alpine static, Friday, 8 November 2024 17:10 (three months ago) link

wait, what's the difference between record of the year and song of the year? Is there also a track of the year?

silverfish, Friday, 8 November 2024 17:57 (three months ago) link

Although "record" often refers to any recording of music, Record of the Year differs from Song of the Year or Album of the Year:

Record of the Year is awarded for a single or for one track from an album. This award goes to the performing artist, the producer, recording engineer and/or mixer for that song. In this sense, "record" means a particular recorded song, not i

ts composition or an album of songs.

Song of the Year is also awarded for a single or individual track, but the recipient of this award is the songwriter who actually wrote the lyrics and/or melodies to the song. "Song" in this context means the song as composed, not its recording.

In both cases, the accent marks signal pronunciation rather than emphasis.

André is a common French name, which uses an acute accent to denote that the letter is pronounced as "ay" instead of dropped or swallowed (as in "cadre"). Because the name is so common, nobody would actually be confused if the accent mark weren't there, but it is often retained nonetheless.

Similarly, the name Beyoncé uses an accent mark to indicate that it does not rhyme with "sconce."

there's loads of under 35s on RYM. Fare more than over 35s. Swifties favour metacritic apparently (they take that score very seriously)

Stereogum - Best New Artists
https://www.stereogum.com/2286447/best-new-artists-2024/lists/best-new-artists/

Best New Bands” of the preceding 12 months, Stereogum has evolved. Today, it is my unique honor to present the first edition of our Best New Artists list. It is exactly the same thing as the Best New Bands lists you know and love, just with a more accurate title.

For this project, the Stereogum staff evaluated our listening histories and the news and features we published since last fall to determine who we think are the best bands, singers, producers, rappers, and musicians to have emerged this year. As always, “new” is subjective; we prioritized artists who put out their debut full-length album this year, but that’s not a hard cutoff for eligibility. Maybe the artist has been around for a while but just signed to a label this year. Maybe they have a hefty Bandcamp catalog but their most recent project was a significant level up. Either way, we’re acknowledging artists who’ve made considerable strides and earned bigger spots on our radar over the past 12 months — sometimes it really all just comes down to vibes.

If you’re an avid Stereogum reader — first of all, thank you — a lot of these names should already ring a bell. We might’ve named them a Band To Watch. They might’ve earned themselves an Album Of The Week accolade. Stereogum might’ve even presented one of their concerts this year. The Best New Bands Artists list is not a year-end list. But our 2024 In Review package is just around the corner, so you’ll probably be seeing some of these names again soon enough.

And now we present you with Stereogum’s 40 Best New Artists Of 2024, listed in alphabetical order. Below that you’ll find playlists on Spotify and Apple Music highlighting the honorees. —Abby Jones

albumoftheyear has it's 2024 banner green because I suspect they expect BRAT to win AOTY but it's funny how none of the list counted so far have helped pushed it anywhere near the top 50.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 November 2024 03:26 (three months ago) link

From what I can gather it's going to be a fight to the top between The Cure and Charli XCX.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 November 2024 03:34 (three months ago) link

Charli XCX and Chapel Roan releasing the most beloved pop albums in such a stacked year for pop releases was not in my bingo card.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 November 2024 03:45 (three months ago) link

Wasn’t the Roan album from last year?

Grape Fired At Czar From Crack Battery (President Keyes), Thursday, 14 November 2024 04:15 (three months ago) link

yeah but "year of impact"

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 November 2024 04:39 (three months ago) link

A few ILM pop elite were definitely in on it last year and it made it to #56 on the top 77 albums list which disqualifies it from appearing this year but it would have very likely made it way higher if nommed this year. I still expect some songs to make it to the tracks poll this year.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 November 2024 04:45 (three months ago) link

But you're right, allow me to rephrase:

Charli XCX and Chapel Roan becoming the most beloved pop acts in such a stacked year for pop releases was not in my bingo card.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 November 2024 04:51 (three months ago) link

The monster this year is Short n' Sweet, especially with ILM.

One thing I've seemed to run across even more than usual this list season is just how many times I've clicked on something that piqued my interest and saw it was completely sold out in all physical versions. I get that things are weird out there for physical media in general and I don't blame the bands or artists for it, but such a bummer when runs are so small that the supplies are exhausted before the year even ends.

Sure, I can and frequently do, pony up for a digital version, but I was just struck by how many things I would normally be willing to pay for physical versions but it isn't even possible.

Jon, this has been a big frustration of mine for a couple years. You kinda have to be on things IMMEDIATELY or you’re out of luck for six or nine months, when a repress happens (unless you miss that)

All those Bandcamp email notifications can be annoying but sometimes they help you get in on stuff early

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 6 January 2025 21:13 (one month ago) link

Oh, for sure, Bandcamp emails have helped out quite a bit! Though when you're trawling year-end lists for new to you stuff, you don't even have that benefit.

Must be frustrating as an artist to see your record pop up on some year-end lists but knowing you've got nothing ready to sell.

The 19th Annual Francis Davis Jazz Poll

Complete missed the Patricia Brennan album, and I saw her at the Jazz Gallery in September playing in a group led by Dave Douglas for the Festival of New Trumpet Music.

x-post - Yea, Pazz & Jop Ripoff poll is on Facebook. I whined last year to the guy running the Pazz & Jop Ripoff poll that the results were well so, white, and he responded that I was welcome to find other contributors who were interested in music by artists of color in genres the poll results didn't credit much. But alas, that's hard to do - there are folks out there obviously writing about (and knowledgeable fans too re) rap, afropop, north African guitar music, jazz, amapiano, southern soul, Asian, Caribbean, Latin, zydeco etc. but finding contact addresses for em all and trying to convince them to submit to a poll that just runs on Facebook wouldn't be easy.

xxpost Pazz and Jop Rip-Off also accepted ballots via gmail, as mentioned above, but dunno how many people know about that. Yep, overall results are white on rice (except Hurray For The Riff Raff's Latina leader, and maybe at least some of her and other solo Top Tenners' recording cohorts).-Can't remember if individual ballots have been available in previous years, and haven't tried the spreadsheet, but here's Chuck Eddy's very cosmopolitan ballot:

Expert Witness is in, and Brad seems happy:

While the results aren’t statistically representative of the opinions of anybody other than the people who voted in it, once you scroll down a bit they do give a sense of the breadth of good music in the world: South African gqom or is it 3-step; K-pop from the margins and right down the middle; all manner of sacred and profane Brazilian music; Nordijazz weird and weirder; and Slut SZN. The one clear weakness relative to American consumption is the lack of Spanish-language music (Hinds notwithstanding); I’ll think about what gerrymandering I can do to remedy this (let a year of Bzrp Sessions count as an EP maybe.)

Maybe the most surprising fact about this year’s top ten albums was not that they were by acts led by women or non-binary artists, it’s that I didn’t notice this until voter Boris Palameta pointed it out to me...Okay, one more reason this poll is good. The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess being near or at the top of a bumper crop of albums by pop women (depending on how you split credit between Charli and her marketing team) was one of the stories of the music year. (Others: folkies are back and some of them are good; you can often make out the lyrics of songs again, and some people are even listening to them...
