Also, I'd imagine if you know who Cory Hanson is, you know his band Wand, but in the event that you haven't checked out Wand and you liked Western Cum, you absolutely need to check out Wand's live album, Spiders in the Rain.

Oh hey, two of mine!

Lewsberg - Droll, dry Dutch stuff in the Velvets tradition; this album there's a slight Young Marble Giants thread running through. Hit the sweet spots for me that the Yo La Tengo did for others.
ie crazy - Psychedelic industrial folk dealing with gender-based violence in NZ - gorgeous flute/cello in the Tartakovsky-esque "Wetlands" & "Weird Weather" to the drab majesty of "As It Stands" and "Have you seen (REDACTED)?". Uneasy listening.

Voted for Tiny Ruins in the tracks ballot - for NZ folk-rock in the Aldous Harding/Marlon Williams/Nadia Reid constellation, they have a lightness of touch via their drummer being a Yukihiro Takahashi disciple. Took me all year to click that "Dorothy Bay"'s riff was reminding me of Guy Blackman's "Gayle"

Two of mine as well :)

FRAADS is amazing Danish hiphop, I think it sounds like Playboi Carti mixed with Max Tundra? There's also a guitar sample in there that sounds like ML Buch at one point. GNOM is omnitronica with an assist from Fire-Toolz.

I thought everyone loved Marnie Stern!

“School of Elea” was my #2

I had no idea Marnie Stern or The Lilac Time released albums this year

I admittedly haven't listened to the Marnie album yet, but I absolutely loved this interview with her https://thetrapset.libsyn.com/305-marnie-stern

I don't know anything about the record at all, but is it perhaps a pun on Western Cwm, which is one of the famous glaciers on Mount Everest?

Cwm is pronounced coom btw

I plugged the ERR REC library LP in the Voting/Campaigning thread. I mis-sold it though as a 70s/80s throwback. Listening again, it runs the gamut of electronic music from every decade since then too. Some of it is even sorta club friendly. Might suit those who like to hang out in the “doing it wrong” thread.

xp maybe but there's like a giant sperm on the cover... a couple reviews I've looked at had no explanation other than to suggest humor and "cock rock" satire or something.

I really wanted to listen to the Marnie Stern album before voting but just didn't find the time.

Am voting for my third place (Bethan Lloyd).

Madhuvanti Pal was my #1, check it out if you like indian classical music

I'd imagine if you know who Cory Hanson is, you know his band Wand

I was the #1 voter here, and I actually had never heard of Hanson or his other band before, so thanks for the tip!

Well glad I noted that! Wand is really great, enjoy!

Also going with Cory Hanson. "Housefly" rips.

Gigi Masin, Rod Modell - Red Hair Girl At Lighthouse Beach was my pick. Gorgeous ambient and a personal dream collab

i tried with the cory hanson record but it just sounds like garbage imo

Parayellogram was mine. Annoying title aside, it's like sinking into a pile of leaves.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Friday, 2 February 2024 20:35 (one year ago) link

Yay for Cory Hanson. Its a very satisfying album. Either that or Ryan Bourne's "Plant City" still vying for my personal first place for last year.
