can't dance to.

"Dane music that you can't dance to" = Toybomb, Sorten Muld, Kim Larsen

IDM is good, because dancing sucks. I much prefer to stand around posing in my Mogwai t-shirt.

I like certain types of dance music, especially Moby's old rave stuff

Curtis Stephens, Friday, 1 November 2002 20:51 (twenty-two years ago) link

can all people who answer "yes" to the above question please stop going to see ritchie hawtin, carl cox and orbital just so they can stand fucking still in the middle of the dance floor and act annoyed whenever anyone who actually enjoys getting their groove on to this music (which is specifically crafted to get people to dance, lest we forget) bumps into them?

I realize there are some people who like to sit on their couch and listen to this stuff. Please have some respect for those of us who only listen to this at the club when we are trying to move as we don't come into your living room and dance while you sit on your ass.

(not meant to offend all non-dancers, just those who think that djs are the equivalent of a "stage show")

Curtis Stephens, Saturday, 2 November 2002 00:48 (twenty-two years ago) link

undoubtedly some do....so do some living rooms.
It's all relative.

Of course you can. Hardcore dance enthusiasts would scoff at me as I've never been to a dance club in my life (underage, y'see...), and I suppose in that respect I don't get as much out of dance music as aforementioned dance enthusiast would, but I still generally enjoy dance music more than any other form of music. Pet Shops, Black Box, Bizarre inc., the Fatboy, all great great stuff, and I've never danced ever in my life.

had you been to a club at that point, curtis?

jergïns, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 06:37 (sixteen years ago) link

you can love dancing and hate (most) clubs, though. which says nothing about dance music, and far too much about clubs, sadly.
