I was listening to Dennis Bovell when I read the question. So was thinking reggae was a 5otally different type of dread innit.

Still some of it can lift the load.

Psychedelic hard rock and krautrock.
Just reading Neu Klang and seeing the new German music of the early 70s as trying to draw a line starting again after fascism. So possibly oddly fitting.

Stevo, Thursday, 6 February 2025 08:59 (two weeks ago) link

A lot of 80s US hard-core was directed at the then level of fascism of Reagan etc which may be mild compared to now.
But may be too much of a reminder.

Maybe some lengthy excursions into prog fantasy would help one escape the mundane for a while.

& maybe you could substitute some long coat gloom and listen to post-punk stuff like Joy Division, Magazine, The Cure and Echo and the Bunnymen. Bung in a bit of Siouxsie too.

Been listening to a lot of Bad Religion lately.

But in terms of distracting from the Dread, how about Dread Zeppelin?

Lots of postpunk and adjacent (i.e. New Romantic/ early new Wave stuff) is getting me thru the hellscape.
Also Andy Stott's "Too Many Voices" and ECM stuff.

Oddly can barely listen to disco/house/techno these days - reminds me too much of better times and just seems vacuous atm. Very sad.

eyyy much thanks for all these juicy recs! excited 2 bury my head in good noise for a while

bit thoughtless of me to not consider the hairstyle connotation when titling the thread -- i'm sorry about that! i was referring primarily to The Horrors, and the overwhelming negative emotions they induce, not dreadlocks on people! except white people, kinda. oh, there's this dreadlocked white guy with an rfk sticker on his jeep down the street from me who i would very much like to forget.

anyway here's a music: i like the sound of this incel being hauled to the guillotine, and the *doonk-dink* of his head bouncing away at the end 😘👌

Lots of Madonna and Cyndi the past few days. And then yesterday I was rereading the bits of their bio (M) or autibio (CL) covering the late 80s and how both of them were so much a part of the LGBTQ community of the time and I just started crying a bunch because of the feeling that it's all burning down now. Which I guess is not exactly a distraction! But it's a better feeling than what I was feeling before this Madonna+Cyndi binge.

New Order as well, genuine consolation

And for some reason imperial era Uriah Heep which I never listened to in depth before and it RULES

The way the compositions of Aly Eissa flow between ominous to witty to joyful has been the balm/bomb of my last few months of listening. Here a performance of the title track from his Gouda Bar album
