It’s a ‘rip right through’ album rather than an individual songs kind of deal for me, but “Angel of Death” give me chills, particularly that drop right before the duelling solos.

saw slayer live pre pandemic and them playing raining blood followed by angel of death is one of my all time best live musical experiences

I listened to this a dozen times over the last year and couldn't really enjoy any of the songs. The only other Slayer song I like is "Blood Red" if that explains anything.
Voting "Piece by Piece" because I always had to laugh at the delivery of the title at the end.

Necrophobic! But yes, more than any other Slayer album this is a front to back listen.

Postmortem will always be my fave track on a perfect album. Harnessing all that complexity through simple dynamics, it blows me away every time I hear it.

That said, the breakdown riff in Angel of Death is probably my favorite metal riff of all time.

A. Begrand, Friday, 18 August 2023 21:12 (one year ago) link

I see this album as a movement in three parts. Tracks 1-5 are kind of its own beast, blistering fast, little let-up, simplistic face-sanding. 6-8 a little bit more transitional, less extreme, slower, with more parts, kind of building to a big finale. and then Postmortem and Raining Blood as the 1-2 knockout punch.

so yeah, definitely prefer to listen to this as a collection, but for my fuckin' money, nothing beats "Altar of Sacrifice". that battering ram of an opening riff, that evil main riff, the mid-tempo "say the sacred words of praise HAIL SATAN" part....all amazing.

"Necrophobic" second place.

I do find it amusing that this was the one album of theirs with utterly 'clean' production. none of the reverb drenched shit of their Metal Blade days, or the muddy, sloppy sound they preferred after Seasons - every note pristine and easy to pick out, all while beating you the fuck up.

that said....this is the one I find it hardest to listen to these days because I listened to it so damn much as a teen. i prefer listening to live versions of the songs simply because I could listen to this song in my head note for note without having to strap on headphones by this point.

For this thread I listened to this album for the first time in probably... ten years and loved every minute of it. One of those albums where I know every note by heart. My knee-jerk reaction is to vote Reigning Blood, because taking the album as a full piece of music, it's kind of the summation of the whole thing and it delivers so well on that. But... by itself? If I could listen to one song in isolation, I think it would be either Angel of Death or Postmortem. So, I'll vote the latter since AoD will probably win anyway.

In times past I've made the statement that South of Heaven is better than Reign in Blood. Listening to both right now, I'm embarrassed by that opinion. There's not a weak song on Reign in Blood. It is Slayer at the top of their game. South of Heaven was the first thing by Slayer I ever heard and it's a good successor to Reign in Blood, but it has Dissident Aggressor and Spill the Blood on it.
