Van Hagar's song sounds like a shampoo commercial about boning

mookie wilson shaggin balls (Neanderthal), Monday, 23 May 2022 03:09 (two years ago) link

It probably is the best Hagar-era VH song but this isn't even fair, come on.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Monday, 23 May 2022 03:16 (two years ago) link

The only memorable thing in the Van Halen song is the syncopated bass and drum hits during the chorus. It's not as good as "Why Can't This Be Love" (which itself is only adequate).

You guys just wait. VH is gonna run away with this

calstars, Monday, 23 May 2022 23:32 (two years ago) link

I love Van Halen, but this is a travesty.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 23 May 2022 23:34 (two years ago) link

At least if the Allman Brothers had been included, I could see them getting at least some votes.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 24 May 2022 02:00 (two years ago) link

A poll between the Kinks and Van Halen versions of "You Really Got Me" would be interesting.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 24 May 2022 02:04 (two years ago) link

Ok just heard the VH song for the first time.

Is this how Van Halen usually sound like? I kind of hate the aesthetics on display in here, every stylistic choice is tacky.

I’m sorry and feel shame for whoever votes for this over FM.

John McVie vs. Michael Anthony - who got away with playing fewer notes per song?

Christine McVie vs. Eddie Van Halen (as keyboard players) - I can't recall if she ever played a keyboard solo per se on record?

I can almost hear Christine singing “I’ll Wait”

Not in the Roth era, that's for sure.

Is this how Van Halen usually sound like?

First album, with Roth, is quite different: more hard-edged and tongue-in-cheek, guitar-heavy, much less glossy and sentimental.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Tuesday, 24 May 2022 15:54 (two years ago) link

Ok just checked and I actually like several songs on the first Van Halen albums where they sound like power-pop like “Dance the Night Away” is great and probably my favorite songs that I’ve heard from them… also the first half of the first album is good too.

Don’t really feel most of what I’ve heard from their 80’s outpout and I don’t know anything they did after 1984z

maybe cranberries dreams would have stood a chance, but even then.. I think it's hard to think of any song that would win over FM dreams in any poll

corrs unplugged, Tuesday, 14 June 2022 11:44 (two years ago) link

I might take the Van Halen song over the Cranberries'.

Kinks’ “Dreams” > AB = FM >>> Hagar

OG Bob Sacamano (will), Tuesday, 14 June 2022 17:04 (two years ago) link

oh hey that Cranberries song is p good too. Don’t care most of their songs that made it into eardrums in the 90s but this one was solid

I’m sure I know Beck’s but I’ll have to confirm

OG Bob Sacamano (will), Tuesday, 14 June 2022 17:06 (two years ago) link

I reflexively voted for Fleetwood Mac and did not reacquaint myself with Van Halen's best song.

clemenza, Tuesday, 14 June 2022 17:07 (two years ago) link

and for me VH “Dreams” is definitely a decent cut from the only good Hagar era (which for me is relegated to most of 5150 and like 4 songs from OU812) but it’s still not as good as the others imho

OG Bob Sacamano (will), Tuesday, 14 June 2022 17:12 (two years ago) link

just imagining some poor woman trying to dry her sobbing eyes with Hagar screaming in her face

This reminds me of my dismay reading about Hagar describing his wife of this era suffering from depression. It's not always a good idea to extrapolate someone's private life from their artistic persona, but it's hard with Sammy.

especially since Michael McDonald co-wrote it.

I think at this point I would pick Debbie Gibson's "Only in My Dreams" over the VH *and* the FM, which I hear way too much.

Fun fact: iirc Van Hagar (as such) debuted at the inaugural Farm Aid!

The Red Rider was billed as a solo act, but EVH popped in.

you guys, feel as positive as you want about Hagar, but for "Mas Tequila" he deserves to be in prison

this Van Halen song…the band is playing out of their minds but the song itself is really not deserving of such pyrotechnics.. sub-Journey at best.

This show from the last legs of van Hagar mark I is amazing, Alex is playing with a broken neck and Sammy can’t hit the second “higher” so mike covers it

calstars, Wednesday, 15 June 2022 01:31 (two years ago) link

I saw them on their 2004 tour and they were teeeeeeeerrrrrible. EVH was a mess. Comments on a youtube boot of it:

This was a great show aside from Eddie repeatedly tripping over his guitar cord and it becoming unplugged

I was there!!! I still have the shirt we bought there...120 bucks. Almost my 10th birthday at the time. Feels like yesterday but I remember Sammy wearing yellow, Eddie looking like crap, and it was loud beyond belief

I was at this show and I remember thinking why is Eddie fucking around so much...I'm a guitarist and I've followed can Halen most of my life and it was the first time I've ever seen Eddie make mistakes...... obviously drunk

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 15 June 2022 02:05 (two years ago) link

At least you got to hear them perform "Up for Breakfast"!
