Why is someone puttering about the Melvins here? Aren't they supposed to be irrelevant? All in all, Houdini isn't quite prime Melvins like Ozma, 10 Songs, or Gluey Porch Treatments, but it's FUCKING CLASSIC nonetheless. "Hooch" is one of the best songs of the 90's, everyone should Napster it right now and play it fucking really fucking loud. Show me your metal/mettle, indeed. I swear no one's ever hit things better than Dale Crover, and one thing that major label production did was make you really notice him on Houdini and the oft-maligned but eminently listenable Stoner Witch. I even go for the recent trilogy; Crybaby made my albums of the year list.

Dud.

Not dud, 'dude,' you mean to say. ;-) Otis speaks Wisdom, and heed his words. The most recent albums have all had their joys as well, and I regret not being able to catch the Melvins/Fantomas joint performance for New Year's.

I've run into them a couple of times in my radio persona lifestyle. One of the odder memories I have is Lori Black, Shirley Temple's daughter, strung out on a heroin nod and looking completely dead while sitting in the sun on the steps not forty yards from where I type this right now, while Buzz chatted on the air about the Air Freshener Company That Could Not Be Named.

Who in god's acre would know? Has anybody been foolhardy enough to approach such a mediocre offering? I would hope this would be living a comfortable life in 99 cent bins and not actually occupying playing time in anybody's life. I'm puzzled at the assumption that this could be relevant to any human being...

Classic. I mean in every sense. The Melvins are an easy band to, at first glance, brush off as cartoon metal crap. But give em' a few listens and you're hooked. Heavy, heavy, heavy and thick and most importantly smart and often with a sense of humor.

Houdini and Stoner Witch are the two best albums in the Melvins canon. Their earlier work (except for Lysol) suffered from low quality production and lack of focus from the band. Their later stuff is just plain uninteresting. Save your money from CD's and see them live.

As the Melvins continue to release more pranks, it should only stand to move albums like Houdini to better, higher ground. Let's face it, if you are a Melvins fan, this album belongs in your collection. It would have to be in the top 7 Melvins releases. It reminds me of Nirvana at times, but it is probably because Kurt had a hand in it. "Hooch" is a great track along with the Kiss cover of "Going Blind" which I find to be quite amusing. "Night Goat" with it's dark, medium-paced, familiar trodding remains one of my favorites with its awesome vocal scream. Reminds me a lot of someone else.

GRATE record. Haven't listened to it in a while but I certainly should do so soon. The version of "Rocket Reducer No. 62" on the vinyl version is my favorite MC5 cover by far.

I'll admit I haven't bought anything of theirs in several years. How's Electroretard? I saw the Wipers and Pink Floyd covers and was tempted to pick it up. Any good?

anyone seen one of the more recent melvins shows where they perform this album in its entirety? thoughts?

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 12:34 (sixteen years ago) link

I think this album has aged well. At the time, it was a big disappointment to me, following masterworks such as Ozma, Bullhead, Eggnog, and Lysol.

It was the first time they'd made an album that was inferior to its predecessor.

But I attribute that mostly to the fact that it was recorded in several different studios, with multiple producers. A bit schizophrenic...

Still, it does rock! And the lyrics sheet is one of their more inspired contributions to rock mythology.

This was appx 1 or 2 shows in the UK. You can buy a CD of what it sounds like here:

Even though it's the easy pick, it's still probably the best Melvins album

they're actually doing the whole houdini thing in its entirety next week in sydney. though thanks for the lead - i'll be sure to check that release out!

No, it's specifically one show next Thursday in our city/country/hemisphere. Anyone want to vote on whether one should make this, in a pub with bad sound and a sticky carpet, their first Melvins show, or go instead to see The Cinematic Orchestra in the best-sounding room in the city, purpose-built for chamber orchestras?

Love this record still, thou I've played it to death and can no longer want. Disagree w Nates that it was, even in its moment, a step down in any sense. Yeah, sure, less a poem lovely as a anvil than the Ozma/Bullhead/Lysols, but a great thing in its own right. The trilogy of Atlantic albums it kicked off (Houdidni/Stoner Witch/Stag) can easily go toe-to-to with the 3 that preceeded it. Different beasts for different seasons.

Houdini was always my fave. Possibly as it wa the 1st one that came out after I got into them and I got it the day it came out. It felt like my album more than the older ones I had got.
