This was going to be the debut but found it at the last second and had to abandon that thought. Still, this was such a big deal to me at one time.

Keep digging into ILM's history to find unpolled gems, 2024 and another year. Not sure I will unearth as good as a collection that I found last year. Off the Wall, the Idiot and even the shoegaze month was a lot of fun. We have a lot still to be polled as LZ2 and Bummed were unearthed just this month.

Looking at the tracklist I don't remember the non-hits but have always been a New Moon on Monday person

The only album tracks worth a damn are maaaaybe "The Seventh Stranger (a tedious attempt at a "Save a Prayer" lighter waver) and "Shadows on Your Side."

i only know the singles so i voted the re-flex fle fle fle fle flex

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Thursday, 22 February 2024 15:53 (one year ago) link

this album was the shit when I was a pre-teen, it had everything... post-apocalyptic video, cold war video, treasure map album art. I just loved it. still do.

the absence of bikes (f. hazel), Thursday, 22 February 2024 16:18 (one year ago) link

I think this album has a bit of a bad reputation for following Rio and not being on -that- level. But I've always enjoyed it a lot and I have a hard time choosing my favourite. Might throw in a vote for 'Of Crime And Passion' but I'm not sure yet.

The original mix of The Reflex contained herein is way better than the single mix.

piscesx, Thursday, 22 February 2024 22:49 (one year ago) link

Shake up the picture, the lizard mixture, with your dance on the eventide

That's a pretty cuckoo opening line, but one that has somehow stuck with me for 40 years.

I've often cited "My head is full of chopstick/I don't like it."

Tough call between New Moon On Monday which is possibly their most underrated 80s single and Shadows On Your Side which should have been a single. This is definitely a step down from the first two albums, but at the same time I like every song here.

Despite listening to this obsessively as a child, I have little recollection of the deep cuts, probably need to give it a re-listen, but I'm going with New Moon on Monday either way.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 23 February 2024 06:11 (eleven months ago) link

I was right there with you Moodles. Listening back this so reminds me of Be Here Now .

Bee OK, Friday, 23 February 2024 18:39 (eleven months ago) link

I now want to watch the videos, which I probably haven't seen since the 80s.

Bee OK, Friday, 23 February 2024 18:40 (eleven months ago) link

We taped this (the mini-movie version of the New Moon on Monday video) off MTV as kids and were incredibly into it:

the absence of bikes (f. hazel), Friday, 23 February 2024 20:06 (eleven months ago) link

Lol

I know I have never seen that 20 minute movie before.

Bee OK, Friday, 23 February 2024 23:04 (eleven months ago) link

I still want a pair of red leather gloves because of John!

Their hysteria/hysterical record (lots of parallels w 'The Great Escape').

Big step down from Rio, and one of the first disappointments of "my life as a music consumer" (the other was 'Tonight' by Bowie... 7&tRT >>>> Tonight). Found it so confusing that every record made by artists I like wasn't going to be just as good as all their others. 12/13 yr old mind was blown.

There is a lot to recommend it though. Some pretty amazing work by NR certainly. Great pre-choruses (Of Crime and Passion one is magic), which they've always been good at (they're often better than the choruses in later work!).

Absolutely not as good as the first two, but I reach for it more often these days.

This was the first one I heard, as a wee bairn, because I liked "The Reflex". Though I'm inclined to choose just about anything other than that at this point. I prefer several of the non-singles here to Rio's deepest cuts and feel like the decrement in quality is sometimes overstated.

^ OTM re "Of Crime and Passion". A definite contender for me, even.

While actually voting for the instrumental track seems kinda wrong, this is where I note that the bit where the sax arrives in "Tiger Tiger" still nearly made me weep just now lol.

"The Reflex" is much dirtier then I remember and giving it some love.

Looking forward to these results as it sounds like this album meant a lot to a few on this board.

Bee OK, Monday, 26 February 2024 18:21 (eleven months ago) link

Like Alfred I have a bit of love still for "The Seventh Stranger" and "Shadows." I still remember being very annoyed "New Moon on Monday" didn't make Decade for some reason!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 February 2024 18:45 (eleven months ago) link

"New Moon on Monday" commands a lot of loyalty.

The trajectory of this album in the States is interesting. Released in time for the holiday season 1983, it duly peaked in the lower reaches of the top ten, but there was disappointment at the time that first single "Union of the Snake" only peaked at #3 in the UK and U.S. "New Moon on Monday" peaked at #10 before quickly falling. It wasn't until the "The Reflex" remix that the album took off again, re-entering the top ten and giving them their first stateside #1.

My God, that long "Blue Moon" video is so gloriously naff.

Strong result for "Tiger Tiger"! I'm pretty sure I ticked the "Shadows" box in the end.

All ‘long form’ pop videos were crap weren’t they? The Bowie Jazzin’ For Blue Jean one, MJ’s Bad, It was a non-starter! Luckily the idea died a death pretty quickly.
