"Back On The Chain Gang" is not only better than any song in this poll, but also any song in the previous polls, and maybe better than any song ever QED

This is impossible.

Can't narrow down beyond these 7:

Gary Numan – Cars (Tie 3rd most votes from 1980)
The Go-Go's - Our Lips Are Sealed (2nd most votes from 1981)
Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls (2nd most votes from 1984)
Prince & the Revolution - Let's Go Crazy (Tie 3rd most votes from 1984)
Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill (2nd most votes from 1985)
Tears for Fears Everybody Wants to Rule the World (3rd most votes from 1985)
Peter Gabriel – Sledgehammer (Tie 2nd most votes from 1986)

fair but so uncool beliefs here (Eric H.), Thursday, 17 August 2023 18:55 (one year ago) link

Could vote for any of these:

The Clash - Train in Vain
The Go-Go's - Our Lips Are Sealed
The Pretenders - Back on the Chain Gang
Soft Cell - Tainted Love
Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls
Prince & the Revolution - When Doves Cry
Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Sisters of Mercy - This Corrosion
The Cure - Lullaby

Being boring, West End Girls.

Cities In Dust for me, still has an eerie power.

ILM did a good job as always, even the worst song on here No Myth is good.

Bee OK, Friday, 18 August 2023 15:58 (one year ago) link

I don't know how I can vote against "Train in Vain."

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 18 August 2023 16:02 (one year ago) link

I think the biggest surprise is no Depeche Mode. They are KROQ but didn't do as well as I thought they should.

Bee OK, Saturday, 19 August 2023 01:18 (one year ago) link

I have seen Depeche Mode more than any other band, they're beyond classic. Interesting that they didn't do that well on a poll actually designed for them.

Bee OK, Saturday, 19 August 2023 01:20 (one year ago) link

On polls I mean, there were 10 of theses.

Bee OK, Saturday, 19 August 2023 01:22 (one year ago) link

I think you get my point, just sort of tripping out about it as this happened:

Which vote is more accurate? Should I enter the ilm hive and watch you all dance, or fly off uninformed and behold the flowers with my compound eyeses?

I flew off and chose my nectar by instinct and memory. Otherwise I might have chosen back on the chain gang. I like and trust the hive. Am I not a bee? Today I am not a honeybee. Or maybe I am an antisocial, or sick, or ambitious bee.

Bee OK, Saturday, 19 August 2023 19:59 (one year ago) link

Just thinking out loud here and to continue. It seems like the Pet Shop Boys took the place of Depeche Mode in these results. Are the Pet Shop Boys better than Depeche Mode? It almost seems like that is what ILM is saying with theses results.

Bee OK, Saturday, 19 August 2023 20:02 (one year ago) link

I certainly enjoy Pet Shop Boys more than Depeche Mode.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 19 August 2023 20:42 (one year ago) link

TS: Depeche Mode vs. New Order vs. Pet Shop Boys

Bee OK, Monday, 21 August 2023 03:34 (one year ago) link

I guess it has sort of been decided and seems I wasn't around then. I would have just added to New Order win tho

Bee OK, Monday, 21 August 2023 03:36 (one year ago) link

I'm much more of a Depeche Mode person than the Pet Shop Boys.

Same here. I do like DM, but they don't hit me at the same level PSB do.

A worthy winner, a good example of a happy tune with what turn out on closer listening to be rather sad lyrics.

David Bowie, always a bridesmaid, never a bride.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 00:46 (one year ago) link

I heard Back on the Chain Gang at Vons yesterday and that told me it was going to win this poll. Mind you I had no idea if that was going to be true outside of some posts.

It really was an embarrassment of riches but still surprised something like Let's Go Crazy, True Faith and Sledgehammer got no votes.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 01:29 (one year ago) link

I voted Primary, as it felt like a song crashing the party with the guy in the leather jacket in the corner. Especially with something like Tainted Love ect.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 01:33 (one year ago) link

I voted "Train in Vain," which really feels like it belongs to a different era from the rest of these songs.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 22 August 2023 01:33 (one year ago) link

huh, yeah it does. i went bowie because that song is bigger than life to me, in a weird way. but botcg is sooo good, good result.

Man, that's a great set for driving around LA in the late summer of 1989 with the windows down. Turned it up for "Cities In Dust"
